Leonhard Euler (1707-1783) Leonhard Euler was the most published mathematician of all time. There is probably not a single branch of mathematics known during his lifetime which he did not influence. If a difficult problem arose, Euler was generally consulted, and could often solve it. Euler was born near Basel, Switzerland and raised in the village of Riehen. His father was a Protestant Minister, and his mother was also from a clerical family. He was expected to follow his father into the clergy. He was an able student, mastering languages and mathematics and a memory for matters of detail. He entered the University of Basel at the age of 14. A Professor of mathematics there was Johann Bernoulli (1667-1748), arguably the world's greatest active mathemtician. Euler became a good friend of Bernoulli, who became his mentor. Both men appeared to have inspired each other greatly during their regular meetings. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Philosophy Degree from Basel University. He did afterwards enter divinity school but found the call of mathematics to be greater. Bernoulli's son Daniel (1700-1782) moved to Russia in 1725 to take up a position at the newly formed St Petersburg Academy. In the following year Euler was invited to join him and he arrived in the year 1727. Living at the same home as Daniel Bernoulli Euler was able to discuss and collaborate with him extensively.

Srinivasa Ramanujan LEONHARD EULER was one of the greatest mathematicians of all time, on par with Gauss, Newton and Archimedes. Euler's fundamental contributions have influenced almost every branch of mathematics. He was without doubt the most prolific mathematician in history. Indeed, even the blindness that physically handicapped him in his later years did not diminish his furious productivity. Euler was a master of infinite series and products. Eric Temple Bel in his famous book Men of Mathematics says that with regard to the ease and brilliance with which Euler manipulated infinite processes, only Ramanujan rivalled him. Similarly, G. H. Hardy of Cambridge University compared Ramanujan to Euler and Jacobi for sheer manipulative ability.

Prop B: H(2n) - H(n) is monoton increasing and converges to log(2). The limit of 1 - 1/2 + 1/3 - 1/4 ... was first calculated by Nicolaus Mercator [Logarithmotechnia, 1667]. He found the series log(1+x) = x - x^2/2 + x^3/3 - x^4/4 ... But you can do that without using the Taylor series. Adding the estimates 1/(n+1) < 1/n gives H(2n)-H(n) < H(2n) - H(n) <= n then 2^t divides the denumerator. See [Theisinger], [AAA], [Trigg, Q211], [GKP88 Exc 6.21]. [Nagell] found the generalization that every subsequence of the harmonic series in arithmetical progression is non integral too except the trivial case H(1) = 1. For the sum 1 + 1/3 + 1/5 + ... + 1/(2n-1) see [BBB]. Prop D: H(n) diverges. The text book proof e. g. [Northrop] is the following H(oo) = 1 + 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/4 + 1/5 + 1/6 + 1/7 + 1/8 + 1/9 ... >= 1 + 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/16 ... = 1 + 1/2 + 1/2 + 1/2 + This estimate was first described by Nicole Oresme.
