Neo-Pythagorean Philosophy
The ethico-religious society founded by Pythagoras, which flourished especially during the fourth century, when philosophy reached the zenith of its perfection at Athens. Here and there, however, there appears a philosopher who reverts to the Pythagorean doctrine of numbers, and in a general way manifests the tendency of the school towards religious ethics and the practices of asceticism. Beginning with the middle of the first century B. C., a more systematic attempt was made to restore the speculative philosophy of the Pythagoreans and combine it with the practice of astrology and sorcery. The first of these systematic neo-Pythagoreans was Figulus, a Roman philosopher who lived at Alexandria about the middle of the first century B. C., and was a friend of Cicero. Other Romans also contributed to the movement, the chief of whom were Vatinius and

www.Chrysalis-Foundation.org Dear Reader, Since July 2002, more than 100,000 visitors have logged on to www.Chrysalis-Foundation.org. Your interest has encouraged us to plan a self-publication of Cris Forster's manuscript Musical Mathematics: A Practice in the Mathematics of Tuning Instruments and Analyzing Scales . To accomplish this task, we will be applying to organizations and individuals for grants. Our goal is to go to press in the spring of 2006, and to publish a complete and unabridged first edition of 500 copies, with a retail cost of less than $90.00 per book. If you would like more information on Mr. Forster's 1300-page manuscript, please visit our Musical Mathematics page, which shows the Table of Contents of this work. If you would like to see Musical Mathematics in print, please write to us so that we may include your emails and letters in our grant applications.

Nicomachus
Nicomachus of Gerasa is mentioned in a small number of sources and we can date him fairly accurately. From his writings on numbers and music, it is clear that Nicomachus was a Pythagorean. Porphyry says that he was one of the leading members of the Pythagorean School. Nicomachus wrote Introduction to Arithmetic , which was the first work to treat arithmetic as a separate topic from geometry. Unlike Euclid, Nicomachus gave no abstract proofs of his theorems, merely stating theorems and illustrating them with numerical examples. The work contains elementary errors which indicate that he did not have proofs to give. An example of this, consider the results which Nicomachus quotes on perfect numbers. He states that the n th perfect number has n digits, and that all perfect numbers end in 6 and 8 alternately. These are false, but are reasonable guesses based on the four perfect numbers known during his time, namely 6, 28, 496 and 8128. The work contains the first multiplication table in a Greek text. It is also remarkable in that it contains Arabic numerals, not Greek ones. For over 1000 years Introduction to Arithmetic was the standard arithmetic text, despite the many errors and superstitous numerology. Most Arabic texts on number theory written by mathematicians were influenced by both Euclid and Nicomachus.

history
The charismatic teacher and miracle worker Apollonius lived in the first century AD. He was born in Tyana (Bor in the south of modern Turkey) and may have belonged to a branch of ancient philosophy called neo-Pythagoreanism. He received divine honors in the third century. Although the Athenian sophist (professional orator) Philostratus wrote a lengthy Life of Apollonius , hardly anything about the sage is certain. However, there are several bits and pieces of information that may help us reconstruct something of the life of this man, who was and is frequently compared to the Jewish sage and miracle worker Jesus of Nazareth This is the fourth part of an article in nine pieces. READING LIST
In their How to Read a Book (1940, 1972), Mortimer Adler and Charles Van Doren append "A Recommended Reading List." They write: "On the following pages appears a list of books that it would be worth your while to read. We mean the phrase 'worth your while' quite seriously. Although not all of the books listed are 'great' in any of the commonly accepted meanings of the term, all of them will reward you for the effort you make to read them. All of these books are over most people's heads - sufficiently so, at any rate, to force most readers to stretch their minds to understand and appreciate them. And that, of course, is the kind of book you should seek out if you want to improve your reading skills, and at the same time discover the best that has been thought and said in our literary tradition." In some instances where a general title for an author is cited, e.g. Works, Tragedies, the particular titles recommended by the authors are shown in parentheses.

His early works on arithmetic and music are extant, both based on Greek handbooksby nicomachus of gerasa, a 1stcentury-AD Palestinian mathematician.
http://www.aam314.vzz.net/EB/Boethius.html
Boethius, Anicius Manlius Severinus
Born: AD 470-475?, Rome? [Italy]
Died: 524, Pavia? Roman scholar, Christian philosopher, and statesman, author of the celebrated De consolatione philosophiae ("Consolation of Philosophy"), a largely Neoplatonic work in which the pursuit of wisdom and the love of God are described as the true sources of human happiness. The most succinct biography of Boethius, and the oldest, was written by Cassiodorus, his senatorial colleague, who cited him as an accomplished orator who delivered a fine eulogy of Theodoric, king of the Ostrogoths who made himself king of Italy. Cassiodorus also mentioned that Boethius wrote on theology, composed a pastoral poem, and was most famous as a translator of works of Greek logic and mathematics. Other ancient sources, including Boethius' own De consolatione philosophiae , give more details. He belonged to the ancient Roman family of the Anicii, which had been Christian for about a century and of which Emperor Olybrius had been a member. Boethius' father had been consul in 487 but died soon afterward, and Boethius was raised by Quintus Aurelius Memmius Symmachus, whose daughter Rusticiana he married. He became consul in 510 under the Ostrogothic king Theodoric. Although little of Boethius' education is known, he was evidently well trained in Greek. His early works on arithmetic and music are extant, both based on Greek handbooks by Nicomachus of Gerasa, a 1st-century-AD Palestinian mathematician. There is little that survives of Boethius' geometry, and there is nothing of his astronomy.

Stu Savory, 2004.
If you ask people these days to name a famous mathematician, surveys show the most popular answer to be Albert Einstein . Einstein himself used to like to quote Sir Isaac Newton's famous humble line "If I have seen further than other men, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." So I asked myself, who were these giants, i.e. famous pre-Einstein mathematicians. Here's the list of the top 100 or so, sorted chronologically. How many do you know? That means you can state what they were famous for, off the cuff, no googling!
