Marin Mersenne Descartes , who was eight years younger than Mersenne, was enrolled at the same school although they are not thought to have become friends until much later. In 1623 he published his first two papers consisting of studies against atheism and scepticism in France; L'usage de la raison and L'analyse de la vie spirituelle. Continuing his theological writing he had then wanted to disprove magic, however a fellow monk pointed out that it wasn't appropriate, leading to his publication of Quaestiones celeberrime in genesim that includes the disapproval of magicians in the Scriptures. This book contains 1900 columns of text from the Bible in its first six chapters. It was because of this publication that, in September 1624 when he returned to Paris, he met Gassendi who had been asked to comment on Mersenne's results, and later became his closest friend.

Marin Mersenne
Jesuit Descartes , his fellow student, originated. Mersenne entered the novitiate of the Minims at Nigeon near Paris (1611), was sent to Nevers as professor of philosophy (1614-1620), and returned to Paris. His first publications were theological and polemical studies against Atheism and Scepticism, but later, Mersenne devoted his time almost exclusively to science, making personal experimental researches, and publishing a number of works on mathematical sciences. His chief merit, however, is rather the encouragement which he gave to scientists of his time, the interest he took in their work, and the stimulating influence of his suggestions and questions. Gassendi and Galileo were among his friends; but, above all, Mersenne is known to-day as Descartes's friend and adviser. In fact, when Descartes began to lead a free and dissipated life, it was Mersenne who brought him back to more serious pursuits and directed him toward philosophy. In Paris, Mersenne was Descartes's assiduous correspondent, auxiliary, and representative, as well as his constant defender. The numerous and vehement attacks against the "Meditations" seem, for a moment, to have aroused Mersenne's suspicions; but Descartes's answers to his critics gave him full satisfaction as to his friend's orthodoxy and sincere

(4 December 1996) Mersenne was a Minim friar. Minims are not Jesuits. He was, however, educated by the Jesuits. Furthermore, Mersenne was not an Inquisitor. Indeed, he was probably quite a pleasant fellow. Please read these enlightening and scholarly emails that I received. (Learn the fate of his old residence!)
Who was Marin Mersenne?
You are probably visiting here because of an interest in Mersenne Primes. It was not until the mid 20th century that Mersenne became known primarily for his Prime Number Conjecture. Historically, he was much better known for his correspondence with leading scientists of the day (hence the other Mersenne Mailing List ). Interested in optics, he also been called (no pun intended) the Father of Acoustics. Here are some links that will tell you something about the man himself: a nice biography (and another picture!) courtesy of the Algebra Group WWW Server of the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. Marin Mersenne.

Mersenne's scientific contributions span a wide range of interests, ranging from biblical exegesis to philosophy, from mechanics to musical theory and acoustics, from geometry to optics, from pneumatics to linguistics. At another level, beyond the specific results of these intense research activities, Mersenne performed a particularly important role in organising European culture of the time. Among those who came to his convent cell or who entered into close correspondence with him, we find, amongst others, Peiresc, Gassendi, Descartes, Roberval, Beeckman, van Helmont, Fermat, Hobbes, Pascal and Baliani. The French Minim favoured contact between savants , putting them in touch with each other, and promoting debate and scientific cooperation. In the informal role of secretary of the republic of letters, he nursed the plan to establish a European scientific academy.
Mersenne participated actively in the debates on the problem of the vacuum, above all during and after his trip to Italy in 1644. He then had the opportunity to assist some barometrical experiments, and discuss with the main players in the Italian scientific movement. He then disseminated their findings in France.

8. Sept 1588 in Maine, Frankreich - 1.

Mersenne, Marin Mersenne was a French priest who played an important role in mathematics. Mersenne corresponded with numerous mathematicians throughout Europe, passing important information between them. There were no scientific journals during his time, so he played the role of a disseminator of valuable information. He frequently met with Fermat, Roberval, and Pascal. His own work was in generating prime numbers and extending Galileo's work in acoustics. Mersenne actively defended Galileo and Descartes against attacks from the church.

Mersenne, Marin (1588-1648)
A French monk, philosopher, and mathematician best remembered for his work to find a formulate to generate prime numbers based on what are now known as Mersenne numbers . However, he was not primarily a mathematician; he wrote about music theory and other subjects, edited works of Euclid, Archimedes, and other Greek mathematicians, but most importantly corresponded extensively with mathematicians and other scientists in many countries. At a time before scientific journals existed, Mersenne was at the heart of a network for information exchange.
