Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. FOR NEARLY TWO weeks, Pete Oxford and Rene Bish had hiked Madagascar's Marojejy National Park searching for the silky sifaka, a rare, all- white primate. Undaunted by rugged rain-forest terrain and the bloated leeches that clung to their legs, the photographers nonetheless grew discouraged as day after day they failed to locate their quarry. "Finally, on our twelfth day in the forest, I heard a dull thud behind me," remembers Oxford. "I turned slowly as the ghostlike sifaka leapt onto a nearby branch to inspect us. The terrain was slippery and steep, and the animal bounced from one branch to the next as I bushwacked for position. A few grab shots was all I got in the few minutes before it disappeared."

The fact that the Calabar and Golden angwantibos ( Arctocebus calabarensis and A. aureus ) remain some of the least studied nocturnal prosimians and are also listed as endangered (CITES) makes it essential to increase our knowledge of these secretive primates. Ranomafana National Park, Madagascar—The island of Madagascar is one of the planet's foremost biodiversity hotspots, a tropical Eden threatened with large-scale destruction by unsustainable human activities. Fortunately, Dr. Pat Wright (State University of New York, Stony Brook) is there.
This remarkable woman was a housewife who bought a monkey for a pet and soon found herself fascinated by primates. That fascination led to a doctorate in primatology, a position at the State University of New York, Stony Brook, and 15 years of work on behalf of Madagascar's forests, people, and animals.
She discovered a species of lemur previously unknown to science, spearheaded the creation of Ranomafana National Park, and helped thousands of villagers initiate sustainable community development practices. Wright's pioneering work has earned her a MacArthur "genius" award and led to her being knighted by the Malagasy government.
Field Conditions
Ranomafana is high in the mountains, so it's cool and very wet, with 43,500 hectares of dense, rugged jungle. Currently undergoing improvements, the research station should offer dorm accommodations with flush toilets and cold showers, a classroom and a laboratory. Park staff will prepare and clean up all meals, which tend to be based on rice and beans, steamed vegetables, eggs, and fresh fruit.

Distinguished Conduct Medal Medal for Distinguished Conduct in the Field (DCM)
This medal was instituted in December 1854, and was awarded to Warrant Officers, NCOs and men for "distinguished conduct in the field". In practice, it is considered second only to the Victoria Cross in terms of prestige. It is not awarded for service or for leadership, but individual acts of courage. As such it is exceedingly rare. For example, only 161 Canadians were awarded the DCM for service in World War Two (with one second award, or Bar, also being awarded). Seven of them were Calgary Highlanders. It was not unheard of for soldiers recommended for the Victoria Cross to be awarded the DCM in lieu; this was the case with Sergeant Ken Crockett, DCM, of the Calgary Highlanders. The Military Medal, considered a lower award for bravery, was not introduced until 1916, so the award of DCMs earlier in the war may have been slightly more generous. A typical citation (this one for Lance Corporal George William Allan) would be as follows (as published in the London Gazette No. 29202, dated June 30, 1915)

ACQUISITION: The Edward Alexander MacDowell Collection was given to the University of New Hampshire by Mrs. Robert Manton in 1972. Requests for permission to publish material from this collection should be discussed with the Special Collections Librarian. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Edward Alexander MacDowell (1860-1908) was the first American composer to achieve international recognition. Born in New York City in 1860, MacDowell studied music as a child and travelled to France at the age of 15 to begin a nine year residence in Europe. He returned to the United States in June of 1884 to marry Marian Nevins. Praised for his compositions as well as for his piano playing ability, MacDowell was a popular figure throughout the late 1880s and early 1890s. In fact, he was described by some of his contemporaries as "the greatest musical genius America has produced." In 1896, Columbia University offered MacDowell a job as as Professor of Music and he taught there for eight years, resigning in 1904 due to philosophical disagreements with the faculty. By 1905, MacDowell suffered from what was diagnosed as "nervous exhaustion," an ailment that resulted in complete "cerebral collapse." He died in 1908 at the age of forty-six.
