MERCATOR
Gerardus Mercator, 1512 - 1594 Considered by many to be the greatest cartographer of early modern times, Gerardus Mercator was born Gerhard Kremer of German parents in the town of Rapelmonde near Antwerp on March 5, 1512. Like many other intellectuals of his time, very early in his life he Latinized his German name, which meant 'merchant,' and changed it to the name by which we know him. Mercator means 'world trader.'
Mercator was one of the first mapmakers to cut up maps and bind them inside boards, later coining the term 'atlas' to refer to such collections of maps. He is best-known to us today for his celebrated cylindrical world map projection, first used in 1569, which enabled navigators to plot a long course in straight lines. One of the most revolutionary inventions in the history of cartography, Mercator's projection has greatly influenced our image of the world.

Gerard Mercator 's parents were Hubert and Emerentia Kremer. Hubert Kremer worked the land and also was a cobbler, that is a shoemaker. Hubert and Emerentia were people of lowly status but Hubert had an brother Gisbert who had been educated at Louvain University and was a priest in Rupelmonde. It was in the hospice of St Johann in Rupelmonde, where Gisbert was a priest, that Gerard was born. He was the seventh child of Hubert and Emerentia who, a few weeks after the birth, returned to their home town of Gangelt. For the first five years of his life Gerard and his parents lived in difficult conditions in Gangelt. The family income was insufficient to provide for more than the basic needs of life and most of their diet consisted of bread for they could afford little else. Hubert had leased a house in Rupelmonde in 1511, shortly before Gerard's birth, and in 1518 they journeyed from Gangelt to Rupelmonde to begin a new life. Gerard began attending school in Rupelmonde shortly after the family came to live there. At school he studied Latin, religion and arithmetic. By the time he was seven years old he was able to speak and to read Latin fluently. Gisbert's influence meant that it was natural for Gerard and his brothers to aim at a career in the Church and indeed that was the route that his two eldest brothers took. Conditions in Rupelmonde began to deteriorate in the early 1520s, however, with huge increases in taxes to fund the war between the Habsburgs and France. The reformation, begun by Luther, escalated into revolution in 1525. The harsh times and the hard work that he put in to try to support his family took their toll on Hubert who died in 1526 or 1527. His brother Gisbert became Gerard's guardian.

    INTRODUCTION
Gerhard Kremer, or Gerardus Mercator was the leading mapmaker of the 15th Century.
    BACKGROUND
Gerardus Mercator was born March 5, 1518, in Dumpelunde, Flanders (Belgium). He died Dec. 2, 1594, in Duisburg, Duchy of Cleve (Germany). His original name was Gerard de Kremer. Gerardus's father was a shoemaker in Flanders. He was educated at Shertogenbosch located in the Netherlands. In 1530 he entered the University of Levine where he studied philosophy. He later graduated after studying mathematics. After school he studied astronomy privately. He also travelled to a number of places (including Antwerp and Mechelen) while going through a personal crisis. Mercator returned to Levine where he studied mathematics. He spent seven months in jail but was released, mainly due to strong support from the University of Levine. In 1552 he moved to Duisburg where he opened a cartographic workshop.
    ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Mercator's disciplines were cartography and geography. From 1535-1536 Mercator made terrestrial globes for several rich individuals. In 1537 Mercator constructed a globe of the stars. He was the first to use longitude and latitude for sailors. Mercator was also very good at making an accurate map of Western Europe. Later Mercator lectured at Duisburg where he took some time off to make

Flat maps of the world are often shown in what is called a Mercator projection. Such maps are named after Gerardus Mercator, the foremost geographer of the 16th century. He also introduced the word atlas to refer to a bound collection of maps.
Mercator was born on March 5, 1512, in Rupelmonde, Flanders (now in Belgium). He began his education at a school operated by the Brothers of the Common Life in Hertogenbosch. From there he went to the University of Louvain, from which he graduated with a master's degree in 1532. Two years of further study turned his interest to geography. He learned astronomy, geography, and mathematics from Gemma Frisius, the leading mathematician of the Low Countries. Mercator also studied engraving, calligraphy, and instrument making all talents he later used effectively in mapmaking. Beginning in 1537 he produced a series of maps and a book on italic lettering. His work was interrupted in 1544, when he was arrested and detained for seven months on a charge of religious heresy.
In order to continue working without interference from the authorities, he moved to Duisburg (now in Germany). It was there in 1569 that he used the projection for which he is famous on a cylindrical map of the world. He preferred the straight-line map because it enabled sailors to steer a course over long distances without frequent changes in

A map projection is used to portray all or part of the round Earth on a flat surface. This cannot be done without some distortion. For example, the basic Mercator projection is unique; it yields the only map on which a straight line drawn anywhere within its bounds shows a particular type of direction, but distances and areas are grossly distorted near the map's polar regions. It was introduced by Geradus Mercator in 1569. Gerardus Mercator
The Mercator projection was developed in 1569 by Gerardus Mercator as a navigation tool.

He studied in Louvain , where he had a geographical establishment (1534). From 1537 to 1540 he surveyed and mapped Flanders . In 1538 he produced his first map of the world (based on Ptolemy's map); in 1541 he made a terrestrial, and in 1551 a celestial, globe. He was appointed (1552) to the chair of cosmography in Duisburg. In 1554 he made a six-sheet map of Europe. The first map using the projection (the translation of the spherical earth to a two-dimensional flat plane) that bears his name appeared in 1569. Accurate in equitorial regions but distorting the size and shape of numerous other areas of the world, the Mercator projection has been more generally used than any other projection for navigators' world maps.
