2003 Graduate Teaching Awards in the Professional Schools: Bob Michael, the Eliakim Hastings Moore Distinguished Service Professor in the Irving B. Harris Graduate School of Public Policy Studies
      By Peter Schuler
      News Office
      Bob Michael
"It really is a joy," said Robert Michael, describing the process of teaching Harris School students. Michael, the Eliakim Hastings Moore Distinguished Service Professor in the Irving B. Harris Graduate School of Public Policy Studies and its former Dean, has been named Professor of the Year for teaching in non-Core courses. "We have a culture in this school that cares deeply about teaching," Michael said. "In other places, you usually don't have people sitting around at lunchtime working on strategies to improve their teaching, but that's what we have here." This year, for the first time in a highly productive 30-year career, most of it spent at Chicago, Michael was freed of major administrative and research responsibilities to teach a full course load that included the Economics of Child and Family Policy and Poverty and the Economics of Education. He also directed the Civic Internship and McCormick Tribune Leadership Fellows programs. Michael is an internationally recognized scholar on family economics. In 1994, he helped oversee the first scientific study of U.S. sexual practices, resulting in landmark books co-authored with Edward Laumann, the George Herbert Mead Distinguished Service Professor in Sociology and the College.

The purpose of this article is to examine briefly the nature and consequences of an early twentieth-century program to reorient the American mathematical curriculum, led by mathematician Eliakim Hastings Moore (1862-1932) of the University of Chicago. Moore's efforts, I conclude, were not ultimately very successful, and the reasons for this failure are worth pondering. Like William Mueller's recent article [16], which draws attention to the spirited debates regarding American mathematics education at the end of the nineteenth century, the present article may remind some readers of more recent educational controversies. I don't discourage such thinking, but caution that the lessons of history are not likely to be simple ones.

    A Static Mathematics Curriculum
    Is Unhealthy!
by Johnny W. Lott NCTM's Principles and Standards for School Mathematics provides guidance for revisions to curriculum that go beyond those suggested by NCTM's 1989 Standards . Calls for reform and change in the school mathematics curriculum are not a new phenomenon. Throughout the past century, the message has been that a static mathematics curriculum is unhealthy.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, E. H. Moore in his 1902 valedictory address as president of the American Mathematical Society characterized both the school and the college curriculum as in need of change. His picture of mathematics included integration, manipulatives, group learning, and technology. Moore recognized the need for change because he saw a curriculum steeped in the algorithms of arithmetic as unconnected to the real world and not designed to be studied by all.
Throughout the ensuing decades, similar messages calling for change echoed the underlying premise that including theory in the curriculum would greatly increase both mathematics skills and understanding. In the last decade of the twentieth century, the NCTM

Last revision: July 28, 2005 F DISTRIBUTION. The F distribution was tabulated - and the letter introduced - by G. W. Snedecor Calculation and Interpretation of Analysis of Variance and Covariance (1934). (David, 1995). It is sometimes called Snedecor's F distribution although the letter was chosen to honor Fisher. Fisher's original development of the analysis of variance (see the entry variance.) was not based on F but on a related quantity z. (see the entry z and the z distribution.) The term F distribution is found in Leo A. Aroian, "A study of R. A. Fisher's z distribution and the related F distribution," Ann. Math. Statist. FACTOR (noun). Fibonacci (1202) used factus ex multiplicatione (Smith vol. 2, page 105). Factor appears in English in 1673 in Elements of Algebra by John Kersey: "The Quantities given to be multiplied one by the other are called Factors." FACTOR (verb) appears in English in 1848 in Algebra by J. Ray: "The principal use of factoring, is to shorten the work, and simplify the results of algebraic operations." Factorize (spelled "factorise") is found in 1886 in Algebra by G. Chrystal (OED2).
