For most of his life Ohm held only indifferent, poorly paid teaching jobs, but in 1852 he was given the chair of physics at the University of Munich. J. Z. Fullmer Source: The New Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia Although Georg Simon Ohm discovered one of the most fundamental laws of current electricity, he was virtually ignored for most of his life by scientists in his own country - Germany. Born in Erlangen, Bavaria, Ohm's ambition was to become a scientist and to work at one of the great German Universities. Ohms' father was a mechanical engineer and taught him basic practical skills that later proved useful. Ohm became professor of mathematics at the Jesuit College of Cologne in 1817. Between 1825 and 1827, he produced a mathematical description of conduction in circuits modelled on Fourier's study of heat conduction. Ohm's main interest however was current electricity, recently advanced by Alessandro Volta's invention of the battery. For his experiments, he made his own metal wire, producing a range of thicknesses and lengths of remarkably consistent quality.

First the history and development of the resistor as we now now it. Georg Simon Ohm was born on March 16, 1789 in the city of Erlangen in Bavaria, which is now Germany. He died on July 6, 1854 in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. Ohm came from a protestant family. His father, Johann Wolfgang Ohm, was a locksmith while his mother, Maria Elizabeth Beck, was the daughter of a tailor. Although his parents had not been formally educated, Ohm's father was a rather remarkable man who had educated himself to a high level and was able to give his sons and excellent education through his own teachings. Had Ohm's brothers and sisters all survived he would have been one of a large family but, as was common in those times, several of the children died in their childhood. Of the seven children born to Johann and Maria Ohm only three survived, Georg, his brother Marin who went on to become a well-known mathematician, and his sister Elizabeth Barbara.
While children, Georg and Martin were taught by their father who brought them to a high standard in mathematics, physics, chemistry and philosophy. This was in stark contrast to their school education. Georg Simon entered Erlangen Gymnasium at the age of eleven but there he received little by the way of scientific training. In fact, his formal part of his schooling was uninspired stressing learning by rote and interpreting texts. This contrasted strongly with the inspired instruction that both Georg Simon and Martin received from their farther who brought them to a level in mathematics which led the professor at the University of Erlangen, Karl Christian von Langsdorf, to compare them to the Bernoulli Family. It is worth stressing again the remarkable achievement of Johann Wolfgang Ohm, an entirely self-taught man, to have been able to give his sons such a fine mathematical and scientific education.

Euro MBA: Georg-Simon-Ohm Management-Institut erneut akkreditiert Das Georg-Simon-Ohm Management-Institut in Nürnberg bietet zusammen mit der Bristol Business School und dem Institut Commercial de Nancy den trinationalen Studiengang Euro-MBA an. Die europäische Organisation AMBA (Association of Masters of Business Administration, London) akkreditierte zum Sommersemester 2005 diesen Studiengang für weitere fünf Jahre ohne jegliche Auflagen. Hochschulen müssen mit einer solchen Akkreditierung ihrer Studiengänge in regelmäßigen Abständen die Qualität ihres Lehrangebots zertifizieren lassen. Das Management-Institut der Georg-Simon-Ohm Fachhochschule arbeitet seit 1997 zusammen mit der Business School der University of West England (Bristol) und dem Institut Commercial de Nancy Frankreich. Studierende aus der ganzen Welt absolvieren die Lehrprogramme abwechselnd in Deutschland, Frankreich und England. Angefangen wird im September in Bristol, wo zunächst grundlegende wissenschaftliche Management-Seminare stattfinden. Georg Simon Ohm nasceu na Bavária, Alemanha. Trabalhava como professor secundário de Matemática no Colégio dos Jesuítas, em Colônia, mas desejava lecionar na universidade. Para tanto, foi-lhe exigido, como prova de admissão, que realizasse um trabalho de pesquisa inédito. Optou por fazer experiências com a eletricidade, e para isso construiu seu próprio equipamento, incluindo os fios. (Equipamento utilizado por Ohm) Experimentando diferentes espessuras e comprimentos de fios, acabou descobrindo relações matemáticas extremamente simples envolvendo essas dimensões e as grandezas elétricas. Inicialmente, verificou que a intensidade da corrente era diretamente proporcional à área da seção do fio e inversamente proporcional a seu comprimento. Com isso, Ohm pôde definir um novo conceito: o de resistência elétrica. O que significa resistência elétrica? Os elétrons livre que fluem ao longo do fio ou cabo elétrico tem de passar por entre os átomos que o compõe, chocando-se constantemente com eles. Desse modo, o fluxo de elétrons é brecado pela resistência que os átomos opõem à sua passagem. Em 1827, Ohm conseguiu formular um enunciado que envolvia, além dessas grandezas, a diferença de potencial: "A intensidade da corrente elétrica que percorre um condutor é diretamente proporcional à diferença de potencial e inversamente proporcional à resistência do circuito". - the man behind Ohm's Law Ohm is a name synonymous with the very basis of electricity. Every school child that studies physics will have heard of Ohm's Law. Yet behind the name for the unit of resistance is a very real man. Someone who performed experiments that were at the forefront of the technology of the time. Early Life
Georg Simon Ohm was born on 18th March 1789 in Erlangen in Bavaria. He was the eldest of three children born to Wofgang and Maria. Georg entered school at the age of 11 and he proved to be a bright student, and in 1805 he moved on to University at Erlangen. Unfortunately the social life proved to be too much of an attraction and after just over a year he was forced to leave. Having learned some of the hard truths of life Ohm set to work again and this time managed to gain his Ph.D. With this behind him he took up a career as a teacher with the aim of becoming a professor. To gain recognition he published a book on geometry, and this enabled him to move on to teach at the Jesuit's College in Cologne. Law Derived
In 1820 the phenomenon of electromagnetism had only just been discovered. Ohm was fascinated by electricity and started to make some investigations. However even basic measurements like measuring current were difficult. Measuring current was accomplished by measuring the magnetic flux around the conductor. Whilst doing this Ohm noticed that the type of conductor had an effect on the flux and as a result he performed experiments to find out if there might be any relationship between the voltage, current and the material of the wire.
