An Interview with Gareth A. Jones
Gareth A. Jones I acquired this piece of information from Nigel Hitchin back in 1986. Let me see if I get it right. You were colleagues in Oxford and during your first year you were taught by Michael Atiyah. What course was it and how was he as a teacher for students just starting university? Nigel Hitchin and I were students together at Jesus College, Oxford, from 1965 to 1971. Oxford, like Cambridge, consists of several dozen colleges, each containing a few hundred students. Weekly individual teaching is provided by college tutors, but lecture courses and examinations are organized by the University departments. In my time, the mathematics tutors at Jesus College, Edward Thompson for Pure Mathematics and Christopher Bradley for Applied Mathematics, had excellent reputations as teachers, so the standard of mathematics in the college was very high. There were eight mathematics students there in my year: among them, Nigel Hitchin went on to do great work in geometry with Atiyah and Donaldson, while Lyn Thomas, after getting a doctorate in quantum theory, became one of the leading figures in the Operations Research community. Before your Oxford days how was your life? I think you come from Wales. Did you realize at an early age that Mathematics was the science you wanted to devote your life to?

Hanns R. Neumann started to operate as a coffee broker under his own name in 1934 in Hamburg. In 1988 the company Hanns R. Neumann took over Bernhard Rothfos AG, which beginnings stem back to the year 1922. Neumann Kaffee Gruppe was created in 1990 by integrating the Neumann and Rothfos companies. A Management Board under the leadership of Michael R. Neumann piloted the progress of Neumann Kaffee Gruppe to a well-organised global venture, which maintains a multi-local presence to serve its partners all over the world. The blending of traditional Hanseatic business principles with a global focus on producer country interest and customer dedication is central to the group's operations. Since the beginning of 2004, David M. Neumann has succeeded Michael R. Neumann as Speaker of the Board. Michael R. Neumann continues to actively contribute to Neumann Kaffee Gruppe's strategic development as Chairman of the Supervisory Board and in various consulting functions.

The B.H. Neumann Prize This Prize is awarded for the most outstanding talk presented by a student at the Annual Meeting of the Australian Mathematical Society. The prize is named for Professor Bernhard H. Neumann AC FAA FRS FAustMS, who has played a central role in the Society since its founding. As well as having a distinguished research record in group theory, Bernhard Neumann has been a strong supporter of programs for talented students at all levels of their mathematical education. Rules for the B.H. Neumann Prize The following rules apply.
  • Only students who are members of the Australian Mathematical Society are eligible.
  • Student will mean a person studying either full-time or part-time, without age limit. Furthermore the student may be either postgraduate or undergraduate.
  • The Prize is to be at a value as determined from time to time by Council and a certificate suitable for framing will be presented.
  • The Prize will be awarded at the Society's Annual Dinner, to which the Prizewinner will be invited as a guest.
  • All student talks should be scheduled to be given by the day preceding the Annual Dinner so that the Prize Committee can have proper discussion and also so that the Prizewinner can be informed in good time to attend the Dinner.

    Modules with Morita-Equivalent Endomorphism Rings,
    pp. 665-681.
ABSTRACT. Let A and B be modules, which are faithfully flat over their endomorphism ring. The categories of A-solvable and B-solvable modules coincide if and only if A and B are similar. While similar modules have Morita equivalent endomorphism rings, the failure of the converse raises the question which module-theoretic properties are shared by modules with equivalent endomorphism rings. This paper addresses this question by investigating equivalences between full subcategories of the categories of A- and B-solvable modules, respectively. In particular, every equivalence between the category of A-solvable and the category of B-solvable modules is induced by a Morita equivalence between E(A) and E(B) if A and B are faithfully flat as modules over their endomorphism ring. Several examples show that these results may fail without the faithfulness condition.

Abstract February 18 : Alex Feingold Title : ``Fusion Algebras and Tensor Algebras: Geometrical Aspects of Computational Algorithms'' Abstract : For any finite dimensional simple Lie algebra, g, and any positive integer, k, there is a commutative, associative algebra, F(g,k), with a distinguished basis indexed by a finite set of dominant integral weights of g, determined by k. The structure constants with respect to this distinguished basis are non-negative integers with special properties. The tensor algebra of g is a commutative, associative algebra, T(g), with a distinguished basis indexed by all the dominant integral weights of g. The structure constants of T(g) are dimensions of certain subspaces, so they are certainly non-negative integers. Algorithms for computing these structure constants for F(g,k) and for T(g) will be discussed, giving some relations between them.

HName: Neumann, Carl, [sometimes Karl] DateBorn: 1860 Placeborn: Mannheim, Germany Datedied: 1934 Placedied: Heidelberg, Germany HDescrip: University of Heidelberg professor of art; wrote first full monograph on Rembrandt (1906). Neumann was the son of a wealthy Jewish mercantile family. In 1878 he entered the university in Heidelberg to study history. In 1880 he switched to Berlin, attending the lectures of Nitsch and the historian Heinrich von Treitschke (1834-1896). He returned to Heidelberg in 1882 to receive his Ph.D. with a dissertation topic on Bernhard von Clairvaux and the beginnings of the second crusade. Neumann went to Basel to hear the lectures Jacob Burckhardt (q.v.), which turned his interest to art history. At the end of the 1880 Neuman began displaying signs of mental illness, depression and long hospital stays. He spent 1882 studying classical art at the Glyptothek in Munich. It was around this time that Neumann also became devoted to modern art. His book Der Kampf um die neue Kunst (The Struggle for New Art) was published in 1892. Neumann's preference was for the classicizing tendencies of artists such as Anselm Feuerbach. Between 1884 and1887 Neumann made several journeys to Italy. He converted to Protestantism (from Judiasm) in 1887. In 1894 he completed his
