JOHN NEPOMUCENE NEUMANN Memorial 5 January Profile Son of Philip, who was German and owned a stocking factory, and Agnes Neumann who was Czech. John was a small and quiet boy with four sisters and a brother, and was named after Saint John Nepomucene . An excellent student, John early felt drawn to religious life. Seminarian at Budweis, Bohemia in , he studied astronomy and botany in addition to theological topics. Studied theology at Charles Ferdinand University at Prague in When time came for his ordination , the bishop was sick; the date for was never reset because Bohemia had an over-abundance of priests . John decided to go to America to ask for ordination and work with emigres. He walked most of the way to France , then took ship for America John arrived unannounced in Manhattan in Bishop John Dubois was happy to see him as there were 36 priests for the 200,000 Catholics in New York and New Jersey . John was ordained on 28 June , and sent to Buffalo. There the parish priest Father Pax, gave him the choice of the city of Buffalo or of the rural area; John chose the more difficult country area. He stayed in a small town with an unfinished church, and when it was completed, he moved to a town with a log church. There he built himself a small log cabin, rarely lit a fire, slept little, often lived on bread and water, and walked miles to visit farm after remote farm. St. John Nepomucene Neumann HIS FASCINATING LIFE STORY The Bishop of Philadelphia lay crumpled in the snow a few blocks from his new cathedral on Logan Square. By the time a priest reached him with the holy oils, Bishop Neumann was dead. That was January 5, 1860. At his own request Bishop Neumann was buried in a basement crypt in Saint Peter's Church where he would be with his Redemptorist confreres. PILGRIMAGES TO BISHOP'S TOMB Now pilgrims came from all over the world. From his native Bohemia, from Germany and Holland they came to claim allegiance to one of their own. Pope John Paul II made it a point to visit the Shrine when he came to Philadelphia to attend the Eucharistic Congress. Yes, the City of Brotherly Love was bursting with joy. The diocesan seminarians from St. Charles, Overbrook, have made annual pilgrimages to his tomb. The various Irish Societies of Philadelphia have made formal pilgrimages to the tomb of this humble man of God who, as bishop, did so much for their immigrant forebears in the 1850's this "foreigner" who went to the trouble of studying enough Irish to be able to hear the confessions of those who "had no English," up in the coal regions of nineteenth century Pennsylvania. Those of Italian extraction remember Bishop Neumann as the founder of the first national parish for Italians in the United States. At a time when there was no priest to speak their language, no one to care for them, Bishop Neumann, who had studied Italian as a seminarian in Bohemia, gathered them together in his private chapel and preached to them in their mother tongue. In 1855 he Purchased a Methodist Church in South Philadelphia, dedicated it to St. Mary Magdalene de Pazzi, and gave them one of his seminary professors, Father John Tornatore, C.M., to be their pastor.

CIN Gabriel Mail Search J-M-J Saint John Nepomucene Neumann was born at Pachitz in Bohemia in AD 1811. He was the third of six children born to a German father and Czech mother. In his youth John showed a strong intellectual ability along with the call to the religious life. He studied at Budweis, and then entered the seminary there. After he accumulated his studies he was note ordained, because his home diocese had a surplus of clergy. He decided to venture to the New World, and was ordained in Buffalo by Bishop James Dubois in AD 1836. For four years he worked in pastoral work before he joined the Redemptorists. John was for a time vice-province of the order, but spent most of his time in parish work establishing schools. In AD 1852 he was promoted to the See of Philadelphia by Pope Pius IX. This allowed now Archbishop Neumann to greatly expand the scope of his schooling, and he invited orders of teaching brothers and nuns in and increased the schools in the Archdiocese by twentyfold. He established new parishes, the forty hours devotion, and building the cathedral. In addition the bishop wrote copiously. His most complicated works were however written in his native language of German. The two catechisms he authored remained in use for most of the 19th century. Saint John Nepomucene Neumann died while out on a street in Philadelphia on the fifth of January, AD 1860.

January 5 ST. JOHN NEUMANN Not only was John Neumann quiet, he was short-five feet, two inches tall. His eyes were very kind and he smiled a lot. He was born on March 28, 1811, in Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic. His parents were Philip and Agnes Neumann. He had four sisters and a brother. After college, John entered the seminary. When time came for ordination, the bishop was sick. The date was never set because Bohemia had enough priests at the time. Since he had been reading about missionary activities in the United States, John decided to go to America to ask for ordination. He walked most of the way to France and then boarded the ship Europa. John joined the Redemptorist order and continued his missionary work. He became bishop of Philadelphia in 1852. Bishop Neumann built fifty churches and began building a cathedral. He opened almost one hundred schools, and the number of parochial school students grew from five hundred to nine thousand. Bishop Neumann's health never improved much, but people were still very surprised when he died suddenly on January 5, 1860. He was walking home from an appointment when he fell to the ground with a stroke. He was carried into the nearest house and died there at 3:00PM. In March Bishop Neumann would have been forty-nine. He was proclaimed a saint by Pope Paul VI on June 19, 1977.

Bishop John Nepomucene Neumann: An American Saint By Brother John Neumann, M.I.C.M., Tertiary On March 28, 1811 Good Friday, according to the family tradition our beloved saint was born and baptized in the obscure mountain village of Prachatitz in Bohemia. He was named after the holy Bohemian martyr and patron of the confessional seal, Saint John Nepomucene. John, the third of six children, from his earliest years evinced rare qualities that prompted many a remark for his pious character and gifted intelligence. His was a probing mind, preoccupied even at a tender age with philosophic wonder about everything in God's creation. And from the time he learned to read, he could hardly be pried away from a book. "My mother," he said, "used to chide me, and call me book mad, a bibliomaniac." Writing a short sketch of his life in later years, he recalled: "Our education was conducted in accordance with the good old Catholic method, for our parents were thorough Christians." It is indisputably clear in all his writings that in the "good old Catholic" school, which John Neumann cherished, the name "Christian" always and only meant "Catholic." And, indeed, his parents, Philip and Agnes Neumann (pronounced noy ' mahn), were deeply devout Catholics, who were well qualified for rearing a saint. John Nepomucene Neumann seems to have been blessed with a special grace from his childhood. As a young boy regularly joining his mother at daily Mass, he showed fervent love for the Holy Sacrifice, So advanced was he in catechetical studies that by special privilege he was permitted to receive First Communion and Confirmation with boys two years his senior. Having been chosen for his modesty and recollection to be an altar boy, he always fasted before serving Mass, even on the days he could not receive Our Lord. (Remember that daily Communion was not a universal privilege until the decree of Pope Saint Pius X in 1905.)

John Louis Von Neumann (1903-1957) Este científico matemático ocupa un lugar privilegiado en la historia de la computación debido a sus múltiples e importantísimos aportes a las computadoras de la primera generación. Nació el 28 de Diciembre de 1903 en Budapest (Hungría), llegando a ser uno de los más brillantes matemáticos de la era de la computación. Von Neumann fue un niño prodigio que a la edad de 6 años podía dividir mentalmente cifras de 8 dígitos. Recibió una temprana educación en su ciudad natal, bajo el tutelaje del matemático M. Fekete conjuntamente con el cual publicó su primer trabajo a la edad de 18 años. En 1921 ingresó a la facultad de Química de la Universidad de Budapest, pero decidió continuar sus estudios en Berlin y Zurich, graduándose de Ingeniero Químico en 1925. Inmediatamente después de graduado volvió a sus investigaciones y estudios de las matemáticas de las cuales fue un apasionado, logrando un doctorado en 1928. Rápidamente ganó una reputación como un excelente matemático y en 1930 fue invitado a visitar la Universidad de Princeton (USA). Al fundarse el Instituto de Estudios Avanzados en 1933, Von Neumman fue elegido como uno de sus únicos 6 profesores matemáticos, actividad que realizó el resto de su vida. A través de los años desempeñó muchas cátedras en universidades de prestigio en todo el mundo, tales como Harvard, Pensilvania, Princeton, Roma, Amsterdam, etc. En 1956 fue elgido miembro honorario de la Academia de Ciencias Exactas en Lima, Perú.
