RANOMAFANA NATIONAL PARK Vatoharanana Site BRIEF HISTORY: The main research station is located near the village of Ranomafana (meaning "hot water") in southeastern Madagascar near Fianarantsoa. The forest around Ranomafana was first surveyed by a Duke University research team headed by Patricia Wright during the summer of 1986. Through Dr. Wright's efforts, the area became designated a National Park in 1991. Dr. Wright (State University of New York- Stony Brook) developed the Talatakely (meaning "little Tuesday) field station as part of her studies on the behavioral ecology of Milne Edward's sifaka and bamboo lemurs. In 1988, a satellite camp called Vatoharanana (meaning "crystal rock") was first used by Dr. Frances White (Duke University) who was studying black and white ruffed lemurs. That same year Dr. Overdorff began her study of brown and red-bellied lemurs and has continued to develop the Vatoharanana site. Vatoharanana The Vatoharanana study area is characterized as Central Domain forest and Monimiaceae, Cunoniaceae, Lauraceae, and Myrtaceae are predominant plant families. Annual rainfall is unimodal, with drier periods occurring between April and September and the wettest months occurring between October and March. The current study area encompasses a 5 km trail system. There are twelve species of prosimian primate that occur in the National Park area but not all of them are found in the Vatoharanana study area. Further details of the area and what would be needed if you were to work there can be found in the

NOTE: Dr. Overdorff is not currently accepting new graduate students.
Dr. Overdorff studies primate behavior and ecology, and works primarily on prosimian primates in Madagascar. Her current research interest is investigating ecological and non-ecological influences on primate social structure, specifically lemurs. Her other research interests include dental microwear and its relationship to food properties, infant development patterns, parental care, and captive management of primate colonies. Madagascar– "The eighth continent" 28 September – 16 October 2003 Trip report and checklist Leader:
Keith Barnes Participants:
The spectacular scenery at Isalo was breathtaking (C. Bell) Introduction This was a sensational Madagascar trip recording 180 bird species (115 endemics and near-endemics) in 18 days of birding. All the participants saw every species of Ground-roller including mind-blowing views of Short-legged, Pitta-like, Rufous-headed and Long-tailed Ground Rollers (three of which we got on video!!). The Scaly was elusive but after some effort everybody got satisfactory views. We also had absorbing looks at each of the world’s three Mesite species and saw all 13 species of Vanga that were possible on this itinerary. Perhaps the two most unusual birds were the 6 Bernier’s Teal and 11 Madagascar White Ibis in the Betsiboka estuary. Tropical Birding is one of the few companies that attempts to see these two mega-rare globally endangered species on its tours and our adventurous spirit was rewarded again. Other highlights included three species of A sity , a host of Couas , the bizarre and magnificent Cuckoo-roller Crab Plovers Red-tailed Tropicbird Madagascar Crested Ibis on the nest and the common but localised Littoral Rock Thrush . The beauty of Tropical Birding’s Madagascar departure is that the trip is limited to a maximum of 8 participants resulting in almost every participant getting to see every species on the trip. Nobody that participated in all the activities missed a single bird, emphasising Tropical Birding’s commitment to high quality birding experiences. Our mammal experiences were equally rewarding, with

Madagascar Birding Tour 2005 Trip Report 2002 Trip Report 2003 ... Trip Report 2004 TRIP REPORT:
BIRDING IN MADAGASCAR
OCTOBER 1 - 15, 2002
Before the group arrived, Derek Schuurman from Rainbow Tours, Mrs Nivo Ravelojaona and I (ANDRINIRINA Garina Roger ) met to create the itinerary. This was difficult because, while we were used to designing tours of 20 and more days, this needed to be a 15-day tour. Our task was to create a condensed tour without sacrificing the birding.
The high percentage of endemism and beauty of scenery make Madagascar one of the most memorable of birding adventures. We succeeded completely. Participants saw more endemic species than many groups who spend more than 20 days in Madagascar see. Thanks to the expertise of our local guides, the tightly organised itinerary, and the enthusiasm of our clients, we had a fantastic although rigorous tour.
We used highly skilled guides and stayed in comfortable accommodation. With my long history of working with each of the local guides, the visits to each birding site went smoothly. Each hotel made special arrangements for early breakfasts so we could get a fresh start to our birding day and provided picnic lunches on the days when we did not wish to interrupt our birding.

Prosimians: The Most Ancient Living Primates
Cladogram after Tudge in The Tree of Life What are Cladograms? Cladograms show presumed relationships between organisms. Traditionally, the earliest (oldest, most primitive) forms are shown at the top, the most recent (youngest or most derived) at the bottom.
The Prosimians, found chiefly in Madagascar, are listed on this page. The Platyrrhini are the New World monkeys. Cercopithecoidea are Old World monkeys, Hominoidea include the Gibbons, Lesser and Great Apes. A few extinct forms are asterisked.
Taxonomic listings (these pages) generally follow the sequence of Orders, Families and Genera as revealed by such cladograms or taxonomic "trees." These trees are subject to change as newer and better information becomes available, especially from modern genetic and biochemical research.
