He was also adept at a number of different accents, and no two of his characters ever looked or sounded the same. Bill and God's Excellent Adventure
By Jon Meacham October 17, 2004 Sunday MILES GONE BY A Literary Autobiography.
By William F. Buckley Jr.
Illustrated. 594 pp.
Regnery Publishing. $29.95. Long caricatured as the consummate upper-class conservative - his "Masterpiece Theater" air, his unabashed intellectual self-confidence and his supply of words from the Oxford English Dictionary have made caricature all too easy - Buckley is a more complicated figure than his prevailing image suggests.
Reading "Miles Gone By," his latest collection of autobiographical pieces, a book of charm and grace and wit, one finds it virtually impossible to envision Buckley as his liberal critics have for so long: as a dark Goldwaterite who hides his extremism beneath a sophisticated Manhattan veneer. He is a partisan combatant, a key figure in the right wing's journey from the fringes of American politics to the mainstream - from, roughly, Joe McCarthy's sweaty brow to Ronald Reagan's sunny smile. But agree or disagree with the conservative creed he helped shape and promulgate, Buckley is the happiest of warriors, an exuberant man of the right, a Roman Catholic who has apparently taken the reassurances of Scripture to heart. "In the world ye shall have tribulation," Jesus says in the Gospel of St. John, "but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."

document.write(String.fromCharCode(60 + 4)) ntu.ac.uk> A number of years ago, Christoph Classen published an excellent book on images of National Socialism on West German television between 1955 and 1965. He has followed this with an equally thorough, perceptive and meticulously researched monograph on representations of antifascism and fascism on the radio in the Soviet-occupied zone (SBZ) and the early years of the GDR (up to 1953). His new book is not without occasional weaknesses. It is characterised by a degree of repetitiousness in places. Sometimes the admittedly always fascinating detail, particularly where administrative changes within eastern German and GDR radio are being described, tends to obscure the main lines of argument. The strongest aspect of Classen’s book is its commitment to differentiation. Thus he shows that, even in the 1945–1948 period when a more plural memory discourse was possible on east German radio and when there was an emphasis on various forms of victimhood, Jewish suffering tended to be marginalised (p. 130), as was the theme of Nazi racial theory, and there was little reference to eastern European annihilation camps (p. 132) – a lop-sidedness, incidentally, also characteristic of the Nuremberg trials, where, as Donald Bloxham has shown, camps such as Dachau were given much more prominence than Auschwitz, while Sobibór, Treblinka and Chelmno were hardly mentioned.

    Katherine Kressman Taylor
In 1938, Kathrine Kressman Taylor wrote Address Unknown , which brought worldwide attention to the Nazi threat long before the start of WWII. She was known as "the woman who jolted America." The novel tells the story of two German business partners living in the United States, one of whom returns to Germany, while the other, who is Jewish, remains behind. Through their correspondence we watch the one gradually fall under the Nazi's spell, with frightening consequences for both of them. Re-published in 1995, the story remains chilling today. From 1947-66, Taylor was a professor of English at Gettysburg College, where she was the first woman to earn tenure.

    The Wanderer
Fortune-Seeker William Niven Grew Rich In Tales Of Adventure. By Randall Holdridge Buried Cities, Forgotten Gods: William Niven's Life of Discovery and Revolution in Mexico and the American Southwest, by Robert S. Wicks and Roland H. Harrison (Texas Tech University Press). Cloth, $39.95. WILLIAM NIVEN'S LONG life as a prospector, mineralogist, businessman, adventurer, explorer, amateur archaeologist and raconteur was both curious and admirable, and it is admirably told by his grandson, Roland H. Harrison, and art historian Robert S. Wicks. The volume includes many of Niven's fascinating photographs of early 20th-century Mexico. At age 28, William Niven emigrated to the U.S. to seek his fortune, a goal which, despite his hard work and imaginative speculations, eluded him. A reader might conclude that the "canny Scotsman" was not as canny as the less scrupulous politicians, businessmen and academics whose trails crossed his. Yet, Niven intrepidly survived desert thirst, earthquake, bandit skirmishes, skull-packed caves, arrest in revolutionary Mexico, raging rivers and jungle fever. The God-fearing Scotsman managed to keep safe in a world of violence and intrigue by nothing more (nor less) than an ironclad sense of honor and sober industry. Following his arrival in Providence in 1879, Niven's earliest American failures came as a traveling salesman. In a succession of jobs, he worked his way west to Denver, where he fell victim to mining fever. For two years he toughed it out as a prospector in New Mexico until he landed an indoor job at an 1893 mining exhibition in Santa Fe setting up a display of his collected regional oddities. Soon he was back in the field, and he invested part of the profit from the sale of a good claim he had found east of Tucson to buy one-half interest in the Benson House hotel. With the balance he purchased a nine-ton carload of ore samples from mines in Tombstone and Bisbee along with specimens of cacti, pickled gila monsters and petrified wood which he took for display in the 1884-85 World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial in New Orleans.
