Using Projects in the Mathematics Classroom to Enhance Instruction and Incorporate History of Mathematics Paper Presented at the NCTM 77th Annual Meeting San Francisco, California April 22, 1999 Dawn Leigh Anderson University of Georgia Students should have numerous and varied experiences related to the cultural, historical, and scientific evolution of mathematics so that they can appreciate the role of mathematics in the development of our contemporary society and explore relationships among mathematics and the disciplines it serves: the physical and the life sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities ( Standards , 1989, p. 5).

Ann. The term VANISHING POINT was coined by Brook Taylor (1685-1731), according to Franceschetti (p. 500). The term VARIABLE was introduced by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) (Kline, page 340). Variable is found in English as an adjective in 1710 in Lexicon Technicum by J. Harris: " Variable Quantities, in Fluxions, are such as are supposed to be continually increasing or decreasing; and so do by the motion of their said Increase or Decrease Generate Lines, Areas or Solidities" (OED2). Variable is found in English as a noun in 1816 in a translation of Lacroix's Differential and Integral Calculus : "The limit of the ratio..will be obtained by dividing the differential of the function by that of the variable" (OED2). Some features of the program
There are some new features being introduced to the program for Making Mathematics Vital The Bernhard Neumann Memorial Fellowships have been established by the AAMT to honour the contributions Bernhard made to the Association and mathematics education generally. These awards will assist outstanding teachers from around the country to attend. The generous support of the Commonwealth Bank Foundation will provide support for teachers from remote and rural locations to attend the conference. More information on eligibility and how to apply will be made available on this site.

SUMMARY:
I was a self-taught combinatorial group theorist, read Magnus-Karrass-Solitar and Lyndon-Schupp, and wrote the master thesis "Lower central series of free groups". The paper [1] was a part of the thesis. It gives a solution of a problem of Plonka [P]: The subgroup of symmetric elements in a free nilpotent group of a given nilpotency class stabilizes with the rank. The same results was later reproved by O. Macedonska-Novalska [Ma]. The papers [2] and [3] give two generalizations of a theorem of Hanna Neumann about composite operations in groups [N].

Report on the Berlin ICM
Sylvia Wiegand
Reprinted from AWM Newsletter , 28(6), November-December 1998, pp. 3-8. The International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) held Aug 18-23 in Berlin included many wonderful activities, and all went smoothly due to the impressive organization of the event. Organizer Martin Groetschel said, "We're not professionals like the AMS, so we work harder." Martin took great care with each small detail of the part of the program highlighting women in mathematics. The events highlighting women, cooperatively organized by the AWM , the European Women in Mathematics (EWM) and other groups of women in mathematics, were marvelous. They included a panel discussion featuring women with varied perspectives from many different countries, a film on women in mathematics in several countries, a special Emmy Noether lecture given by Cathleen Morawetz, and a congenial lunch gathering of about fifty people. ( Web editor's note: Check out the pictures from ICM '98 too!
