Newcomb participated in several eclipse expeditions and in 1882 went to the Cape of Good Hope to observe the transit of Venus. The record of many of his researches was published in the Astronomical Papers of the American Ephemeris, a series that he established in 1879. His investigations and computations of the orbits of six planets resulted in his tables of the planetary system, which were almost universally adopted by the observatories of the world. Newcomb urged the use of a common system of constants and fundamental stars by astronomers of all nations. A subject to which he devoted many years of study was the theory of the moon's motion. From the formulas he established it was possible to construct accurate lunar tables. His writings include a valuable early paper, On the Secular Variations and Mutual Relations of the Orbits of the Asteroids (1860) and On the Motion of Hyperion See his Reminiscences of an Astronomer (1903); study by L. M. Dunphy (1956).

    Newcomb, Simon (1835-1909)
A brilliant Canadian-born American mathematical astronomer whose work on the orbital motion of the planets of the solar system was the cornerstone of the nautical and astronomical almanacs of the United States and Britain until as recently as 1984; his accomplishments are all the more remarkable because he was almost entirely self-taught. At age 18, with little money or schooling, Newcomb made his way on foot from his native Nova Scotia to the United States. Eventually he found employment as a computer with the Nautical Almanac Office (then in Cambridge, Massachusetts) and earned a B.S. at Harvard. He rose to become, in 1877, superintendant of the Nautical Almanac Office, later part of the U.S. Naval Observatory , and served concurrently as professor of mathematics and astronomy at Johns Hopkins University. He used carefully analyzed measurements of stellar and planetary positions to compute motions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and satellites, and also measured the speed of light and the constant of precession . His values for the fundamental constants of astronomy were used by the world’s almanac makers for decades. A profuse writer on mathematics, economics, and other subjects, Newcomb also provided important guidance on the construction of some the world’s largest telescopes and was a leader in American science. He was the first president of the

    Newcomb, Simon
Canadian-born US mathematician and astronomer who compiled charts and tables of astronomical data with phenomenal accuracy. His calculations of the motions of the bodies in the Solar System were in use as daily reference all over the world for more than 50 years, and the system of astronomical constants for which he was most responsible is still the standard.
Newcomb was born in Wallace, Nova Scotia, and had little or no formal education. In his teens he ran away to the USA, and eventually enrolled at Harvard. In 1861 he joined the navy, where he was assigned to the US Naval Observatory at Washington DC, and in 1877 put in charge of the American Nautical Almanac office. From 1884 he was also professor of mathematics and astronomy at Johns Hopkins University. He retired with the rank of rear admiral.
At the Nautical Almanac office, Newcomb started the great work that was to occupy the rest of his life: the calculation of the motions of the bodies in the Solar System. The results were published in Astronomical Papers Prepared for the Use of the American Ephemeris and Nautical Almanac, a series that he founded 1879.
With his British counterpart Arthur Matthew Weld Downing (1850-1917), Newcomb established a universal standard system of astronomical constants. This was adopted at an international conference 1896, and again 1950.
