Manin-Mumford problems in genus two (and one?)
by
David Grant
University of Colorado at Boulder
Coauthors: John Boxall (University of Caen) Let C be a curve of genus two defined over a field of characteristic zero, W a Weierstrass point of C, and J the Jacobian of C. We will discuss contraints on the torsion points of J which lie on the image of C embedded into J using W as base point. Relations to an analogous problem for genus one curves will be discussed. Date received: March 18, 2000 Atlas Conferences Inc. Document # caew-37.

and the Neo-Luddite Reaction
Cultural change necessarily involves resistance to change. The term Luddite has been resurrected from a previous era to describe one who distrusts or fears the inevitable changes brought about by new technology. The original Luddite revolt occurred in 1811, an action against the English Textile factories that displaced craftsmen in favor of machines. Today's Luddites continue to raise moral and ethical arguments against the excesses of modern technology to the extent that our inventions and our technical systems have evolved to control us rather than to serve us and to the extent that such leviathans can threaten our essential humanity. In reply to:
there are examples of the following kind: schools of mathematics which
went slowly astray, starting with quite careful rigorous mathematicians
and slowly acquiring bad habits, until patent falsehoods were published.
Of course, the rest of the world, although at first they didn't notice it,
became after a while more and more skeptical, until finally the mistakes
    were pointed out in print.
The best known case is the Italian school of algebraic geometry, which
produced extremely good and deep results for some 50 years, but then
went to pieces. There are 3 key names here Castelnuovo, Enriques and Severi. C was earliest and was totally rigorous, a splendid mathematician. E came next and, as far as I know, never published

The assertion that no major published mathematical results have turned out
to have incomplete proofs caught my eye, and I want to add to this discussion
    2 rather famous examples.
The first is called "Dehn's lemma", concerning when knots in 3-space
are trivial. Dehn published a "proof" in the 30's that was accepted for
10 years or so I believe, then it was seen to be incomplete and the
proof was finally completed by Papakyriakopoulos (spelling probably
wrong) in the 50's. There's a recent article in the "Mathematical
Intelligencer" on Dehn that probably has details.
A second is the so-called "Hard Lefschetz theorem" on the cohomology of algebraic surfaces. Lefschetz actually got a prize for a monograph in which this was the crowning result (in the 20's). It became rather slowly

Haunted Mansion Claim: Shortly after the Haunted Mansion opened at Disneyland, a guest was so frightened by the horrific attraction that he suffered a heart attack. The ride was closed and completely redone, with all the frightening elements being removed and replaced with much tamer versions. Status: False. Origins: The Haunted Mansion has undergone only relatively minor changes since it originally opened, and it has never closed for any appreciable length of time other than for routine maintenance and upgrades. No one has ever suffered a heart attack brought about by touring the attraction. Although construction of the exterior structure for the Haunted Mansion began in 1962 and was completed the next year, the attraction itself did not open until August of 1969. The 1964 New York World's Fair project and the death of Walt Disney in 1966 were factors in delaying the completion of the ride. Because the attraction was made known to the public (and the mansion's facade was visible within the park) so long in advance of its actual opening (handbills announcing a 1963 opening of the Haunted Mansion were given out at Disneyland's Main Entrance in 1961; the mansion's New Orleans Square exterior was completed in 1963; the attraction was previewed in a 1965 episode of "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color"), a story about a forced closure and remodeling was somewhat plausible. Some elements such as the jumping, shrieking heads in the attic

Doctors, with all their education and degreesnay, because of their education and degreessometimes mess us up really good. Since so many of our ailments originate in our heads, or at least partially so, maybe we'd be better off being "treated" by a good friend or by any nice guy willing to listen carefully and comment graciously on their take. Ivan Reitman acquitted himself just fine six years ago with a similar concept, his "Dave," about an incapacitated president who is replaced by a lookalike phony, an ordinary, likeable fellow, who even hires a local accountant to take care of the federal budget. The country prospers. More reviews:

Intervista a DAVID MUMFORD Piergiorgio Odifreddi
