Gaspard Monge O revolucionário projectista do exército de Napoleão Para resolver problemas da engenharia militar, o francês Gaspard Monge desenvolveu a geometria descritiva (Carmen Kawano) No final do século 18, o Exército Francês era o único que dispunha de métodos de cálculo para determinar as melhores posições para escapar do fogo da artilharia inimiga. Para fugir dos complicados cálculos usualmente empregados nesse e em outros problemas da engenharia militar, o matemático Gaspard Monge (1746-1818) desenvolveu uma técnica tão simples que não recebeu atenção dos superiores. Assim começou a geometria descritiva, que hoje se aplica não só a desenhos ou projectos técnicos, mas também nas artes e na fotografia. Ainda adolescente, após fazer um mapa elogiado por especialistas, Monge foi incentivado a ingressar na escola militar, onde desenvolveu sua técnica para representar no papel as manobras militares, de tal forma que nada ficasse sob a mira do inimigo. Ao perceberem a genialidade e a importância bélica do novo método, os militares o mantiveram em segredo por 15 anos. Só era permitido ensiná-lo aos futuros engenheiros militares. Somente em 1794, em plena Revolução Francesa, Monge pôde divulgar sua invenção em escolas civis de Paris. A ideia da geometria descritiva é notável e elegante pela simplicidade. Basicamente é a representação ou projecção (perspectiva) de sólidos e figuras tridimensionais sobre um plano. Por esse método, uma figura é projectada inicialmente em um plano vertical, em rectas perpendiculares a ele e em um plano horizontal (veja ilustração à direita).
