Significant Scots
John Napier
By Jeremy Hodges in the Daily Mail, July 8, 2000 Yet most Scots know little or nothing about the 16th-century mathematician, philosopher and inventor who, from his secluded tower in Scotland, produced the vital tool needed by mankind to explore the globe and fathom the universe. Without Napier's invention of logarithms and the decimal notation for complex fractions, the discoveries of others such as Galileo, Kepler and Newton would have been hindered by years of long and complex calculations. For centuries his reputation remained almost as obscure as the location of his unmarked grave somewhere in the capital. But his name now lives on at Napier University in Edinburgh, this year celebrating the 450th anniversary of his birth in 1550. Last month an honorary degree was conferred on Brigadier General John Hawkins Napier II, who travelled from his American home to receive the honour bestowed upon him thanks to his illustrious ancestor. Best known in his lifetime as author of a Protestant theological work that probed the prophecies of the Apocalypse to prove the Pope was the Antichrist, Napier was far from the modern idea of a mathematician - he was a late-Renaissance man whose powers of lateral thinking took in everything from agricultural improvement to devising engines of war.

Scottish mathematician who invented logarithms and introduced the use of the decimal point in writing numbers. Encyclopedia Napier, John, 1550–1617, Scottish mathematician. He invented logarithms and wrote Mirifici logarithmorum canonis descriptio (1614), containing the first logarithmic table and the first use of the word logarithm. His Rabdologiae (1617) gives various methods for abbreviating arithmetical calculations. One method of multiplication uses a system of numbered rods called Napier's rods, or Napier's bones; this was a major improvement on the ancient system of counters then in use. In 1619, after Napier's death, his Mirifici logarithmorum canonis constructio, which gave the method of construction of his logarithms, was published by his son Robert and edited by Henry Briggs. Napier introduced the decimal point in writing numbers. Napier was also known as an outspoken exponent of the Protestant cause. His religious writings include A Plaine Discovery of the Whole Revelation (1593), the earliest Scottish interpretation of the scriptures.

John Napier
John Napier John Napier was born in Merchiston, Edinburgh in 1550. He matriculated at St Salvator's College, University of St Andrews in 1563. Very little is known about him during this period although he did study in Paris and travel in Italy and Germany before returning to Scotland to marry in 1571. This was the period of the Scottish Reformation and Napier was very committed to the Protestant cause. In 1594, he wrote his Plaine Discovery of the whole Revelation of Saint John which he addressed to King James VI in a letter. This was the first Scottish book on the interpretation of scripture and has a significant place in the history of theology in Scotland. John Napier is best known as the inventor of Logarithms. While important steps in the theory had been taken in the sixteenth century, notably by Burgi, it was Napier who first brought the subject, in any large way, to the attention of mathematicians. This was in his Mirifici logarithmorum canonis descripto (1614), the first important work on mathematics produced in Great Britain, and one which inspired Briggs, the professor of geometry at Gresham College, London, to develop the system of common logarithms with the decimal base. Napier also invented Napier rods or bones for use in multiplication, a development of a well-known Oriental method, and a number of formulae in trigonometry relating to circular parts. His other mathematical works include De arte logistica (1573 but not published until 1839)

'''John Napier''' ( April 4 ) was a Scottish mathematician and astrologer . He is most remembered as the inventor of natural logarithm s, of ''Napier's bones'' or ''Napier's rods'' and for popularizing the decimal point . He was born in Merchiston Tower, Edinburgh . Although he did not invent the natural logarithm function , it is sometimes known as the '''Napierian Logarithm'''.
Napier is relatively little known outside mathematical circles where he made what is undoubtedly an extremely important advance in the history of mathematics. Logarithms made calculations by hand much easier and thereby opened the way to many later scientific advances. Napier's powers of invention were not confined to logarithms. He published a small treatise on a simple way to perform multiplication, the ''Rabdologiae,'' introducing a calculating device which became known as ''Napier's Rods'' or ''Napier's Bones''. In an appendix he explained another method of multiplication and division using metal plates, which is one of the earliest known attempts at a mechanical means of calculation.
Another useful idea of his is Neper's circle (sometimes called Neper's pentagon), a

20. John Napier
Philosopher and mathematician, inventor of logarithms, inventor of the decimal point.
http://www.scotlandsource.com/about/napier.htm
SCOTLAND ' S PEOPLE Sign our Visitor's Book. JOHN NAPIER PHILOSOPHER and MATHEMATICIAN INVENTOR of LOGARITHMS INVENTOR of the DECIMAL POINT J ohn N apier, eighth Laird of Merchiston was born in Merchiston Tower in 1550 and was known as the 'Marvellous Merchiston', a title which was well-deserved, for his genius and imaginative vision encompassed a number of fields. At the age of thirteen Napier went to St Salvator 's College in St Andrews but left without graduating. If is thought that he then travelled in Europe between 1566 to 7577, perhaps studying in Paris or Holland though there is no corroborative proof of this. It is interesting to note that these were difficult years for Scotland with the dethronement of Queen Mary on the murder of her husband Darnley and the subsequent coronation of her infant son, James. In 1572, he married his second wife, Agnes Chisholm by whom he had five sons and five daughters ( his first wife Elizabeth, from whom he had one son, died within a year ). He died in 1677 and is buried in St Cuthbert 's Churchyard in Edinburgh. Napier is relatively little known outside mathematical circles where he made what is undoubtedly one of the single greatest advances in the history of mathematics. He can be placed within a short lineage of mathematical thinkers, beginning with Archimedes in ancient times and by Newton and Einstein in modern times. Without Napier 's work on logarithms it is difficult to imagine how Kepler and Newton could have made their great advances in later times. His work
