The Velikovsky Affair continues to generate indignation among supporters, as indicated by the recent book Gould and Velikovsky, edited by Pearlman. Unfortunately, many of the issues that continue to fuel such indignation, verging on rage, are demonstrably phoney. I discussed this problem in the concluding section "Denouement" of my memoir "Of Lessons Legacies and Litmus Tests: A Velikovsky Potpourri" written for Aeon in 1991; but it did not appear there because Part 2 was cancelled in June 1993 after Part 1 appeared in Aeon 3:1, 1992. Langton One of the great discoveries of the nineteenth century was a discovery about the past -the existence of a highly sophisticated mathematical astronomy among the ancient Babylonians. Otto Neugebauer tells the story in The Exact Sciences in Antiquity , pp. 103105 (full references are given below). The discoverers were three Jesuit priests. The first, Johann Nepomuk Strassmaier, an Assyriologist, worked in the British Museum for nearly twenty years, patiently and tirelessly copying into his notebooks the contents of unpublished clay tablets from Babylon. Among these were many with astronomical contents, which Strassmaier was unable to comprehend. He invoked the help of Joseph Epping, a professor of mathematics and astronomy, then at Quito, Ecuador. Epping's first results were published in 1881, in an obscure Catholic theological periodical. He had been able to decipher the names of the planets and zodiacal signs and had uncovered the main aspects of the Babylonian lunar theory. After Epping's death, his work was continued by Franz Xaver Kugler. The Babylonian astronomers who created these tablets -the "Chaldeans" of the Book of Daniel: "The king [Belshazzar] cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers," (Daniel 5:7)- are referred to by Noel Swerdlow, in the book under review, as the "Scribes of Enuma Anu Enlil". The "Enuma Anu Enlil" is a vast series of seventy tablets containing thousands of omens, originally from the second millenium B.C., referring to the appearances of the sun, moon and planets, as well as meteorological phenomena. ("Enuma Anu Enlil" just means "when Anu and Enlil"; these are the opening words of the first tablet. Anu and Enlil were Sumerian gods.) So wie er die Sache darstellt, handelte es sich dabei nicht um Geheimwissenschaft und man kann vermuten, dass dieses Wissen den Minoern zumindest prinzipiell zugänglich gewesen sein kann. Kontakte hat es über den gesamten Raum zwischen Kreta, Babylon und Ägypten offenbar gegeben. Drittens gehört sein Buch - geschrieben 1957 und wieder aufgelegt 1969 - in eine Klasse mit John Chadwicks Decipherment of Linear B Neugebauer behandelt die Entwicklung der Mathematik von den "alten" Babyloniern (1800 v.Chr) bis hin zur hellenistischen Astronomie des Ptolemäus, dach dem es - so der Autor - bis zur Zeit von Newton in vielerlei Hinsicht kaum echte Weiterentwicklung gab. Stil und Einstellung Neugebauers wird vielleicht am schönsten ausgedrückt durch ein Zitat von ihm selbst: "I see the main purpose of historical studies in the unfolding of the stupendous wealth of phenomena which are connected with any phase of human history and thus to counteract the natural tendency toward oversimplification and philosophical constructions which are the faithful companions of ignorance."

Dozent: Dr. Timo Stickler Veranstaltungsart: Übung zur Alten Geschichte Thema: Quellen zur Geschichte und Kultur der Etrusker Beginn: Montag, 27.10.2003 Zeit: Montag, 14 s.t. - 15.30 Uhr Ort: Seminar für Alte Geschichte, Residenz Inhaltsübersicht: Bücher über die Etrusker verkaufen sich auch zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts immer noch gut, vor allem wenn man auf dem Buchtitel Vokabeln wie "Geheimnis", "Rätsel" oder "entziffern" unterbringt. In unserer Übung werden wir sehen, wie viel hingegen die Etruskologie in den letzten Jahrzehnten geleistet hat, wieviel wir heute von der Geschichte und Kultur, der Religion und selbst der Sprache dieses bedeutenden mediterranen Volkes wissen. Im Vordergrund steht die Analyse von Textquellen; doch auch die Ergebnisse der Nachbarwissenschaften, besonders der Archäologie, werden zu Wort kommen. Einführende Literatur: Einen aktuellen Überblick über die Etruskologie, ihren Forschungsgegenstand und ihre Ergebnisse, vermitteln die einschlägigen Artikel im "Neuen Pauly" von G. Camporeale u.a., Etrusci, Etruria, DNP 4, 1998, 167-195 (darin zahlreiche Literaturhinweise). Eine zusammenhängende, knappe Darstellung bietet Fr. Prayon, Die Etrusker. Geschichte - Religion - Kunst, München 1996. Voraussetzung für Scheinerwerb: Aktive Mitarbeit, Bereitschaft zur Übernahme von Kleinreferaten.
