Historique

Augustus de Morgan British logician and mathematician. Boole and he invented symbolic logic, i.e. logic expressed in terms of algebraic operations. In addition, he was a powerful advocate of the Laplacian method of inverse probability in the Britain; thus his work on probability theory and his analysis of scientific inference by means of probability theory are also important. His name is associated with various miscellaneous problems. One of them is the famous "Four Color Problem": four colors are sufficient for distinguishing each area from any adjacent area by a different color from each other, on any map (this is a sloppy formulation, but a precise one can be given!). One day in October 1852, a student asked de Morgan whether this problem can be solved, and de Morgan in turn asked William Rowan Hamilton, a boss mathematician of the day in the Britain. Thus a long struggle with this problem began, and it was solved by K. Appel and W. Haken in 1976, by employing large computers at the University of Illinois.

Executive summary: De Morgan's Laws English mathematician and logician, was born in June 1806, at Madura, in the Madras presidency. His father, Colonel John De Morgan, was employed in the East India Company's service, and his grandfather and great-grandfather had served under Warren Hastings . On the mother's side he was descended from James Dodson, F.R.S., author of the Anti-logarithmic Canon and other mathematical works of merit, and a friend of Abraham de Moivre . Seven months after the birth of Augustus, Colonel De Morgan brought his wife, daughter and infant son to England, where he left them during a subsequent period of service in India, dying in 1816 on his way home. Augustus De Morgan received his early education in several private schools, and before the age of fourteen years had learned Latin, Greek and some Hebrew, in addition to acquiring much general knowledge. At the age of sixteen years and a half he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, and studied mathematics, partly under the tuition of

The Traditional Square of Opposition
This entry traces the historical development of the Square of Opposition, a collection of logical relationships traditionally embodied in a square diagram. This body of doctrine provided a foundation for work in logic for over two millenia. For most of this history, logicians assumed that negative particular propositions ("Some S is not P") are vacuously true if their subjects are empty. This validates the logical laws embodied in the diagram, and preserves the doctrine against modern criticisms. Certain additional principles ("contraposition" and "obversion") were sometimes adopted along with the Square, and they genuinely yielded inconsistency. By the nineteenth century an inconsistent set of doctrines was widely adopted. Strawson's 1952 attempt to rehabilitate the Square does not apply to the traditional doctrine; it does salvage the nineteenth century version but at the cost of yielding inferences that lead from truth to falsity when strung together.

Sir W. R. Hamilton
By Augustus De Morgan
An obituary published in the Gentleman's Magazine and Historical Review , vol. I. (new series) (1866), pp. 128-134. Sept. 2, 1865. At Dublin, aged 60, Sir William Rowan Hamilton, Astronomer-Royal for Ireland. An old article in a review , written on the subject of this memoir, reminds its readers that each of the three kingdoms has its Sir William Hamilton. The Englishman was noted for his patronage of art; the Scotchman was among the first in philosophy; and the Irishman was among the first in mathematics. In this race it is clear that England, if placed at all, comes in a bad third. Her representative is sufficiently described in the view quoted, as ``holding a distinguished place among the virtuosos of his time.'' But Scotland and Ireland have added each a great man to the rolls of fame, and each honours the memory of one of those who make lasting marks upon the subjects which they studied. Those subjects are so different that no comparison can be made. William Rowan Hamilton belonged to a branch of the Scotch family, which settled in the North of Ireland in the time of James I. He was born August 4, 1805

Researchers Augustus de Morgan FAMOUS BRITISH mathematician, for many years Professor of Mathematics at University College, London, for eighteen years secretary to the royal Astronomical Society, author of standard works on Formal Logic. The Different Calculus , and the Theory of Probabilities
One of the first British scientists who investigated the phenomena of spiritualism and became convinced of their genuine occurrence. "I am perfectly convinced", said De Morgan in the Preface of his wife's book From Matter to Spirit , "that I have both seen and heard, in a manner which should make unbelief impossible, things called spiritual which cannot be taken by a rational being to be capable of explanation by imposture, coincidence or mistake." In the same year of 1863 he published his work Mind and declared not only that the facts of supernormal occurrences were uncontestable, but he also believed that the hypothesis that explains the facts by intelligence exterior to ourselves is the only satisfactory one.
