Gerardus Mercator 1512-1594
Gerardus Mercator was a geographer, cartographer and mathematician born in Flanders. He is best known for a new mapping technique that bears his name, the Mercator projection. The quality of his maps made them a copy source for generations of mapmakers.
Gerhard Kremer - alias Gerardius Mercator
Gerard Mercator is something like the grandfather of modern map making. His original name was Gerhard Kremer. Regarding his importance for the history of cartography, he is compared to Ptolemy, the ancient scholar from Alexandria in Egypt. Mercator was born in Rupelmonde in Flanders and had studied geography, cartography and mathematics at the University of Leuven (Louvain) in Belgium. He published his first map in 1537 at the age of 25 - a map of Palestine. From 1537 to 1540 Gerardus Mercator surveyed and mapped Flanders. In 1538 he made and published his first world map. It was based on the Ptolemy map. The maps by Ptolemy had been completely lost in Europe during the dark Middle Ages. Thanks to Arab scholars, some of the Ptolemy maps were saved and came back to Europe during the Renaissance period.

New Life for a 400-Year-Old Atlas by Gerardus MercatorAn Interview with the Publisher of the English-Language Edition Lost until recently, Gerardus Mercator's legendary 16th-century Europe atlas is now published in English. Below is an Interview with the Publisher of the English-Language Edition. by Shel Horowitz The Mercator Atlas of Europe is an amazing and unusual book. Its publisher describes it as, "The Mercator Atlas of Europe: 17 facsimile prints from a long- lost 16th-century atlas by Mercator and a richly illustrated large format book, enclosed in a linen portfolio and laminated slipcase." But that's only part of the story. This elegant volume not only includes a facsimile of an atlas by famed 16-th century cartographer Gerardus Mercator (inventor of the Mercator Projection, which allowed sailorsfor the first timeto plot a straight-line course on a map), but also contains several scholarly monographs, as well as numerous full-color ancient maps from Mercator, his sons, and many of his contemporaries. The maps representing the original atlas are presented as unbound, fold-out sheets, separated by country or region. Shel Horowitz, editor of Global Arts Review and Global Travel Review, talked with Liz Oakley of Walking Tree Press, the book's American publisher.

Gerardus Mercator
born March 5, 1512, Rupelmonde, Flanders
died Dec. 2, 1594, Duisburg, Duchy of Cleve
Flemish cartographer. orig. Gerard Kremer He received a master's degree in 1532 from the University of Louvain (Belgium), where he settled. By 24 he was a skilled engraver, calligrapher, and scientific-instrument maker. He and his colleagues made Louvain a centre for construction of maps, globes (terrestrial and celestial), and astronomical instruments. He was appointed court cosmographer to Duke Wilhelm of Cleve in 1564, and in 1569 he perfected what has become known as the Mercator projection, in which parallels and meridians are rendered as straight lines spaced so as to produce at any point an accurate ratio of latitude to longitude. It permitted mariners to steer a course over long distances, plotting straight lines without continually adjusting compass readings. While the meridians are equally spaced parallel vertical lines, the lines of latitude are spaced farther and farther apart as their distance from the Equator increases; on world maps the projection greatly enlarges areas distant from the Equator.
