Dancer by Mike Cox Part of a formation known as the Riley Mountains, Dancer Peak rises about 600 feet above nearby State Highway 71 eight miles southeast of Llano On a topographic map, the prominence is shown as being 1,714 feet above sea level. But the map does not tell the story behind the name. Born in Tennessee on Dec. 11, 1803, Jonas Franklin Dancer came to Texas with his wife and three children at some point in the 1840s. The 1850 U.S. Census shows him living in Travis County, running a mill on Bull Creek, a stream which fed into the Colorado River. Around 1852, after a flood destroyed his mill, Dancer took his family to the northwest of Austin into what was then the far northern corner of Gillespie County. He settled on Honey Creek, a stream that began at the base of the peak that would one day bear his name. “The spot selected by Mr. Dancer was one of the most picturesque in the county,” one 19th century writer later observed. “Here game of all kinds and wild honey abounded in the greatest quantity.”

English attack on the Longitude Problem
Previous topic Next topic History Topics Index
The early history of the longitude problem is discussed in our article Longitude and the Académie Royale . The present article discusses the attack on the longitude problem in England which began around the middle of the 17th century. Groups of scientists began meeting in London and Oxford from 1645 and certainly the longitude problem was one of the main problems which they discussed. A poem written in 1661 described the work going on at Gresham College (see [6]):- The Colledge will the whole world measure,
Which most impossible conclude,
And Navigators make a pleasure
By finding out the longitude.
Every Tarpalling shall then with ease
Sayle any ships to th'Antipodes. Tarpalling
is old spelling for tarpaulin which, in addition to its meaning as a piece of material used for protecting exposed objects, means a sailor In 1662 the group from Gresham College, which included John Wilkins , John Wallis and Robert Hooke , and other groups of scientists, became the Royal Society of London for the Promotion of Natural Knowledge . The Royal Society was granted its charter by Charles II and another member of the Gresham College group, Christopher

Palms Up for Michael Moore, Thumbs Down for Bush
In a very political festival, “Fahrenheit 9/11” takes Cannes’ top prize By MARY CORLISS/CANNES

He won’t be welcome at the Republican National Convention this summer. Even some Democrats are made nervous by his cheerfully inflammatory rhetoric. But last night, at world’s largest annual get-together, Michael Moore could have been nominated, and elected, President for Life. Moore’s documentary “Fahrenheit 9/11,” a passionate, well-constructed indictment of the Bush Administration’s foreign and domestic policies, won the Palme d’Or, or top prize, at the 57th Cannes Film Festival. When the award was announced, the huge crowd erupted in cheers and applause. As he mounted the stage, this self-described outsider seemed nonplussed by his new status as Minister of Film Information. In mock outrage he turned to Quentin Tarantino, the President of the Cannes Jury, to demand, “What have you done?” and “You just did this to mess me up.” The entire ceremony had the theme of a “Fahrenheit” love-fest. The evening’s first winner, Short Film runner-up Jonas Geirnaert, had a message about Moore for viewers of the Independent Film Channel back in the States, which was broadcasting the show: “In case he shouldn’t win, if anyone is watching this from the United States, please don’t vote Bush.” Then Tim Roth, announcing another prize, declared, “I’d like to compliment the young man for his comments, which I thought were extraordinarily brave.”

East Fen Common Qua Fen Common Angle Common South Horse Fen Soham has to its credit three commons which are unique to the town and derived from strip farming methods and land rights that go back to the medieval period. The Commons and Horse Fens are not known to exist, in quite the same way as they do in Soham, anywhere else in the country. They are protected by law and are not allowed to have developments built on them. Decree of the Court of Exchequer 1686 An important event in the history of Soham was the Decree of the Court of Exchequer made in the Easter Term of 1686. This followed a dispute over commons and involved the Lord of the Manor of the time, Sir Thomas Chicheley. It runs to 19 pages and is quite a complicated document but, since it has such a bearing on the subsequent history of Soham, it is as well that we try to understand it. 1628 AD Sir Robert Heath was ordered to set aside Common Land at Soham (1) In 1628 Sir Robert Heath, the then Lord of the Manor, exhibited a bill against some of the tenants of the Manor, saying that they had surcharged the common with cattle, and the purpose of the bill was to see that everyone had their fair share of the 9400 acres of marsh and fen grounds which lay waste and common. 1500 acres in Metlam Fen and 500 acres in Barroway Fen were subsequently enclosed and handed down via his descendants to Sir Thomas Chicheley. 420 acres (of the 1500) were later taken by the drainage undertakers and the tenants threw down the enclosures.

Before There Were Two Cultures William Newman Ingenious Pursuits: Building the Scientific Revolution . Lisa Jardine. xx + 444 pp. Doubleday, 1999. $35.00. The birth of modern science in the 17th century has often been presented as a lonely affair. The image of Isaac Newton alone in his alchemical laboratory at Cambridge comes to mind, as do the strange dreams of Descartes's early Olympica , which resulted from his forced meditations in an overheated room in the midst of a military campaign. Ingenious Pursuits attempts to present the other side of the coin. By focusing on areas of cooperative enterprise, such as natural history, cartography and astronomy, Lisa Jardine presents a picture of 17th-century science that stresses the interactions between and joint activities of individuals and groups of researchers in national and international settings. Her goal is to show that such cooperation extends beyond the obvious fact that those in the same field often work together. Indeed, her major points are that the seemingly disparate realms of science and the fine arts are in reality interdependent and that today, as in the 17th century, the boundaries that we draw around these endeavors are in large measure illusory.
