WINIFRED EDGERTON (1863 - September 6, 1951) , the first woman to earn a doctorate at Columbia University and an early supporter of Barnard College, was born in Ripon, Wisconsin and later moved with her family to New York City. In 1883, after graduating from Wellesley College, where she had demonstrated exceptional ability in mathematics and astronomy, she came home to New York to live with her parents. She did some work for the Harvard Observatory, making an independent calculation of the orbit of a comet from data that Harvard furnished and tried to find a way to pursue graduate education. Through Melvil Dewey (of the famed Dewey Decimal System), who had just moved from

Barnard urged Edgerton to apply to do graduate work and, when the Columbia Trustees rebuffed her, suggested that she visit the trustees individually to plead her case. Eventually she won the favor of all, including even the Reverend Morgan Dix, who in addition to serving as a trustee was the rector of Trinity Church. Dix vigorously opposed opening Columbia College to women, but he came to see that Winifred Edgerton was a special case. She was not applying to the College but rather to the graduate school., and her talent and seriousness of purpose were immediately apparent. She needed a telescope (only Columbia had one in those days), and the professor of astronomy needed an assistant. And since her family worshipped at Trinity Church, Dr. Dix was assured of her good character. Believing that no precedent would be set, the trustees voted to allow Miss Edgerton to pursue her studies.

Winifred Edgerton Winifred Edgerton was the first woman to earn a doctorate at Columbia University. She was born on September 24, 1862, in Ripon, Wisconsin, and later moved with her family to New York City. Winifred graduated from Wellesley College with an exceptional ability in mathematics and astronomy. She then moved on to work at the Harvard Observatory. Through Melvil Dewey (as in the Dewey Decibel System), who was serving as the Columbia librarian, Winifred met with the Columbia President F. A. P. Bernard, who tried to open the University to women. After working there at graduate school for two years, in 1886 she was the first woman to receive a Columbia Ph. D. She also received a standing ovation which went on for over two minutes, She had leaned towards becoming a professor, and then met her husband, John Hamilton Merrill, and chose marriage over professing. Eventually, they moved to Albany, after her husband would not let her have a job he would take. Even after this move, he still forbade her to do much work that he called unladylike. She had four children, and in 1906 founded Oaksmere School for Girls, which she ran for twenty years afterwards.

Members of the U.S. team:
Maybelle Gilliland
Maybelle Gilliland had completed her junior year at Leonia High School in the summer of 1922. She was the daughter of William J. and Elizabeth J. Gilliland of Bogota, New Jersey. At the Oaksmere meet, Maybelle won both the 50 and 100-yard dashes.
  • In Paris, Maybelle was entered in the 60-meters, the 100-yard dash, and a member of the 440-yard team. She failed to reach the finals in the first two events and the U.S. relay team was penalized after finishing second and given fourth place. Maybelle's high school coach and assistant team coach, Suzanne Becker indicates that Maybelle was hampered in Paris by a knee injury. Maybelle continued to compete in track and field events after the meet in Paris.
  • September 1923, AAU first National Track and Field Championships for women. Maybelle, running for the City Bank Club, set the record for the 100-yard dash.
  • March 1924, AAU Indoor Championships at Madison Square Garden. Maybelle, running the 2nd leg, helped set a new world's record time in the 440-relay. Again representing the City Bank Club, the other relay team members were Marion McCartie, M. Hassard, and Karin Carlsson.
  • In July 1925, Women's National AAU Track and Field Championships in Pasadena, California. Maybelle represented the Savage School (NYC) finishing 2nd in the 50-yard dash and 4th in the 100-yard dash.

Charles Diven Campbell appointed founding head of Department of Music
Charles Campbell, an Anderson, Indiana, native, received a doctorate in philology from the University of Strassburg in 1905, spent a year at Harvard upon his return, and in 1906 was appointed instructor of German at Indiana University. Campbell was promoted to assistant professor in 1908, but his true passion was music. In 1907, Campbell arranged for a recital of the Schellschmidt Quartet of Indianapolis, the proceeds of which established a music fund, “to lead ultimately to the equipment of a school of music in the university.” In 1909, he offered a series of noncredit lectures on the history of music. He conducted The Mikado at Bloomington’s Harris Grand Theater in 1909, and the operetta Robin Hood in 1910. Early course offerings included Orchestra, Chorus, and the History and Development of Music, and early enrollment jumped from 214 the first year of operation to 281 the second year.
