A collection of reminiscences of Mr. Morley-Fletcher
[Baren] Encyclopedia Editor's notes: I n the autumn of 1999, I received the following email: I'm so happy to see my great-uncle Frank's book on woodblock printing available on the internet. He died long before I was born, but one of my uncles who was living in California at the time cared for him in his old age and has many fond stories of him. Frank Morley-Fletcher was a distinguished artist and teacher in his day, but he died destitute and few people today have heard of him. Alan Best I of course replied immediately, and began a short correspondence that was to have an interesting result. Mr. Best provided me with this bare outline of some important dates in Mr. Fletcher's life:
  • born 25th April, 1866,
  • educated University College, Liverpool, and Paris
  • director of Edinburgh College of Art from 1908 to 1923
  • married 28th March, 1895 to Maud Evelyn (d. 28th July, 1949), daughter of Joseph Brown of Walberswick, Suffolk
  • director of Santa Barbara School of Art from 1923 to 1930
  • died in Ojai, California.

While it is certainly unusual and extremely interesting that Tashlin emerged from print cartooning and animation to make live-action features, it is not an all-purpose explanatory mechanism. In fact, his career has been oversimplified and misunderstood due largely to the ahistorical approach that most scholars have taken in discussing his work. Ahistorical, that is, in the sense that no one has yet situated Tashlin in any of the contexts which would allow us to better understand his style, and to move away from this monolithic approach.
For Tashlin is unusual in another way: unlike most of the other mid-century Hollywood directors who are generally granted auteur status, Tashlin worked in but one genre: comedy. His peers, such as Robert Aldrich, Richard Brooks, Nicholas Ray, Douglas Sirk, Howard Hawks, Billy Wilder and many others, hopped from genre to genre; indeed, this is one of the reasons they are generally considered

American writer who was a founder and editor (1924–1941) of Saturday Review and wrote prolifically, most notably popular novels. Encyclopedia Morley, Christopher, 1890–1957, American editor and author, b. Haverford, Pa., grad. Haverford College, 1910. He was a Rhodes scholar. Morley was one of the founders of the Saturday Review of Literature, of which he was an editor from 1924 to 1940. A prolific author, he wrote more than 50 books. His novels, generally in a light vein, include Parnassus on Wheels The Haunted Bookshop Thunder on the Left (1925), and Kitty Foyle (1939; filmed 1940). He also revised and enlarged Bartlett's Familiar Quotations Works Works by Christopher Morley Parnassus on Wheels . The New York author and journalist's first novel is a whimsical story of an itinerant bookseller. It attains popular success, as would its sequel, The Haunted Bookshop Where the Blue Begins . One of the humorist's more inventive fantasies is this satire, in which dogs are given human capacities and whose experiences provide commentary on modern life.

Background
Much of this collection concerns the life of Christopher Darlington Morley (1890-1957) who reached the pinnacle of his popularity as a writer in the 1930s and 1940s. Best known for his novel Kitty Foyle , he was, in fact, quintessentially versatile. Erudite and witty, he probed every literary genre and exhibited a style of substance and facility. Though he is perhaps best remembered as a novelist and literary columnist, he is also remembered as a dramatist, essayist, editor, especially in connection with the Book-of-the-Month Club, and anthologist of two editions of Bartlett's Quotations. Morley's poetry which he wrote in free verse and rhymed had a 17th century lilt to it. His Translations from the Chinese (1932) is considered some of his best poetry. Then again, his poetry was transduced into lyrics in collaboration with such song writers as Jerome Kern.

Morley's Theorem
About 1796, the nineteen year old Karl Gauss proved that certain regular polygons could be created with only the classic construction tools of straight edge and compass. Some forty years later, Wantzel completed this work by showing that only the regular polygons Gauss had described could be so constructed. As a consequence of this, it was finally proven that a general angle could not be trisected with straight edge and compass, thus ending the search for one of the classic problems of antiquity. H S M Coxeter has suggested that from this time on people felt uneasy about the mention of trisecting an angle. This, he thinks, probably contributed to the reason that Morley's Theorem was not discovered until near the dawning of the 20th century.
Simply stated, Morley's Theorem says that if the angles at the vertices of any triangle (A, B, and C in the figure) are trisected, then the points where the trisectors from adjacent vertices intersect (D, E, and F) will form an equilateral triangle.
Frank Morley was educated in England, and taught briefly there before he settled in the United States around 1887. He became a professor at the Quaker College in Haverford, Pennsylvania. He had a great fondness for Geometry and posing mathematical problems, publishing over fifty of his own. In 1899 he observed the relationship described above, but could find no proof. It spread from discussions with his friends to become an item of mathematical gossip. Finally in 1909 a trigonometric solution was discovered by M. Satyanarayana. Later an elementary proof was developed. Today the preferred proof is to begin with the result and work backward. Start with an equilateral triangle and show that the vertices are the intersection of the trisectors of a triangle with any given set of angles. For those interested in seeing the proof, check Coxeter's

Mount Shasta as a Visual Resource
Woodblock Artists:
Early 1900s
The period between 1915 and 1930 was one of continued innovation in the portrayal of Mount Shasta. The Plein Air artists, as discussed in a previous chapter, were at the forefront of creative enterprise. At the same time, however, there were other developments entering into the art scene. The technique of woodblock printing was one of these develpments and it resulted in some of the most striking images of the mountain ever made.
Frank Morley Fletcher (1866-1949)
In 1923 Frank Morley Fletcher left his position as director of the Edinburgh College of Art to come to America to be the first director of the newly formed Santa Barbara School of the Arts. Already fifty-seven years old, he brought with him an English tradition of woodblock printing of which he himself was the major exponent. Already by1916 he had encapsulated his experience in a successful book titled Woodblock Printing The Print Makers Society of California said of him: To say anything about English blockprints and omit mention of the leader in that country's movement would be impossible. Mr. Frank Morley Fletcher was the man who brought the blockprint in England to its high development, and all English workers trace directly to his influence.
