The illustrations used are believed to be in the public domain.      Aaaahhh!!!...a shiver goes up your back as the patient lets out another deafening, bloodcurdling scream of pain as he tugs and pulls violently on the straps holding him down. "Something really must be done so these poor people don’t suffer so," you think to yourself. You nearly faint as you watch the painful operation. Yet, you manage by telling yourself over and over again that the operation is necessary to save the patient’s life. Aaaahhh!!!...the screams continue.......      You are 31 year old Florence Nightingale, and you have just witnessed your first operation. The year is 1851, a time when operation methods are indeed crude. Anesthetics to reduce pain or to put patients to sleep are just beginning to come into the world of medicine. There are no antiseptics to prevent infection. The instruments used on one patient are rarely cleaned before being used on the next. After the operation you contemplate all that has happened during the long hard path it took for you to get where you are today.... Twelve Years Earlier      As a girl at the age of 18 growing up in a wealthy family living in the upper class area of London, Florence Nightingale was distinctly different from the other girls her age. Although Florence was in the social spotlight and a member of a wealthy family, she had a desire for something quite different than the other people of her society. All her life Florence Nightingale clashed head first with the ‘rules of society’.

Autograph Letter Signed, written from the Barracks Hospital, Scutari [Crimea], dated 10 December 1854, to an unnamed correspondent requesting 'an apparatus for the administration of chloroform,' and 'half a dozen of what in the French Hospital answer to our MacIntyre's or Liston's splints for compound fractures ... the sooner they can be had the more acceptable,' Scutari, 1854. 2 1/2 pp., 8vo, the second half of the third page with a postscript by Charles Bracebridge; traces of mount on verso of second leaf. A SUPERB LETTER, WRITTEN FIVE WEEKS AFTER MISS NIGHTINGALE'S ARRIVAL IN THE CRIMEA. The appalling conditions which Nightingale found in the Barracks Hospital are well known, and so too is the single-mindedness with which she tackled them. This letter is a perfect example of the forthright manner which accounted for the 'Nightingale effect.' By early December Nightingale had become the unofficial purveyor for the hospital, and in this instance she is requesting medical equipment, and anaesthetics at that, rather than such basics as clothing and cutlery which were also pressing needs. Charles Bracebridge managed the finances of the Scutari expedition, and his postscript authorises payment for the requested goods. 'Miss Nightingale attacked every angle of hospital care in the filthy, disease-ridden barrack hospital at Scutari, which had no kitchen, plumbing or central heating. Food, clothing, water supplies, and general nursing care all came within her surveillance. Within a few months she had effected sanitary reforms with rigid insistence on cleanliness and established a kitchen and laundry as well as recreation rooms and other measures to cheer and comfort her patients. The drop in hospital mortality was phenomenal, from 42% in February 1855 to 2% a few months later' (Wangensteen and Wangensteen p. 379).
