Nightingale earned the nickname "The Lady With the Lamp" for her tireless and compassionate nursing of British soldiers during the Crimean War. Nightingale was born to wealthy English parents and proved to be a quick-witted and independent child. In 1837 she felt she heard a call from God, though the calling was unclear. She developed an interest in nursing and, despite opposition from her parents, eventually trained as a nurse and began work in a London clinic. After the outbreak of the Crimean War in 1854, she led a group of three dozen nurses to Constantinople to serve in British military hospitals there. (This was controversial: female nurses had not previously served in such wartime field hospitals.) No shrinking violet, she cajoled army officials to change terrible conditions in the hospitals, earning the gratitude of soldiers and a measure of public fame. When the war ended in 1856 she returned to London and continued her reform campaign there. Her outspoken Notes on Matters Affecting the Health, Efficiency and Hospital Administration of the British Army

Nightingale, Florence
British nursing pioneer
The daughter of wealthy and cultured parents who expected her to marry into fashionable society, Florence Nightingale was determined to be a nurse at a time when nursing was viewed as a disreputable occupation. She went on to make it a cherished and respected profession.
Defying her family and prejudice against rich working women, Florence sailed for the Crimea in 1854, where thousands of soldiers from Britain's war with Russia were dying in hospitals that were in a filthy condition. In less than six months, Florence had become a legend. Her tireless labor reduced death rates from 42 percent to 2.2 percent.
Returning to Britain in 1856, she wrote a treatise advocating sweeping reforms of the army's medical administration - most were implemented. Her outrage that nursing was considered unsuitable for ladies and fit only for low-grade domestics prompted her to open Britain's first training school for nurses at London's St.Thomas's Hospital. A national heroine, Florence was the first woman to be honored with the rarely awarded Order of Merit.

A discussion on Florence Nightingale's nursing model and its positive influence on the nursing profession and hospitals. 1,740 words ( approx. 7.0 pages ), 10 sources, Click here to show/hide Paper Summary
Abstract
From the Paper:

"It was Florence Nightingale who established professional nurses' training and who stands out as the founder of the modern profession. She was also adept politically and could mobilize public opinion - she was possibly the first spin-nurse. Florence Nightingale has for years been recognized as the founder of modern nursing. The strength of Nightingales model is that it focuses on the patient. The quality of care such focus can bring only serves to improve the quality of the patient 's life and does not allow for the nurse to be lost in the management and politics that are found in hospitals today. It allows the nurse to understand where his or her first duty lies and thus makes health care more compassionate." Term Paper #11102

Nurse Florence Nightingale was born of wealthy English parents who were living in Florence at the time. Extremely well-educated at home by her father, she learned Greek, Latin, French, German, and Italian, as well as history, philosophy and math. It's no wonder that such a brilliant person was appalled by the prospect of the boring social life which was the lot of most Victorian women. Florence wanted to be her own woman and have a life, at a time when it was unheard of for gentlewomen to have careers, and when the only "working girl" was a prostitute. Luckily, when she was 17 she heard the voice of God telling her to devote her life to the service of mankind. She had no idea what kind of service God had in mind, and it was years before she figured it out. Faced by family opposition to her independence, Florence fell ill, and was nursed by her aunt. The two became devoted to each other, and Florence described their relationship as "like two lovers". Florence also loved a cousin, Marianne Nicholson. "I have never loved but one person with passion in my life, and that was her", Florence wrote. But Marianne's brother had fallen in love with Florence, and when Florence finally declined his proposal of marriage, the two women had a falling out. She clearly was emotionally devoted to women, never to men, and adamantly refused all offers of marriage. Living in the repressed world of Victorian values, who can say if she ever expressed her love physically? But, as I always say, you don't have to have sex to be gay (but it helps!).
