Edmond John Dillon Biography: Edmond Dillon was the 1994/95 winner of the Lord Lloyd of Kilgerran Prize. He was presented with the award at the 1995 BILETA conference in Glasgow. Introduction Essentially hypertext consists of interlinked pieces of text. These can be short paragraphs, a single computer screen, scrolling file or even an entire file. Each unit of information is termed a node. Each of these nodes then have pointers to other nodes and these connectors between nodes of information are called links. If the user is reading a piece of text in a hypertext system, various concepts, terms and phrases will be highlighted. By using the keyboard or by 'clicking' with a 'mouse' any of the highlighted items can be selected. As the user progresses through the system, he or she has complete freedom to move through the information in any order or direction. A number of alternatives exist at each stage as opposed to a single stream of information.[ ] This freedom of choice over the direction in which the user wishes to move is at the heart of hypertext.
