Colin Morley, a 52-year-old father from north London, was described as a genius in the world of advertising and marketing. He used his brilliant communication skills to try to help charities and businesses understand their brand and, on a wider scale, he tried to change the world of media and marketing into a force for social good. His latest project, called Be The Change, encourages people and organisations to find ways to improve ethically, socially, environmentally and personally. Bringing joy to other people was his aim, he once said. Our lives are forever changed, but we carry his positive spirit in us and will continue to spread his desire for peace and love in the world, and his wish to make the world a better place
Ros Morley And a glimpse at the Be The Change website (see internet links right), where 25,000 words of tributes have been posted, shows how Mr Morley's work and philosophy touched the lives of so many.

On September the 11th, 2001, America felt its vulnerability even to threats that gather on the other side of the earth. We resolved then, and we are resolved today, to confront every threat, from any source, that could bring sudden terror and suffering to America." "The attacks of September the 11th showed our country that vast oceans no longer protect us from danger. Before that tragic date, we had only hints of al Qaeda's plans and designs. Today in Iraq, we see a threat whose outlines are far more clearly defined, and whose consequences could be far more deadly. Saddam Hussein's actions have put us on notice, and there is no refuge from our responsibilities.
We did not ask for this present challenge, but we accept it. Like other generations of Americans, we will meet the responsibility of defending human liberty against violence and aggression. Frank Morley was born into a Quaker family. His mother was Elizabeth Muskett, and his father was Joseph Roberts Morley. Joseph ran a china shop in Woodbridge. Frank attended Seckford Grammar School in Woodbridge before he entered King's College, Cambridge, in 1879, having won an open scholarship. An important influence on his school career was Airy who Frank had met through their shared passion for chess. It was Airy 's encouragement which saw Frank compete for the scholarship. However ill health disrupted Morley's undergraduate course and he was forced to take an extra year because of these health problems. Morley only achieved the eighth place in the First Class Honours. To say 'only' here may seem strange since this was an extremely good result in an examination which saw Mathews first and Whitehead fourth. Richmond writes in [4], however:-

    Morley's Miracle
In 1899, almost a hundred years ago, Frank Morley , then professor of Mathematics at Haverford College, came across a result so surprising that it entered mathematical folklore under the name of Morley's Miracle . Morley's marvelous theorem states that The three points of intersection of the adjacent trisectors of the angles of any triangle form an equilateral triangle. The applet below serves to demonstrate that, indeed, whatever the shape of the given triangle, the Morley triangle is always equilateral. Morley's original proof stemmed from his results on algebraic curves tangent to a given number of lines. As usual in mathematics, numerous attempts have been made to find a simple, elementary proof that could match the level of knowledge and proficiency required to grasp the statement of the theorem. The simplest proofs proceed backwards starting with an equilateral triangle. They differ in subsequent steps. Most such proofs highlight some additional features of the configuration but complicate matters unnecessarily as a few most trivial proofs convincingly demonstrate. Before giving several backward proofs, here is a direct one which, while logically absolutely transparent, requires some high school trigonometry.

    On Motivation and Understanding
February 1999 This is the fourth in the series of columns (see links at the bottom of the page) devoted to Frank Morley's work. It's time to deal with what amounts to his proof of the Trisector Theorem. I'll outline Morley's reasoning first and then supply necessary details The second section of Morley's [1929] paper begins with the following paragraph: A three-line has four inscribed circles. Their centers are the incenters of the three-line. We ask then for the curves C n which touch n +1 given lines, and more particularly for their centers. These centers we call the incenters of the (n +1)-line. For a 3-line there exist 4 circles that touch all three lines. For a 4-line there are 8 cardioids that touch all 4 lines. Increasing the number of cusps, curves are produced that touch all n +1 lines for greater n's. Morley first found a general formula for the incenters in terms of the reflections of the origin in each of the lines. By letting one of the lines vary, he got the locus of incenters of the curves that touch the remaining n lines.

One of the most sparkling gems in all of elementary geometry is Morley's Theorem: The three intersections of the trisectors of the angles of a triangle, lying near the three sides respectively, form an equilateral triangle. If the reference triangle is labeled ABC, then the equilateral triangle is called the Morley triangle of ABC. Closely related are other Morley triangles and Morley centers. Born in Woodbridge, Suffolk, England, Morley received the Sc.D. degree from Cambridge University. He moved to Pennsylvania in 1887 and taught at Haverford College until 1900, when he became chairman of the mathematics department at Johns Hopkins University. The pencil portrait of Morley seen here is used by permission of the estate of Felix M. Morley. (Felix Morley, son of Frank and Lilian Morley, was editor of the Washington Post (1933-1940), won a Pulitzer Prize (1936), and was President of Haverford College (1940-1945).) In 1900, Morley's Theorem first appeared in the literature as a special case of a theorem in the first issue of Transactions of the American Mathematical Society . For an impressive summary of related results and a list of 116 references, see

    1ST AND 2ND MORLEY CENTERS
The famous Morley Theorem states that the three points of intersection of the adjacent trisectors of the angles of a triangle ABC form an equilateral triangle. In 1967, Peter Yff proved that the center of the Morley triangle, called the 1st Morley center, is given by trilinear coordinates cos(A/3) + 2 cos(B/3) cos(C/3) :
    cos(B/3) + 2 cos(C/3) cos(A/3) :
    cos(C/3) + 2 cos(A/3) cos(B/3).
While studying the 1st Morley Center, Peter Yff proved that the Morley equilateral triangle is perspective to triangle ABC, and that the center of perspective, or 2nd Morley center, has remarkably simple trilinears: sec(A/3) : sec(B/3) : sec(C/3) For an introduction to the Morley triangles and 150 further references on these remarkable objects, see Cletus O. In the original sense of fugitive, it is an unseemly adjective for the title of this important political study, There was certainly nothing of the runaway either in Frank Chodorov or in anything he ever wrote. Only in the derived meaning of "scattered" or "occasional" is fugitive applicable.
Frank Chodorov (1887-19661 was of that type of journalist who will never subordinate talent to ordinary reporting. Like Henry L. Mencken in this respect, he took from the stream of circumstance only what interested him, commenting thereon without fear or favor. Mencken had the force to dominate a big metropolitan newspaper and thus assured his caustic line on politics relative immortality. Chodorov was the better historian and philosopher but published for the most part in offbeat media with little circulation. This LibertyPress reprint should help to redress the post-mortem balance in his favor.
Hanighen. on the other hand, believed that it would be both justifiable and and profitable to swing Human Events into a clearly anti-Soviet orbit, even though this meant more "entangling alliances," militarization, and centralization of government, which we had heretofore opposed. Argument against steering a collision course with Russia was met with the "soft on Communism" rebuttal. In retrospect I see this as the first premonitory break in what had been a united and fundamentally isolationist Conservative front. This "New Right" seemed to me, and very much to Chodorov, to lean in the direction of National Socialism and away from the restoration of the balanced Federal Republic to which we both aspired. Goering's "guns versus butter" issue was up again.

    Felix Morley:
The Journalist Philosopher Oscar B. Johannsen [reprinted from Fragments , July-December 1985] England's three Bronte sisters' literary talents are matched by America's three Morley brothers' writing aptitudes. Christopher Morley, the oldest and the most famous of the three brothers, was a romantic novelist; Felix, the middle one, was a journalist; Frank, the youngest, was a mathematician whose literary attainments did not suffer by comparison with his brothers'. Among their many accomplishments is the fact that they are the only three brothers in America who obtained Rhodes Scholarships.
The trio's parents were cultured and intelligent expatriates. Their father, Professor Frank Morley, a Quaker and mathematician of note, had emigrated to America to teach at Haverford College. Their mother, who had come to America with their father, was an excellent violinist. Her musical talent was evidence of her artistic taste, which happily included literary skill that was passed on to her children.
Today's generation is probably better acquainted with the Bronte sisters than with the Morley brothers. This is regrettable, for an understanding of their work cannot help but give a better perspective on life, not only of its problems but possibly some of its answers.

January 1999 This is the third column that draws on Frank Morley's fundamental paper On the Metric Geometry of the Plane n-Line . The first one dealt with a few later proofs of his Trisector Theorem . The second presented a background for his work and demonstrated several of his other results. My initial intention for the third column was to expose the simplicity of and the motivation behind Morley's original proof of his famous theorem. (Given the controversy surrounding the theorem and its proofs, I, belatedly, applied myself to a careful reading of Morley's papers. Well, better later than never. The effort paid off handsomely and the experience was absolutely gratifying.) Meanwhile, searching newsgroups archives at the Math Forum , I came across a lovely discussion that began some time in March 1998. After reading a curious remark by one of the participants - a teacher - I felt like giving additional exposure to Morley's work might not be very much out of line. The paper and the rest of his work are really replete with wonderful geometric results. I'll talk of Morley's original proof of the Trisector Theorem in the next column.

    Doodling and Miracles
November 1998 Almost 100 years ago, Frank Morley proved a curious theorem from elementary geometry that unbelievably remained unknown until 1899. With time, the theorem became known in mathematical folklore as Morley's Miracle Morley's Trisector Theorem is a more mundane term.) The theorem states that The three points of intersection of the adjacent trisectors of the angles of any triangle form an equilateral triangle. Frank V. Morley, the youngest of Morley sons, recollects [Oakley and Baker] I was a school-boy when my father, who was almost forty years older than I was, sketched for me, free-hand, a pencilled diagram of the simplest form of the above-discussed theorem in plane geometry. I tested it once with my own drawing instruments. No matter what shape of the original triangle I started with, there in its midriff was an equilateral triangle, picked out by the trisectors. It was wizard, it was weird - and it was True! (Personally, drawing by hand, I have never succeeded to get anything that remotely resembled a polygon, let alone an equilateral triangle. If you like me, the applet below will save you from frustration you may experience watching irregular shapes emerge on paper all your efforts notwithstanding - the vertices of the triangle are draggable.)

December 28, 1996, marks the thirtieth anniversary of the death of Frank Chodorov, one of the giants of the American Old Right. It seems appropriate to look back at his life and career, not only to pay homage, but also to rediscover some of the fundamental insights he brought to the fore in his many books, articles, and speeches. Frank Chodorov had a profound influence on the postwar American Right. Murray N. Rothbard, William F. Buckley Jr., James J. Martin, and many other exponents of the free market have cited Chodorov's work as vital to the formation of their worldviews. Indeed, Buckley once said, "It is quite unlikely that I should have pursued a career as a writer but for the encouragement he gave me just after I graduated from Yale." Born in New York City in 1887, Chodorov graduated from Columbia University in 1907, and spent the next 30 years working in a variety of jobs, including a stint as an advertising representative and running a clothing factory. "From four to seven years was about all I could take of any occupation throughout my life. I went at each job I undertook with verve, mastered it and when it became routine I lost interest and went looking for something else," Chodorov wrote in his 1962 autobiography, Out of Step.
