Japanese mathematician who was awarded the Fields Medal in 1990 for his work in algebraic geometry. Mori attended Kyoto University (B.A., 1973; M.A., 1975; Ph.D., 1978) and held an appointment there until 1980, when he went to Nagoya University. In 1990 he joined the faculty of the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences at Kyoto.

Shigefumi Mori Mori Shigefumi , born February 23 ) is a Japanese mathematician , known for his work in algebraic geometry , particularly in relation to the classification of threefolds , which is nowadays called as the Mori program among some mathematicians specialized in algebraic geometry He generalized the classical approach to the classification of algebraic surfaces to the classification of algebraic three folds .
