About a century ago, Frank Morley proved a curious theorem about triangles which has become known in mathematical folklore as Morley's Miracle. The theorem states that: "The three points of intersection of the adjacent trisectors of the angles of any triangle form an equilateral triangle." Morley's Pursuit of Incidence
December 1998 Frank Morley will be remembered for a theorem (discussed in last month's column ) which he discovered before 1900 but did not enunciate, in print, until years later [Morley(1924, 1929)]. In a letter (August 1934) to Gino Loria [Loria], Morley wrote The exact source is F.Morley in Mathematical Association of Japan for Secondary Mathematics , Vol. 6, Dec. 1924. I mentioned the theorem also in "Extensions of Clifford's Chain Theorem", American Journal of Mathematics , Vol. 51, July 1929. I mentioned the theorem to friends in Cambridge, England, around 1904, but as it was a part of a theory I did not make a paper of it. Thus it became public, and the Japanese reference is not I think the first reference in print. For a short history of the theorem see [Oakley and Baker]. Early references did not mention Morley's name, and it appears that, as the theorem grew in popularity, Morley felt compelled to claim the authorship. But even then he could not bring himself to disassociate the theorem from the theory that led to it. His 1929's paper begins with the following paragraph I propose to state more fully what was implied in the final section of my paper "metric geometry of the plane n-line,"

    Public company disclosure requirements
The exercise of business judgment by corporate boards of directors
Mr. Morley received his JD in 1983 from Yale Law School and his BA, magna cum laude , in 1978 from Colgate University. He is admitted to the bar in the District of Columbia and the State of New York and is a member of Board of Advisors to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act Reporter

Caveat lector 9 May 2001 Our current howler (part II): Geisha guy Synopsis: Whenever it seems that Bush may have goofed, John Harris finds an upbeat explanation. Conflicting Image of Bush Emerges John Harris and Dan Balz, The Washington Post, THE PRESS TREATS BUSH TENDERLY Geneva Overholser, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, HANGIN' WITH HILLARY AND W IN D.C., Dave Zweifel, The Capital Times, in private. THE DAILY HOWLER, 5/8/01 ). Bush was a tiger in private, they said; a whirling master of all he surveyed. So Harris cheerfully transcribed their reports, and obligingly puzzled over the way that Bush often stumbled in public. (13) The subject was global warming, and Schroeder made plain that his government objected to Bush’s declaration that the United States no longer supported the Kyoto agreement aimed at limiting greenhouse gases. Rather than smoothing over the disagreement, one White House aide recounted, Bush challenged Schroeder, "Where are you going to get your energy in 20 years?" (14) Bush White House officials later said that from their vantage point the session had gone fine, with the president just speaking his mind directly. But German Embassy officials here reported to other European governments that the exchange had been uncomfortably sharp, diplomatic sources said.

Making the Bestseller List
Publishers and Publishing: A Case Study
Modern publishing history is a history of acquisitions and mergers. The publisher Doubleday exemplifies this, but its record also demonstrates that publishing good books is a viable long-term business strategy. Frank Nelson Doubleday started his career in publishing in 1876 as a fourteen-year-old apprentice at Scribner's. He eventually worked his way up to business manager for Scribner's Magazine and then to manager of the subscription department. Here, he began to offer customers sets of books in return for a year's subscription to the magazine, initiating this marketing strategy with the offer of a uniform set of Rudyard Kipling's novels (to date). In 1897, Doubleday left Scribner's and threw his lot in with McClure's Magazine, forming the publishing company of Doubleday and McClure. During its three-year existence, this partnership published Alfred Olivant's Bob, Son of Battle (1898), Rudyard Kipling's The Day's Work (1898), and Frank Norris'

MORLEY MSS.
The Morley mss., 1917-1924 and 1958, consist of letters from author Christopher Darlington Morley, 1890-1957, to Sir Sidney Colvin, 1845-1927. The letters discuss Morley's activities and family, his changes in journalistic positions, and events in the United States relating to America's entry into World War I. The last letter, written in 1924 just after Morley had joined the Saturday Review, mentions his meeting and association with author Joseph Conrad, 1857-1924. One letter, written sometime about 1920, is addressed to writer Charles Lewis Hind, 1862-1927, rather than to Colvin. A mimeographed copy of a talk delivered by Morley's younger brother, Frank Vigor Morley, 1899-1980, at Haverford College in 1958, completes the collection. Collection size: 8 items For more information about this collection and any related materials contact the Manuscripts Department, Lilly Library, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN 47405 Telephone: (812) 855-2452.

98. Divine Proportions
of writer Christopher morley and granddaughter of mathematician frank morley, Professor frank morley, first at Haverford and then at Johns Hopkins
http://www.brynmawr.edu/alumnae/bulletin/divinepr.htm
DIVINE PROPORTIONS
Louise Morley Cochrane '40 turns out to have inherited a taste for numbers as well as words. The daughter of writer Christopher Morley and granddaughter of mathematician Frank Morley, she majored in political science at Bryn Mawr and says that only Professor K. Laurence Stapleton coaxed her out of her fear of putting pen to paper. Moving to Great Britain after her marriage, she was an interviewer and broadcaster for the B.B.C., a writer of children's books and career novels for teen girls (including Anne in Electronics, 1960), a Fulbright commissioner, and chicken raising enthusiast. In her golden years, she became interested in the lay Benedictine, Adelard of Bath, who introduced Hindu/Arabic numerals and the concept of zero to the Western world. Her 1994 book, Adelard of Bath:The First English Scientist, was the first on the subject for the general reader in English. While traveling in the Middle East during the Crusades, Adelard obtained a manuscript of Euclid's Elements, which he translated from Arabic into Latin. Later, as a member of the court of Henry I, he collaborated on a translation of the Zij or Astronomical Tables of Al-Khwarismi, a 9th-century Arab astronomer and mathematician who gave his name to the words algorithm and algebra. Adelard's most important work, on the astrolabe, was written for the future Henry II whom he tutored as a boy of 12.

    Morley's Theorem
If you trisect the angles of a triangle (impossible with compasses and straightedge, as in Trisection Of An Angle ), they meet (as shown in the diagram) at three points which are the vertices of an equilateral triangle. This elegant result was not known to the ancient Greeks, and was discovered by Frank Morley in 1899. An interesting thing about this simple result is that it is rather difficult to prove. One of the interesting side results of some of the proofs is that the side of the equilateral triangle is equal to 8R sin(A/3) sin(B/3) sin(C/3) , where A, B, and C are the angles of the larger triangle, and R is the radius of the circumcircle ( The Centers of a Triangle See Wrong Triangle in my Puzzle pages.
