Pietro Mengoli was taught mathematics by Cavalieri at the University of Bologna before he himself taught at Bologna from 1648. While he taught he studied for a doctorate in philosophy which was awarded by the University of Bologna in 1650. Continuing to study while he held chairs of mathematics, three years later he obtained a second doctorate in civil and canon law from Bologna. He was also ordained into the priesthood. After Cavalieri died in November 1647, Mengoli had been appointed to his chair at the University of Bologna. Mengoli held a number of chairs at the University of Bologna where he taught all his life. He was professor of arithmetic from 1648 to 1649, then professor of mechanics from 1649 to 1668 and, finally, professor of mathematics from 1668 until his death in 1686. In addition to these chairs he was also a priest in the parish of Santa Maria Maddelena in Bologna from 1660. His role in the development of mathematics is described in [1]:- Mengoli's mathematics was superficially conservative. He did not subscribe to the innovations of

    Birth: Italian
    Career: Italian
    Death: Italian
    4. Education
    Schooling: Bologna, Ph.D., Ll.D.
Mengoli studied mathematics with Cavalieri at Bologna. After Cavalieri's death Giovanni Antonio Rocca of Reggio guided his study of mathematics. He took a degree (this means a doctorateMengoli identified himself on title pages as "Doctor") in philosophy in 1650, and another (also a doctorate) in civil and canon law in 1653.
    5. Religion
    Affiliation: Catholic
Mengoli was ordained as a priest and served a parish in Bologna from 1660 to his death in 1686.
    6. Scientific Disciplines
    Primary: Mathematics
    Subordinate: Astronomy, Music, Optics
Mengoli's mathematics was superficially conservative, and he was in fact quickly forgotten. Recently, however, he has been rediscovered and is increasingly recognized as a transition between Cavalieri's indivisibles and Leibniz's differentials.
Novae quadraturae arithmeticae, 1650, significantly extended early work in infinite series.

MATHWORLD - IN PRINT Order book from Amazon Calculus and Analysis Series General Series ... Unsolved Problems Harmonic Series The series is called the harmonic series. It can be shown to diverge using the integral test by comparison with the function . The divergence, however, is very slow. Divergence of the harmonic series was first demonstrated by Nicole d'Oresme (ca. 1323-1382), but was mislaid for several centuries (Havil 2003, p. 23; Derbyshire 2004, pp. 9-10). The result was proved again by Pietro Mengoli in 1647, by Johann Bernoulli in 1687, and by Jakob Bernoulli shortly thereafter (Derbyshire 2004, pp. 9-10). Progressions of the form are also sometimes called harmonic series (Beyer 1987). Oresme's proof groups the harmonic terms by taking 2, 4, 8, 16, ... terms (after the first two) and noting that each such block has a sum larger than 1/2, and since an infinite sum of 1/2's diverges, so does the harmonic series.

In the early 19th century, local theory of geodesics was well known as an application of infinitesimal calculus to geometry, although equations for geodesics were generally hard to solve. With the work of Jacobi, Sturm and Liouville, a global qualitative treatment of geodesics emerged, through study of the conjugate locus, the cut locus and examination of global topological conditions.
