David Mumford. Photo courtesy of The Walt Disney Company. Mumford passed away Monday, January 20, 2003, of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, after struggling with the illness for the past year. He not only left behind his wife and family, longtime friends and co-workers, but he also left behind a multitude of fans who are grateful for his contributions to Disney entertainment. Mumford spent his entire career working at Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI), rising through the ranks to the position of WDI Senior Principal Show Set Designer. He also wrote and produced (along with his longtime collaborator, Bruce Gordon) several books on Disney history, and was well known for his love of Disney lore and generosity in sharing his wealth of knowledge so freely.

The Bookshelf talks with David Mumford Mathematician David Mumford is known for his work in algebraic geometry and vision and pattern theory. A winner of the Fields Medal in 1974, he is currently a professor in the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University. His books include Indra's Pearls: The Vision of Felix Klein (Cambridge University Press, 2002). Could you tell us a bit about yourself? click for full image and caption I'm a mathematician who has worked in both pure and applied math. These are very different: In pure math, the only thing that counts is proving theorems, which is to say unraveling the abstract structures of algebra, geometry and analysis. This is building castles in the sky. On the other hand, in applied math, you seek models for things going on in the real world, models which simplify reality but nonetheless capture the essence of some real system. The pure and applied sides complement each other, and I've spent roughly half my career on each. In applications, I have worked especially on visual perception and the neurophysiology of vision.

Advanced Topics: Categorical Perception (CP)
To get back to the subject-coded version of this reading list or to the full reading list with abstracts click here. This CP phenomenon the compression and expansion of similarities and differences among objects, depending on whether they belong to the same category (in which case they look similar) or to different categories (in which case they look different) has an interesting history, occurs in many very different domains (sight, vision, language, social perception even animals have it), and is now coming to be understood better as its relation to the categories we are born with and the ones we learn is experimentally studied in people and animals, modelled on computers, and investigated in the brain. There are four subtopics, and three sample questions on each. The sample questions may be chosen for your essay question, if you decide to write an essay, and they are also the kind of question that will appear in the examination. Your 20-minute joint paper can be based on any aspect of your subtopic. Most readings can come from "Categorical Perception: The Groundwork of Cognition" (S. Harnad, ed., Cambridge University Press 1987) Nine copies are available on short loan; one can be taken out for a week [(BRN 69170) Hartley Library BF 311 HAR 88054588]. More references (optional) are listed with each sample question. Your subtopic and readings can be discussed with me. Each subtopic will give you a deeper understanding of one aspect of CP, while tying it together with other, related aspects. A full picture will emerge as those working on each subtopic fill in their portion of the CP landscape. The readings will overlap, and so should your own efforts, in working on your questions.

May 27, 2002 Every time I ride the Disneyland Railroad, I think of David Mumford. David (never, never "Dave") told me the story of how he, as a young boy, watched Walt talking about audio-animatronics on Walt Disney Presents. Walt stepped aside, and a curtain opened to reveal the dinosaurs we now see in the Primeval World exhibit. It was at that moment that David decided he wanted to become an Imagineer. When David was old enough, he went to work at Disneyland on the Submarine Voyage. When he graduated from high school, he called WED Enterprises and asked what he needed to do to become a Disney Imagineer. "Well," the woman who answered the phone told him, "we're looking for architects right now."

http://people.interaction-ivrea.it/d.lu/mumford/
As an artist who works in the materials of software and, occasionally, electronics, I am pleasantly surprised to find a historical relationship between aesthetics and technology in Lewis Mumford's Technics and Civilisation.
Technology, Mumford writes, has a way of pervading and sustaining life. The machine often is devised to extend humanity's reach into the world. It provides us with a way of shaping the world around us, and improves our prospects for survival as a species.
This focus on pure function prevents the makers of technology from considering issues of aesthetics in the design of the machine. This is unfortunate; yet, there exist historical precedents in which artists have appropriated the machine for use in existing forms of art. For example, Ferdinand Leger's painting Breakfast Table decomposes whole, organic forms, offering sampled living elements in a mechanical, two-dimensional composition.
Mumford also cites physical forms, such as sculpture and architecture, as examples in which machine and art come together in a single compositional space. For instance, architect Pier Luigi Nervi combines an elegant sense of rhythm and visual harmony with one of mathematics and structural engineering in the construction of the grandstand of a stadium in Florence, Italy.
