So war es Glücksache, ob man Erich Mühsam, John Höxter oder Joachim Ringelnatz hier oder dort antraf. Auch Ernst Moritz Engert pendelte in der frühen Boheme-Zeit zwischen München und Berlin. Nachdem er in Schwabing fest dazugehörte, mietete er - dem Rate von Georg Heym folgend - in Berlin ein Atelier. Hier fand er sehr schnell Anschluss an den Kreis der jungen expressionistischen Dichter um Kurt Hiller und seinem "Neuen Club"; Erwin Loewenson . Ein tiefer Einschnitt, möglicherweise das vorläufige Ende der ersten Berliner Zeit, war der plötzliche Tod von Georg Heym, der zu seiner Schlittschuhpartie, von der er nicht mehr zurückkehrte, aus Engerts Atelier aufgebrochen war. Er hatte vorher noch mit dem Verleger Rohwohlt korrespondiert, da er dort sein Gedicht "Die Morgue", mit Zeichnungen von Engert unterbringen wollte
