David Bryant Mumford (born 11 June ) is an American mathematician known for distinguished work in algebraic geometry , and then for research into vision and pattern theory. He is currently a professor in the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University , having previously had a long academic career at Harvard University . He was born in Worth , in Sussex in England , of an English father and American mother. At Harvard, Mumford became a student of Oscar Zariski , and his work in geometry always combined the traditional geometric insights with the latest algebraic techniques. He published on moduli spaces , with a theory summed up in his book Geometric Invariant Theory , on the equations defining an abelian variety , and on algebraic surfaces . His books Abelian Varieties (with C. P. Ramanujam ) and Curves on an Algebraic Surface combined the old and new theories (to the disadvantage of the former, it has been claimed by

David Mumford 's father, William Mumford, was English and [2]:- ... a visionary with an international perspective, who started an experimental school in Tasmania based on the idea of appropriate technology... Mumford's father worked for the United Nations from its foundations in 1945 and this was his job while Mumford was growing up. Mumford's mother was American and the family lived on Long Island Sound in the United States, a semi-enclosed arm of the North Atlantic Ocean with the New York- Connecticut shore on the north and Long Island to the south. After attending Exeter School, Mumford entered Harvard University. It was at Harvard that Mumford first became interested in algebraic varieties. He relates in [2]:- ... a classmate said "Come with me to hear Professor Zariski 's first lecture, even though we won't understand a word" and Oscar

    Fields Medal
    Historical Introduction
This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.

In addition to his achievements as a visiting professor in the U.S., Tokyo, Paris, and the U.K., he served as the Chairman of the Department of Mathematics at Harvard from 1981 to1984. Mumford was a MacArthur Fellow from 1987 to 1992 and served as president of the International Mathematical Union from 1995 to 1998. Since 1996, he has taught at Brown University. Mumford has received various honorary degrees, awards, and other honors, and is a member of several learned societies, including the London Mathematical Society and the National Academy of Sciences. Mumford received the Fields Medal, the highest honor in mathematics, in 1974.
