Woodfords Merrills Willis Perry Merrill Willis Perry Merrill(8), Noel(7), Cyrenus(6), Aaron(5), Cyprian(4), John(3), John(2), Nathaniel(1), was born in Westport, New York October 5 1835 and died September 7, 1899, in Woodfords, California, was the eldest of the six children of Noel Merrill and Parmelia Cole of Westport, New York. Noel Merrill was a descendent of Nathaniel Merrill, who along with his brother John, immigrated to New England in 1635 and settled in Newbury, Massachusetts. Parmelia Cole was a descendent of James Cole of Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts, and has lineage to the Royal Families of the British Isles and Europe. Willis P. Merrill came to the gold fields of California from Vermont in early 1853 and settled in Dogtown, which is now Marysville, California. Willis did very little mining, instead he found more of a fortune in carrying supplies to the various camps and settlements from the navigation head of the Yuba River in Northern California, through the Mother Lode and eventually into Nevada. When Willis came to California he brought his trade with him. Descending from a family of weavers and tanners, Willis brought with him, by ship around the horn, a woolen mill given to him by his uncle, Prosper Merrill(7), Cyrenus(6), Aaron(5), Cyprian(4), John(3), John(2), Nathaniel(1), of Vermont. Coming to California with Willis, via the Isthmus of Panama, was a companion that is speculated by some Merrill Family researchers to be Hiram Seeley Cole, Willis's uncle. However, buried at the Woodfords Pioneer Cemetery is the grave of a James Havrey Cole, 1834-1924, who would have been about the same age as Willis. It has not been ascertained if he is from the same Cole family or not.

Oldtown Folks
by Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896)
While she is invariable remembered today for her anti-slavery writings, Harriet Beecher Stowe also wrote a number of stories and novels of set in her native New England, including Oldtown Folks (1869). The quality of her work varies, but at her best, Stowe was an early and effective realist. Her settings are often accurately and detailedly described. Her portraits of local social life, particularly some of the minor characters, reflect an awareness of the complexity of the culture she lived in, and an ability to communicate that culture to others.
Tales of the Punjab
by Flora Annie Steel (1847-1929)
Flora Annie Steel went to India as a young bride in 1868. Under conditions that sent many memsahibs home in shattered health, or killed them outright, she flourished. She travelled through the hill country, collecting folk-tales, which were eventually published as Tales of the Punjab: Told by the People (1894). She worked actively in the Indian communities, in roles as diverse as school inspector, nurse, 'doctress', and even Municipal Hall designer. She also published the definitive Complete Indian House-keeper and Cook (1890) as well as histories and novels of British India.

Introduction
RUTH PENNELL and Winifred Merrill lived in Philadelphia. The city had been for some time in the hands of General Howe and the British army. Ruth's father was with Washington at Valley Forge, and the little girls were ardent supporters of the American cause, and admirers of the gallant young Frenchman, the Marquis de Lafayette. Children in 1778 were much like those of to-day, and Ruth and her friends, eager as they were for the war to end successfully, were fond of dolls and pets, and games and little plays. Yet they kept their ears open, and when Ruth overheard what two British soldiers said she knew how to make good use of her knowledge. In each of the other "Little Maid" books is the story of an American girl during the Revolution. The other stories are A Little Maid of Old New York and A Little Maid of Maryland [Page] [Page]

    Introduction
For my research, I chose 20 women, all born in the United States of America, who earned their first college degree (usually a Bachelor's) before 1900. I chose these women primarily because the period prior to 1900 was a challenging time for women wishing to study mathematics in the United States. By 1900, women could more easily enroll in colleges or universities. "A woman who wished to study science in 1900 could find both undergraduate and graduate training of a high order" (Rossiter 1982, 320). Unfortu nately, there is a dearth of information on women studying mathematics earlier than the 1860s, so my study is limited to the period between 1866 and 1900.
