April 2003 The Life and Times of Humphrey Repton Humphrey Repton was born in Norfolk in 1752 to moderately affluent parents. His father sent Humphrey to Holland to be educated and it was while he was in Holland that he became interested in gardening. The style of gardens in Holland tended to be of a very formal nature. Towards the end of the 18th century this type of garden was rapidly disappearing because it was thought that formal gardens were far too rigid, pompous and looked quite unnatural. Thoughts which Humphrey Repton agreed with. While he was in Holland, Repton had married and on his return to England he decided not to make gardening his career immediately, but chose to follow a career as a general merchant in Norwich. After some time as a merchant he found this type of career unsatisfying so he promptly retired and settled down in Susted Old Hall in Norfolk to become an English country gentleman. As the size of his family increased he found it necessary to move to a larger house in Hare Street in Essex, it was while living at Hare Street that he took the decision to become a landscape gardener. His very first "contract" was to be the garden of his new home at Hare Street and involved the removal of an old fence and replacing some ducks with flowers.

This page contains details about each years winning submission(s). More general information about the award is also available. J. Michael Harrison The 2004 John von Neumann Theory Prize is awarded to J. Michael Harrison for his profound contributions to two major areas of operations research and management science: stochastic networks and mathematical finance. Over the past 30 years, Harrison has spearheaded the formulation, development and application of the theory of Brownian networks for performance analysis and control of stochastic processing networks. He has defined a framework with elegance and depth, communicating clearly its purpose and outstanding issues, and with Stanford students and co-authors has repeatedly demonstrated its success in structuring and addressing a range of important questions that arise in application areas as diverse as manufacturing and telecommunications. Under his intellectual leadership, heavy traffic theory has gone from being an esoteric pursuit practiced by a small band of devotees to being a powerful and widely accepted technique, used by many researchers in the applied probability/queueing community. In a pair of papers co-authored respectively with David Kreps and Stanley Pliska, Harrison showed that a price process is arbitrage free if and only if it is, when appropriately renormalized, a martingale for some equivalent probability measure. The careful definition and structuring of the general framework has stood the test of time: most of the theory of financial asset pricing in a dynamic setting is based squarely on the machinery laid down by Harrison and his collaborators. This literature numbers literally in the thousands of research papers. The equivalent martingale measure is also now a standard starting point for the analysis of optimal portfolio choice, a subject almost as large. It is difficult to overstate the impact that this work has had, ranging from the most abstract theory of stochastic processes to the day-to-day functioning of the financial industry.

I was born in Budapest, Hungary, on May 29, 1920. The high school my parents chose for me was the Lutheran Gymnasium in Budapest, one of the best schools in Hungary, with such distinguished alumni as John von Neumann and Eugene Wigner . I was very happy in this school and received a superb education. In 1937, the year I graduated from it, I won the First Prize in Mathematics at the Hungary-wide annual competition for high school students.
My parents owned a pharmacy in Budapest, which gave us a comfortable living. As I was their only child, they wanted me to become a pharmacist. But my own preference would have been to study philosophy and mathematics. Yet, in 1937 when I actually had to decide my field of study, I chose pharmacy in accordance with my parents' wishes. I did so because Hitler was in power in Germany, and his influence was steadily increasing also in Hungary. I knew that as a pharmacy student I would obtain military deferment. As I was of Jewish origin, this meant that I would not have to serve in a forced labor unit of the Hungarian army.
As a result, I did have military deferment until the German army occupied Hungary in March 1944. Then I did have to serve in a labor unit from May to November 1944.

Nash, John F., Jr.
Encyclopedia Article Nash, John F., Jr. , born in 1928, American mathematician and corecipient of the 1994 Nobel Prize in economics for his pioneering work in game theory . Nash shared the Nobel Prize with American economist John C. Harsanyi and German mathematician and economist Reinhard Selten. The mathematical principles of game theory involve an analysis of interactions among various economic players. In his 1950 doctoral thesis, Noncooperative Games , Nash focused on rivalries in which all players could benefit and showed that there were solutions to game theory problems in which no player would be able to do better than any other player, even if he or she knew what the other players were doing. He distinguished between cooperative games, in which binding agreements are made, and noncooperative games, in which binding agreements are not feasible. He formulated the “Nash equilibrium,” which involves a universal solution concept for noncooperative games, and “Nash’s bargaining solution,” a basic solution for cooperative games. Both have been applied extensively in different branches of economic theory.

John Nash
Geboren: 13.
