August Ferdinand Mobius
The German mathematician and astronomer August Ferdinand Mobius is best known for his work in topology, expecially for his conception of the one-sided figure now known as the Mobius strip. He became professor of astronomy and higher mechanics at the University of Leipzig in 1816 and director of its observatory in 1848. Mobius's mathematical publications, although not always original, were effective and clear presentations. His 1827 work on analytical geometry became a classic. Mobius also wrote on celestial mechanics. The Journey of Mobius and Sidh

Question
What is the Mobius Strip? Asked by: Kartikeya Shah Answer Very roughly a surface is orientable if it has two sides so that, for example, is it possible to paint it with two different colours. A sheet of paper or the surface of a sphere are examples of orientable surfaces. A Mobius strip is a non-orientable surface: you can build one with a strip of paper (twist the strip and glue end together to form a ring) and verify that it has only one side: it is not possible to paint it with two colours. In short a Mobius strip only has one side and one edge. Ants would be able to walk on the Mobius strip on a single surface indefinitely since there is no edge in the direction of their movement. Just like what M.C. Escher depicted in his famous picture (shown on the right.) Mobius strip was named after the astronomer and mathematician August Ferdinand M¶bius (1790-1868). He came up with his 'strip' in September 1858. Independently, German mathematician Johann Benedict Listing (1808-1882) devised the same object in July 1858. Perhaps we should be talking about the Listing strip instead of the Mobius strip. August Ferdinand Möbius was born on November 17, 1790 in Schulpforta, Germany. (Then called Saxony.) He was the only child of Johann Heinrich Mobius, a dancing teacher. She was related to the famous Martin Luther, the man responsible for writing the document known as the 96 Thesis. Möbius himself was home schooled until he was thirteen. Showing an avid interest in mathematics, he went to college in Schulpforta, Germany in 1803.
When Möbius graduated from college in 1809 he became a student at the university of Leipzig. Here he started to study law against the will of his family. However, halfway through his first year he realized that law did not fit his interests. He then switched to the study of mathematics, physics, and astronomy.
During his time in college, some well-known mathematicians and astronomers influenced Möbius. It is said that his greatest influence was that of Karl Mollweide, his astronomy teacher. Mollweide is known for the trigonometric relations he discovered in 1807.

Pen or Pencil Where inside and outside are one and the same Think you've seen it all. Just when you thought you understand the simple little concepts like up and down, forwards and backwards, and inside and outside, Reeko comes along and throws a curve ball at ya'.
  • Cut a 2 inch strip of paper. Holding the strip out straight, give it a half twist (180 degrees) and attach the two ends together. Take a pen and draw a line along the center of the strip.
  • Surprised? Where do you end up? Is the line drawn on the inside or outside of the paper? Now cut the strip along the line you drew. How many chains do you get? Your chain is called a Mobius strip, which is a shape described by a science called topology. When you twisted your strip, the inside and outside became one continuous surface. And when you cut the strip, it became one longer chain but still had only one continuous surface. Now, try the experiment again but this time give the paper a full twist. You'll be surprised by the results. Parent's Note . During the early 1800's, the works of German mathematician August Ferdinand Mobius helped develop a study in geometry that became known as topology. Topology explores the properties of a geometrical figure that do not change when the figure is bent or stretched. sides. The Mobius strip is named after August F. Why the NCWIT Board Chair is a Man
for the past year. I recently wrote an article The most common question I've received over the past year, regarding the (NCWIT), is "why is the board chair a man?" I've been a feminist for as long as I can remember. My training has been furthered by my wife Amy , a Wellesley graduate, writer, and feminist; and my mother Cecelia Then I met Lucy Sanders , the CEO of NCWIT. Lucy is a nerd, so we connected immediately. During her career, she worked her way up from an entry level programming job to the CTO position at a major telecommunications company (Avaya.) In our first conversation, she spoke eloquently about the issues facing women in information technology and computer science. At that moment, I started thinking about the issue in a different way. I immediately thought back to my first company, where our goal was to hire the best possible people we could find. Logically, the gender balance should be roughly 50/50 in the IT business since the skills for IT, computer science, and programming, in my opinion, don't have any real gender linkages. But all you have to do is look around any IT organization to know the gender split is anything but 50/50.

August Mobius was born on this day in 1790. Someone once welded me a Mobius band. It was a nice present and I don't understand how I could have lost it, so I probably gave it away. In case you don't know what a Mobius band is, here's how to make one. Cut a strip of paper and fasten the two ends together, but first take one half twist. These pictures were taken from
John Robinson and Ronnie Brown -

    Making the Mobius Band
The man who welded me the Mobius band told me to pretend I was a fly and to start walking along the band. I walked my fingers around and around, AND AROUND AND AROUND!!! Why, it never ended! There was no end to a Mobius band. That is the amazing thing about them: they are one-sided, one-edged surfaces! How can you make something with two sides and two edges into something with one side and one edge and do nothing to reduce its size? It sounds impossible. I love Mobius bands. Incidentally, some people refer to them as Mobius strips. Same same.
