The speech that Thomas Muir made at his trial in Edinburgh was considered such a wonderful piece of English that it was published as an English text to be used in English exams in schools of some States in America until 1860. In 1844 a monument was erected to him in Edinburgh. Next: Glasgow Weavers' strike, 1787

A special function from learning theory If we have only a finite sample of a text, then we will produce a code with some redundancy. In the study of the worst case we find a special function. Let b be a parameter 0.5 < b < 1. The function phi(z) = b - z ln(z) - z exp(-z) sum_k z^k/k! ln(k+b) with the sum running from k=0 to infinity is of interest. The infinite sum has some similarity with the exponential function that is compensated by the factor with the negative exponent. Is the asymptotics for z to infinity easily established? Can the infinite sum be modified such that its numerical evaluation becomes simpler? We wonder whether similar expressions are known to people who deal with special functions. Brian Muir Thomas Brian Muir is a founding member of L.A.'s Open Fist Theater Company. He acted in several mainstage productions in an effort to support his career as a longshoreman. In 1993 Brian gave up acting to pursue his dream of a longshore career full time. He was living a happy, successful life when his good friend and former college roommate, Michael Denney, asked him to take the role of Thomas in a movie he was making. After months of researching his feminine side he plunged himself headlong into the role, which ultimately led to him having a sex change operation. Brianna, as he is now known, has a list of television credits to his... uh, I mean her name. Those credits include Jerry Springer, Rikki Lake and the shoe girl on Transsexual Eye For The Transvestite Guy (don't laugh, knowing TV it's coming).

Thomas Muir, the son of a hop merchant, was born in Glasgow on 25th August 1765. He began attending Glasgow Grammar School in 1770 and at the age of ten was admitted to Glasgow University . Thomas Muir's parents were Calvinists and at their request he embarked upon the study of divinity. However, in 1782 he abandoned his studies for the Church and began attending the classes of John Millar, one of Britain's first sociologists. Millar was a republican and a supporter of parliamentary reform and had a profound influence on the development of Muir's political ideas.
In 1783 Thomas Muir became involved in a conflict with the Principal of Glasgow University when he organised a petition against the suspension of Professor John Anderson. As a result of his campaign to have Anderson reinstated, Muir was expelled from the university. With the help of Millar, Muir finished his studies at Edinburgh University and entered the Faculty of Advocates in 1787.

Investor Relations Letters Readers respond to reports of mistreated Iraq war vets. Plus: Were Lawrence Summers' comments justified? [Read "Behind the Walls of Ward 54," by Mark Benjamin.] Thank you so much for publicizing the (lack of) appropriate treatment for soldiers with PTSD at Walter Reed hospital. The Army's evading the issue by claiming that these soldiers' condition is not due to the trauma of war just sickens me. In 1974, my father-in-law, Charles Levy, published a book called "Spoils of War," about the struggles of Vietnam veterans, especially those who would now be diagnosed with PTSD. He also testified before the Senate about the issue and was attacked for criticizing the U.S. military by exposing its "dirty laundry." The United States was in deep denial about what an (unpopular) war could do to "our boys." We all know now the consequences suffered by Vietnam veterans because of this denial.
