Home Biography A Description of the Admirable Table of Logarithms Napier's Rods ... References J ohn Napier was a famous Scottish theologian and mathematician who lived between 1550 and 1617. He spent his entire life seeking knowledge, and working to devise better ways of doing everything from growing crops to performing mathematical calculations. Napier was so intelligent, many of the locals believed him to be in league with the Devil, but such claims never went further than the rumor mill, In fact, Napier himself, and ardent protestant, accused the Pope of being the Anti-Christ, and in a document he considered to be his finest achievement, went as far as predicting the end of the world. In addition to being an educated man, Napier was also a nobleman, a baron, the 7th Laird of Merchiston, and owner of a considerable estate. Napier was loved by all, and he was respected by many illustrious scientists and mathematicians of the age, to the point of being considered some sort of scientific superstar, with "fans" awaiting his next publication the way we await the release of a movie or pop album. Napier's "greatest hits" include such groundbreaking texts as A Description of the Admirable Table of Logarithms, and his invention of divining rods used as multiplication tables. John Napier 's father, Archibald Napier, was an important man in late 16 th century Scotland. His family had owned the Merchiston estate from the 1430s when one of his ancestors acquired the estate, becoming the first Napare of Merchiston. (We shall comment shortly on the different spellings of Napier's name.) The family also owned estates at Lennox and at Menteith and a residence at Gartness. Archibald Napier married Janet Bothwell, the sister of the Bishop of Orkney, in 1549 when he was only 15 years old. Their son John Napier was born the following year. Archibald Napier was a justice-depute and was knighted in 1565. He was appointed Master of the Mint in 1582. Before continuing we should comment on the spelling of John Napier. The name John is most easily dealt with as John Napier, and almost everyone else around his time, used the old spelling "Jhone". His surname appears in a large variety of different spellings. The forms Napeir, Nepair, Nepeir, Neper, Napare, Naper, Naipper are all seen but John Napier would most commonly have been written Jhone Neper at that time. The only form of Napier that we are sure would not have been used in Napier's lifetime was the present modern spelling "Napier"!

John Napier
John Napier, who was born in Edinburgh and died there on 4 April 1617, is of course famous as the mathematician who first discovered the theory of logarithms, once the delight of schoolchildren everywhere, but now sadly abolished to advanced classes since the advent of the electronic calculator. This great Scot, a reclusive inventor who developed bulletproof clothing in addition to the ivory ÒbonesÓ with which he performed his logarithmic calculations, and who was said to keep a black cockerel as his familiar, can also be called a poet thanks to a single surviving work: ÒA Plaine Discovery of the Whole Revelation of St. JohnÓ (1593). Those who have seen it conclude that in devoting himself to mathematics Napier made the right career choice. AC A Plaine Discovery of the Whole Revelation of St. John (1593); Rabdologiae seu Numerationes per vigula libri duo (1617); Mirifici logarithmorum canonis constructio (1620).

NAPIER, JOHN Chishoirn of Cromlix, who survived him. By her he had five sons and five daughters. In 1588 he was chosen by the presbytery of Edinburgh one of its commissioners to the General Assembly. The full title of this first work of Napiers is given below.1 It was written in English instead of Latin in order that hereby the simple of this Iland may be instructed ; and the author apologizes for the language and his own mode of expression in the following sentences: Whatsoever therfore through hast, is here rudely and in base language set downe, I doubt not to be pardoned thereof by ~ll good men, who, considering the necessitie of this time, will esteem it more meete to make hast to prevent the rising againe of Antichristian darknes within this Iland, then to prolong the time in painting of language ; and I graunt indeede, and am sure, that in the style of wordes and utterance of language, we shall greatlie differ, for therein I do judge my selfe inferiour to all men: so that scarcely in these high matters could I with long deliberation finde wordes to expresse my minde.2 Napiers Plains Discovery is a serious and laborious work, to which he had devoted years of care and thought. In one sense ~t may be said to stand tc theological literature in Scotland in something of the same position as that occupied by the Canon Mirificus with respect to the scientific literature, for it is the first published original work relating to theological interpretation, and is quite without a predecessor in its own field. Napier lived in the very midst of fiercely contending religious factions; there was but little theological teaching of any kind, and the work related to what were then the leading political and religious questions of the day.

Napier, John, 8th Laird of Merchiston (1550-1617)
Scottish mathematician who invented logarithms 1614 and 'Napier's bones', an early mechanical calculating device for multiplication and division.
It was Napier who first used and then popularized the decimal point to separate the whole number part from the fractional part of a number.
Napier was born in Merchiston Castle, near Edinburgh, and studied at St. Andrews. He never occupied any professional post.
English mathematician Henry Briggs went to Edinburgh in 1616 and later to discuss the logarithmic tables with Napier. Together they worked out improvements, such as the idea of using the base ten.
Napier also made advances in scientific farming, especially by the use of salt as a fertilizer. In 1597 he patented a hydraulic screw by means of which water could be removed from flooded coal pits.
Napier published a denunciation of the Roman Catholic Church, A Plaine Discovery of the Whole Revelation of St John 1593, as well as Mirifici logarithmorum canonis descriptio/Description of the Marvellous Canon of Logarithms 1614 and Mirifici logarithmorum canonis constructio 1619. In Rabdologiae ('numeration by little rods') 1617 he explained his mechanical calculating system and showed how square roots could be extracted by the manipulation of counters on a chessboard.

He invented logarithms and wrote Mirifici logarithmorum canonis descriptio (1614), containing the first logarithmic table and the first use of the word logarithm. His Rabdologiae (1617) gives various methods for abbreviating arithmetical calculations. One method of multiplication uses a system of numbered rods called Napier's rods, or Napier's bones; this was a major improvement on the ancient system of counters then in use. In 1619, after Napier's death, his Mirifici logarithmorum canonis constructio, which gave the method of construction of his logarithms, was published by his son Robert and edited by Henry Briggs. Napier introduced the decimal point in writing numbers. Napier was also known as an outspoken exponent of the Protestant cause. His religious writings include A Plaine Discovery of the Whole Revelation (1593), the earliest Scottish interpretation of the scriptures.
