The Mercator Project
Gerardus Mercator , 1512-1594. Flemish cartographer whose most important innovation was a map, later known as the Mercator projection, on which parallels and meridians are rendered as straight lines spaced so as to produce at any point an accurate ratio of latitude to longitude. Mercator also introduced the term atlas for a collection of maps. Our crawler, like the famous cartographer, aims at producing ``maps'' of the known (virtual) world that accurately depict its dimensions. Moreover, our crawler's extensibility means it can be used to produce not just one map, but many.

We use the connectivity-based metric PageRank to measure the quality of a page. We show that traversing the web graph in breadth-first search order is a good crawling strategy, as it tends to discover high-quality pages early on in the crawl. Monika R. From 1537 to 1540 he surveyed and mapped Flanders . In 1538 he produced his first map of the world (based on Ptolemy's map); in 1541 he made a terrestrial, and in 1551 a celestial, globe. He was appointed (1552) to the chair of cosmography in Duisburg. In 1554 he made a six-sheet map of Europe. The first map using the projection (the translation of the spherical earth to a two-dimensional flat plane) that bears his name appeared in 1569. Accurate in equitorial regions but distorting the size and shape of numerous other areas of the world, the Mercator projection has been more generally used than any other projection for navigators' world maps. In 1585, Mercator began a work (for which he coined the word atlas ) that included many of his earlier maps; the atlas was completed by his son and published in 1594. Mercator did cartographical work for Charles V and was cosmographer to the duke of JUlich and Cleves. He wrote several books on subjects such as ancient geography and the science and mathematics of geography and cartography.

MERCATOR, GERARDUS [latinized form of Gerhard KREMER] (1512 – 1594), Flemish mathematician and geographer, was born at Rupelmonde, in Flanders, on the 5th of March 1512. Having studied at Bois-le-Duc and Louvain (where he matriculated on the 29th of August 1530, and became licentiate in October 1532), he met Gemma Frisius, a pupil of Apian of Ingolstadt, who at the request of the emperor Charles V. had settled in Louvain. From Frisius young Kremer derived much of his inclination to cartography and scientific geography. In 1534 he founded his geographical establishment at Louvain; in 1537 he published his earliest known map, now lost (Terrae sanctae descriptio). In 1537 – 1540 he executed his famous survey and map of Flanders (Exactissima Flandriae descriptio), of which a copy exists in the Musee Plantin, Antwerp. At the order of Charles V. Mercator made a complete set of instruments of observation for the emperor's campaigns: when these were destroyed by fire, in 1546, another set was ordered of the same maker. In 1538 appeared Mercator's map of the world in (north and south) hemispheres, which was rediscovered in 1878 in New York; this work shows Ptolemy's influence still dominant over Mercatorian cartography. In 1541 he issued the celebrated terrestrial globe, which he dedicated to Nicolas Perrenot, father of Cardinal Granvelle: this was accompanied by his Libellus de usu globi

A humble man with a universal vision, Mercator coined the term `atlas', which he gave to his work of modern geography; it would later become the standard term for a book of maps. Gerhard Kremer
Mercator 1512. március 5-én látta meg a napvilágot mint Gerhard Kremer. Szülõvárosa a németalföldi Rupelmonde a mai Belgium területén található.
