http://www.teddymuseum.com/famous_bears.htm
Winnie the Pooh First published on October 14 th 1926 Winnie the Pooh is arguably the best known bear in the world. Winnie the Pooh started life as a real teddy bear, bought at the famous London store Harrods in 1921 by Dorothy Milne for her son Christopher Robin’s first birthday. The bear was almost certainly made by the manufacturers J.K. Farnell who were making bears exclusively for Harrods at the time. Pooh’s original name was Edward Bear. He first appeared in an anthology of poetry written for children, When We Were Very Young ; by Christopher Robins father A.A. Milne. Edward Bears name was later changed to Winnie the Pooh. The name Winnie came from an American black bear in London Zoo, the mascot of a Canadian regiment from Winnipeg; Pooh was the name of Christopher Robin’s favorite swan. In 1925 the Milne’s moved from their London home to Cotchford Farm in Sussex, close to Ashdown Forest. The area became the setting for the now famous stories and is still visited today by thousands of Pooh fans every year. Paddington Created by Michael Bond, Paddington Bear was based on a teddy bear Bond purchased for his wife from the London department store Selfidges in 1956.

    http://www.travelafricamag.com/content/view/145/56/
The premier resource for all things African Madagascar: Amazing Wildlife (Part 2) Issue 17 Second part in our extensive look at Madagascar's diverse wildlife. Mention Madagascar to anyone and invariably one thing leaps to mind - lemurs. But how many different species could most people name? Many are probably familiar with the Ring-tailed lemur (practically Madagascar's unofficial emblem) or the Black and white ruffed lemur, and some might have heard of the singing Indri or dancing Verreaux's sifaka, but would you believe there are actually 54 different varieties of lemur on this early branch of the primate family tree? What's more, they became isolated on their island home many millions of years ago, and today do not occur naturally anywhere other than Madagascar. Rather perversely, this island ark is just as remarkable for mammal species that do not occur, as those that do. Given its proximity to mainland Africa, the obvious assumption would be that Madagascar contains simply an impoverished version of the vast diversity of mammals from the mainland. Nothing could be further from the truth - there are no herds of herbivores, no feline or canine carnivores waiting in ambush and no smaller species like weasels, rabbits or hares. In fact, only five major mammal groups found their way to Madagascar: bats, rodents, tenrecs, civet-like carnivores and mongooses, and the lemurs. Around 160 million years ago, a large chunk of land was wrenched away from what is now Somalia. This fragment drifted south-eastwards, eventually coming to rest 120 million years ago, 350km off Mozambique. Some 40 million years later it split in two: one piece moved northwards to collide with Asia and become India, while the second remained stationary and became Madagascar.

"To monitor proposals in and around Milne Conservation area to ensure that the area remains a viable natural park, where wildlife and the general public can co-exist.
To take whatever steps necessary to challenge any development proposal that would negatively impact the water quality in Milne Park or change the use of the area".
Milne Park Conservation Area The history of the land, which has now become Milne Park, is recorded from February 1806 in land deeds. On February 20th of that year, Nicholas Miller purchased Lot 9, Concession 7, in Markham Township from a Daniel Cozens who had received the land from the Crown. The 200 acres changed hands for 100 British pounds. Miller, one of the earliest recorded settlers in the area, had already been granted Lot 34, Concession 1, upon his arrival in the Township in 1793, but chose to construct his saw and grist mill on the Rouge River site, largely because of the availability of water power.
The property was divided into several parts and passed to several owners until May 10, 1824, when Peter and Alexander Milne purchased it for 450 British pounds. The mill, close to the present site of the Milne Dam, was operated first by Alexander, who oversaw the operation until his marriage, and then by a series of hired millers. Alexander built his own mill where Edward's Gardens is now located, in Toronto.

"To the uneducated, an A is just three sticks." - Eeyore
"You can't help respecting anybody who can spell Tuesday, even if he doesn't spell it right." - Rabbit A A Milne was a wonderful writer. His style was really quite simple ... no long words .... just careful use of those words AND of punctuation. Click on each of the small pictures for some examples of way that he wrote.
Do you think that the bees would notice Pooh when he tried to steal their honey? Try reading aloud this piece about Pooh Sticks ... pause every time you come to a comma ... A 'Blusterous Day' has only one long sentence. What makes this sentence easier to read? But why do you think Pooh was wedged in great tightness? Why hasn't Pooh got any idea what Owl is talking about? What kind of punctuation does AA Milne use to help us read this passage correctly Pooh Bear was also a GREAT POET. AA Milne called the poems that Pooh knew .. Hums

    Milne cosmology
Why I keep talking about it
  • Introduction How necessary is general relativity? Infinity in a bubble Astronomers ... Milne's legacy
  • No, not the Hundred Acre Wood. I mention the Milne model pretty frequently on sci.physics.research when people get confused about cosmological theories. It's gotten to the point that its official name there is now "that Milne model that Matt McIrvin likes to talk about." I shall explain why. (Someday this should have more external links and suggestions for additional reading. For now I'll mention a major source of inspiration: Edward Harrison's classic textbook Cosmology: The Science of the Universe. The early and mid-20th century British astrophysicist Edward Arthur Milne considered his cosmological theory a serious threat to general relativity (which he tried to replace with something he called "kinematic relativity"). In hindsight, the Milne cosmology is no real challenger to modern general-relativistic cosmology, but it is an enlightening "toy model" of Big Bang ideas about the universe. Thinking about it seems to clarify many issues of what is meant by expanding space, the true role of gravity in cosmology, and the significance of the "cosmic time" coordinates of cosmological models. Historically it was the starting point for much work on the role of symmetry in cosmology, and it is illuminating in that regard as well.
