Addison, Joseph
The eldest son of a cleric, Addison eventually found himself at Oxford (Queen's and Magdalen). He wrote favourable (whether commissioned, or not) articles concerning certain powerful people and their works; he was duly rewarded with a pension of £300 which allowed Addison to travel extensively throughout the continent for four years. With the victory at Blenheim , in 1704, Addison was commissioned to write The Campaign and this led to further political patronage; he was appointed as a Commissioner of Excise Taxes (the only significant taxes they had in those days). The job as a commissioner, presumably, took little of Addison's time and he was left to pursue his writing. While he had contributed to the Tatler (started by Steele in 1709), Addison started his own paper in 1711, the Spectator ("In the Spectator may be traced the foundations of all that is sound and healthy in modern English thought." In Scotland it became decidedly unpatriotic to support the Radical cause. Government repression drove radicalism underground into serreptitious organisations such as the United Scotsmen, who the Government feared would stage a rising with the United Irishmen in 1798. Revolution, it seemed, was not forthcoming. 1820, The Radical War The BBC is not responsible for the content of external Web sites.

    Notes on Life and Works
Sir Thomas Wyatt was born at Allington Castle, Kent, in 1503, the son of Henry Wyatt and Anne Skinner. He was educated at St. John's College Cambridge, become a diplomat in the service of Henry VIII about 1526 and travelled to Italy first in 1527. After a brief imprisonment for his affair with Anne Boleyn in 1536, the king's second wife who was executed for treason, Wyatt went to Spain as English ambassador to Charles V from 1537 to 1539. In 1541, after the fall of Thomas Cromwell, Wyatt was arrested again and charged with treason but his release followed shortly. He died October 11, 1542, and was buried at Sherborne. Having separated from his wife Elizabeth Brooke, daughter of Lord Cobham, Wyatt was survived by his mistress Elizabeth Darrell and their son Francis.

Convict - Jacobeans - Constitutional Reform
The first political prisoners transported to Australia were convicted in Edinburgh and were known as the "Scottish Martyrs." In the early 1790’s, "reforming" English intellectuals flirted with Jacobeanism. To enable such parsons, lawyers and pamphleteers to make contact with like-minded workers, discussion groups known as "Corresponding Societies" were formed. Their officers called themselves "Jacobeans" but were, in fact, reforming constitutionalists , who wanted to recall Britain's labourers and artisans to a sense of their ancient rights. It was to this audience that Paine's Rights of Man sold most of its million copies in Britain. Tories, thinking of Jacobeanism in terms of the guillotine and the September Massacres, viewed the Corresponding Societies with horror and set out to break them up. They would have liked to stage a crushing trial of some English Jacobeans in England, but they could not be sure a jury would convict them. So their blow against the Corresponding Societies was struck in Scotland, where juries were easily rigged. It fell on a young blue-eyed Scottish lawyer named Thomas Muir (1765-11799), vice-president of a Jacobean discussion group in Glasgow. Muir was an ardent constitutionalist whose offence was to advocate yearly elections of Parliament and a broadening of the Scottish franchise.

Track 14: Thomas Muir of Huntershill
Thomas Muir was one of the Scottish Martyrs, the members of Friends of the People who were tried for sedition before Lord Braxfield in August 1793 and sentenced to transportation to Australia. The brilliant Adam McNaughtan used Muir's own words to make this powerful song. Lord Braxfield was a "hanging judge". When a member of the Scottish establishment pleaded with Braxfield: "But remember, my Lord, Jesus Christ was a reformer too".."Muckle he made o' that. He was hanget." was Braxfield's retort.

    John Muir Trail:
The last section was finished in 1938 and runs for 212 miles north south from Yosemite Valley to Mt. Whitney summit in Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park. Most people also add the miles down to the trailhead at Whitney Portal for a total of 221.
This is one of the more spectacular segments of the Pacific Crest Trail, and has many access points from the east and west sides – making for good loop trips of 3 to 15 days. High granite wilderness with stark blue lakes in glacier carved basins. There are many potential loop trips and a backpacking shuttle service can pick you up or drop you if you are doing JMT segments.
    John Muir Trail area Permits
Required since the routes are thru National Parks or wilderness areas. Get the permit at the point of entry. East side permits are U.S. Forest Service. The Mt. Whitney end is thru the Forest Service by lottery, but there are nearby passes where you can get to the JMT and permits are usually available in advance or at the trailhead. Try to get them online as there is a daily quota at all trailheads.

White Meadow Lake (1948-1998) - Recollections
Visit the White Meadow Lake Home Page The name "White Meadow" was first officially recorded as a name in a 1774 survey for which ownership went back to 1753. In 1774, a survey of 1500 acres covering the White Meadow Tract was returned to the Proprietors of Easter New Jersey. Since this survey bounded and listed parcels of land within it, for which ownership went back as far as 1753, the name was already given to the area by the first settlers. According to tradition, the name "White Meadow" is said to have been suggested by the formation of a white morning mist. People of the present generation believe this is the mist they recall as hanging over a treeless meadow area extending from the present clubhouse to the business district. However, since old maps show either all swamp, or a small body of water surrounded by swamp, covering the comparatively level ground that is now the bed of the present lake, it is reasonable to assume that this area would have had a morning fog or "white meadow." But there is also another story that the name came from beds of white flowers that grew in the swamp. As a result of hundreds of millions of years of erosion, White Meadow lay in an area rich in a black iron, magnetite. (The Indians called it Succasunna, or "black stone"). Iron ore production was the chief economic activity of settlers in the region. As late as 1937, a pamplhlet published by the Morris County Freeholders claimed that iron reserves in Norther New Jersey, mainly in MOrris County, could provide all the iron needs of the nation for 350 years. Most of this store was in Rockaway Township. Artificial lakes were created throughout the Township to provide water power for the iron forges and three blast furnaces at Hibernia, Mount Hope and Spilt Rock.

section="reviews" Book Review by Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat John Muir: America's Naturalist Thomas Locker
    Fulcrum Publishing 05/03 Hardcover $17.95
ISBN 1555913938 "The grand show is eternal. It is always sunrise somewhere; the dew is never dried up at once; a shower is always falling; vapor ever rising. Eternal sunrise, eternal sunset, eternal dawn and gloaming, on sea and continents and islands, each in its turn, as the round earth rolls." Let these poetic words sink into your consciousness and stew a while in your heart. They were written by John Muir (1838-1914), founder of the Sierra Club and an advocate of the preservation of wilderness through a national parks system. In this simple but sensuous tribute to the naturalist, children's writer and illustrator Thomas Locker treats us to some of the scenic splendors of California and Alaska. Muir was born in Scotland and raised in Wisconsin, but his soul came fully alive when he arrived in Yosemite, California. There the beauty of the meadows and the groves of ancient trees took his breath away, and he was never the same. Locker best conveys Muir's attitude of wonder in a painting of him standing on the limbs high up in a Douglas fir. What is he doing there? Trying to experience the full shock and glory of a storm. Muir loved the wildness in the wilderness, whether a storm in California or the dangerous ice in Alaska. The book includes an introduction by Dr. Edgar Wayburn, past president of the Sierra Club.

    79. Pacific Library - John Muir's Personal Book Collection
Evidence of muir s wide ranging interests are apparent. Works by thomas Carlyle,Edward Gibbon, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Ruskin, Robert Louis

John Muir's Personal Library Muir descendants have given over 700 books that belonged to John Muir to the University of the Pacific Library. This is approximately half of the books known to have been in the working library that Muir left to his daughters. A bibliography of the collection is available in Holt-Atherton Special Collections. Many of the books are housed in the ornate Victorian bookcases that had been in the "scribble den" of the Muir family home in Martinez and are now in the Holt-Atherton Reading Room (shown above). Some books found in the collection date from Muir's days as a schoolboy in Scotland. Others include family Bibles, textbooks from his days as a student at the University of Wisconsin, books given to him by his friends during his early travel years, and the numerous books he gathered once he settled into life as a family man in Martinez. Many volumes contain Muir's handwritten notes and annotations. Muir often indexed ideas and phrases on the end-papers of his books, indicating the page and a sentence or passage, marking the idea that had captured his attention. Thus, Muir himself has given the scholar a guide to the literary origins of many of his important ideas. Many of the volumes are inscribed by the authors to Muir and indicate the influence and friendships Muir had as a national figure among other nineteenth and early twentieth century leaders. Contained in the collection are numerous works of well-known authors, poets, scientists, philosophers, and historians. Evidence of Muir's wide ranging interests are apparent. Works by Thomas Carlyle, Edward Gibbon, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Ruskin, Robert Louis Stevenson, Henry David Thoreau, Walt Whitman, and William Wordsworth are included in the collection. Muir's quest for information about science, philosophy, and literature led him to such authors as George Elliot, Sidney Lanier, Arthur Schopenhauer, Louis Agassiz, Charles Darwin, John Fiske, Asa Gray, Thomas Huxley, and Alfred Wallace.
