Abstract:
The talk is on partial results about a graph-theoretic conjecture that is equivalent to the 40 year old Hanna Neumann Conjecture on the intersection of free groups. By the Nielsen-Schreier theorem any subgroup of a free group is free. Let us take two subgroups of a free group now. Clearly both of them and also the intersection is free and therefore characterised up to isomorphism by their rank (number of free generators). Suppose the two subgroups have finite ranks k+1 and l+1 what can be the rank of the intersection. Hanna Neumann conjectured that kl+1 is an upper bound but was only able to prove that the rank is at most 2kl+1. This upper bound has been hardly improved since. While connection to graph theory was noted earlier, W. Dicks has recently proved that the following Amalgamated Graph Conjecture is equivalent to a strengthened form the Hanna Neumann Conjecture. By graph we mean two-colored simple bipartite graphs, that is the two-coloring is also given with the graph and oppositely colored graphs are not considered isomorphic (unless they are symmetric).

This year, EWM has had many activities, some international, some local; some were being planned in the last Newsletter, some are reported on in this number. In the follow-up to the Trieste meeting, the Proceedings have been prepared and presented on the web and are being printed; we have obtained a grant from the EU which helped cover expenses of the meeting and proceedings. The Oxford workshop on moduli spaces in mathematics and physics took place in July, the round table at the International Congress in Mathematics in Berlin in August, meetings in Germany in October and in Great Britain in April, to name a few events which you can read about on the web and here. Famous Mathematicians from Underrepresented Groups
(Version of 5 March 1998. This web page is still under construction.) Explanation: In our math building is a bulletin board titled "This Week in Mathematics" you can see both a web version of the bulletin board and a more detailed explanation . The bulletin board has several sections: this week's cool math link, this week's birthday, this week's math problem, and our department's calendar for the week. I change the four sheets each week; that's one of my duties as our department's webmaster. I've mostly been taking the biographies from the MacTutor website. They have the biographies of 1100 famous mathematicians from history, indexed alphabetically and also chronologically. That averages around 20 per week, so I follow my own taste in choosing one of those approximately 20 for this week's birthday. I don't always choose the "best mathematician" other criteria enter into my decisions too, such as who has the most interesting biography. The purpose of the bulletin board is to attract the attention of students walking past it, and perhaps lure some of them into mathematics. It recently occurred to me that one of the other purposes is to provide role models. Consequently, it would be a good idea to give additional weight to famous mathematicians from ethnic groups that have been underrepresented in our history books and/or denied opportunities to achieve in the past. For instance, until recently, women were mostly prevented from doing mathematics, so relatively few women have become famous in mathematics. We want to end this sort of discrimination, so those few famous women mathematicians should be publicized; they provide role models and give present-day young women the message that they can become mathematicians too. For this reason
