Niven's business in Maybole flourished. He acquired more property, and continue to play a leading part in Town Council affairs. Sir James Fergusson (in The White Hind and Other Discoveries) quotes a contemporary reference to Niven's civic activities: 'The town of Maybole has also of late been much improved. Access to it was formerly inconvenient and difficult, but by the exertions of Mr Niven of Kirkbride who

Niven. The Reverend Alexander (1760-1833)
Son of Bailie Robert Niven (d. 1807) who lived in Girvan. He was a day pupil at Hugh Rodger's school in Kirkoswald when Burns was there. While he was tutoring the family of Mr Hamilton of Sundrum in the parish of Coylton, he visited Burns at Mossgiel. He was ordained Minister of Dunkeld in 1793, and St Andrews' University gave him the degree of D.D. in 1816. He married Susanna Stewart in 1794 and had seven children. Writing to William Niven from Lochlea on 12th June 1781, Burns said: 'Our communion was on Sunday se'en night, I mention this to tell you that I saw your cousin there, with some of Mr Hamilton's sons. You cannot imagine how pleased I was to steal a look at him, and trace the resemblance of my old friend. I was prepossessed in his favor on that account, but still more by that ingenuous modesty (a quality so rare among students, especially in the divinity way) which is so apparent in his air and manner.' William's cousin was, of course, Alexander Niven.

At Cambridge Niven studied mathematics at Trinity College, where he graduated as third Wrangler in 1866. The following year he was elected to a fellowship at Trinity College. Niven left Cambridge to take up an appointment as professor at Woolwich. There he worked on gunnery and ballistics. However the attraction of Cambridge was great and he returned there becaming a firm friend of Maxwell After Maxwell 's death, Niven helped to edit the second edition of

Niven, deceased 15th Feb., 1841, aged 68. Their mortal remains are laid here." [The Ayr Advertiser of 19th Dec., 1844, says Mr Niven died on 13th Dec., in his 83d year.] The chief public interest attaching to Mr Niven now is that he was a schoolfellow of Burns at Kirkoswald. After leaving school, Niven was taken home to assist his father in business, but his early friendship with Burns was not forgotten, and when the first edition of our Bard’s poems was published, Niven disposed of seven copies for him, price £1 is. Burns was grateful, and came to Maybole to receive the money. He lodged in the King’s Arms, and it is traditionally reported that his hire of a horse to take him home was the first hire he ever indulged in. A short time after, he sent the following letter to Mr Niven (original in possession of Mr Rennie, Union Bank) :— "To Mr William Niven, Merchant, Maybole, care of Thomas Piper, Surgeon, to be left at Dr Charles’s shop, Ayr.—Mossgiel, 30th Aug., 1786. My dear Friend, I have been very throng ever since I saw you, and have not got the whole of my promise performed to you; but you know the old proverb, ‘The break o’ a day ‘s no the break o’ a bargain.’ ‘Have patience with me and I will pay you all.’

Katherine Anne Porter in Recent Biography of William Niven
By Beth Alvarez, University of Maryland
An interesting chapter of my Katherine Anne Porter life began on September 22, 1994. On that date, Roland H. Harrison, a grandson of William Niven, telephoned me in my office at McKeldin Library. William Niven served as the model for Givens in Katherine Anne Porter's "Maria Concepcion" as well as the central figure in her sketch "The Charmed Life." Dr. Harrison, a retired research chemist, was at the beginning of the work that resulted in the publication of Buried Cities, Forgotten Gods , a biography of his grandfather published by Texas Tech University Press in 1999. For various reasons, our communication came to a virtual stop until fairly recently. In November 1999, Dr. Harrison called me to discuss the successful publication of Buried Cities, Forgotten Gods

Buried Cities, Forgotten Gods
Robert S. Wicks and Roland H. Harrison "I will go no further," William Niven’s Indian guide declared. "Beyond on every ridge, as far as you can see is all a part of one great City of the Dead . . . the gods will permit no man to go further and from here I return." His later discovery of twenty-six hundred inscribed stone tablets in the Valley of Mexico aroused considerable controversy, and inspired James Churchward to put forth an occult interpretation of the origins of the Native Americans in The Lost Continent of Mu (1926). They remain controversial to this day. The writer Katherine Anne Porter frequented Niven’s excavations in the Valley of Mexico and based her first published short story, "María Concepción," on her experiences there. She would write that the "Old Man never carried a gun, never locked up his money, sat on political dynamite and human volcanoes and never bothered to answer his slanderers. He bore a charmed life. Nothing would ever happen to him." Niven was planning a book about his experiences, but was unable to complete it because of ill health. Buried Cities, Forgotten Gods is based upon his surviving manuscripts and personal papers.
