Hjalmar Mellin
mathematician . In the autumn of 1881 Mellin defended his doctoral dissertation on algebraic functions of a single complex variable. He made two sojourns in Berlin in 1881 and 1882 to study under Kurt Weierstrass and in 1883-84 he returned to continue his studies with Mittag-Leffler in Stockholm. Mellin was appointed as a docent at the University of Stockholm from 1884-91 but never actually gave any lectures. Also in 1884 he was appointed a senior lecturer in mathematics at the recently founded Polytechnic Institute which was later (in 1908) to become the Technical University of Finland. In 1901 Mellin withdrew his application for the vacant chair of mathematics at the University of Helsinki in favour of his illustrious (and younger) fellow countryman (1870-1946). During the period 1904-07 Mellin was Director of the Polytechnic Institute and in 1908 he became the first professor of mathematics at the new university. He remained at the university for a total of 42 years, retiring in 1926 at the age of 72.

    Mellin transform
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
In mathematics , the Mellin transform is an integral transform that may be regarded as the multiplicative version of the two-sided Laplace transform . This integral transform is closely connected to the theory of Dirichlet series , and is often used in number theory and the theory of asymptotic expansions ; it is closely related to the Laplace transform and the Fourier transform , and the theory of the gamma function and allied special functions The Mellin transform of a function f is The inverse transform is The notation implies this is a path integral taken over a vertical line in the complex plane. Conditions under which this inversion is valid are given in the Mellin inversion theorem The transform is named after the Finnish mathematician Robert Hjalmar Mellin edit
    Relationship to other transforms
The two-sided Laplace transform may be defined in terms of the Mellin transform by and conversely we can get the Mellin transform from the two-sided Laplace transform by The Mellin transform may be thought of as integrating using a kernel x s with respect to the multiplicative Haar measure , which is invariant under dilation , so that ; the two-sided Laplace transform integrates with respect to the additive Haar measure d x , which is translation invariant, so that d x a d x We also may define the Fourier transform in terms of the Mellin transform and vice-versa; if we define the two-sided Laplace transform as above, then

From the until Swedish, not Finnish , was the main language of jurisdiction and administration in Finland . In Finnish and Swedish became official languages with equal status, and at Finland's independence in Finnish clearly dominated in government and society. Finland has since then been a bilingual country with a Swedish-speaking minority (5.55% of total population on 2003), speaking Finland-Swedish, living mostly in the coastal areas of southern, south-western, and western Finland. During the 20th century, post- Industrial Revolution urbanization and the equal education between Finnish and Swedish speakers have led to large majorities of Finnish speakers in all major cities. The capital Helsingfors became the predominantly Finnish-speaking city Helsinki as early as around year [1900]. A large and important part of the Finland-Swedes nevertheless live in the capital.

The research is carried out in collaboration with S. E. Nielsen (University of Copenhagen) and Alain Dubois (University of Paris VI). The main goal of the research is to understand the magnitudes AND phases of the collision induced amplitudes, not to mention the full dynamics of the electronic charge cloud . For details, take a look at this review paper: On the use of semiclassical theories for differential scattering in inelastic heavy particle collisions, Comments on At. Mol. So far the focus have been on correlated charge transfer in multiply charged ion-atom collisions. Here is a some references: J. P. Hansen and K. Taulbjerg; Phys. Rev. A 47, (1993), 2987.
