A DOME W OF CRATER TOBIAS MAYER D (LSC vol. 40 no. 4, April 2003) A Phil Morgan’s drawing of the dome west of Tobias Mayer is reported in this page. It shows the double central pit of the dome, a larger one slightly elongated in the NW-SE direction and a smaller one inside it, probably an impact (?) crater. A fine image of the dome can be found on plate IV-133-H2 of the Lunar Orbiter atlas where one can see that the larger pit appears more elongated than in Phil's drawing. Based on the Orbiter image the two 'horns' depicted by Phil seem to be the northern and southern edges of a portion of the dome which has been rised by the underneath magma (or which remained high while the rest of the dome subsided). By measuring the lenght of the dome shadow on the drawing I obtained a dome altitude of about 260 m which agrees well with the value given in the revised ALPO dome catalogue (280 m). Here the dome position is given as 27.38° W / 11.95° N and its diameter as 12.3 km.

By: Jim Farr I am pleased to report the existence of a rare and previously unpublished Abbasid fals struck in al-Shash in AH 149. The province of al-Shash (ancient Chach, modern Tashkent) in Uzbekistan occupies a prominent place along the trade route known as the Silk Road. The earliest known coinage from Chach consists of local copper coins from the late 3rd century AD (Frye, 1996). Pre-Islamic coinage reached its zenith in the 4th and 5th centuries, with coins featuring a local tamga and the mint name Chach written in Aramaic (Rtveladze, 1998). Later copper coins from Chach are anepigraphic, and by the early 7th century, coinage had become decentralized, issued by rulers of semi-independent dominions within the region of Chach (Rtveladze, 1982, in Zeimal', 1994). Silver coinage consisted of Bukarkhudat drachms, some of which were struck in Chach province (Davidovich, 1979). The first raids by Moslem Arabs into Chach occured in AH 94-95/ 713-714 AD under the leadership of Qutaiba bin Muslim (Mayer, 1998). The earliest Islamic coins currently published from al-Shash are a silver dirham (perhaps unique) from Madinat al-Shash in AH 184, dirhams from Ma'dan al-Shash in AH 189, and a dirham from al-Shash in AH 195 (Mayer, 1998). It is unknown whether al-Shash, Madinat al-Shash and Ma'dan al-Shash are the same mint, but it seems reasonable that they are not. Zambaur (1968) listed dirhams struck in al-Shash in AH 163 and 166, but he himself doubted the existence of the example from AH 166, and Mayer (1998) reported that the AH 163 example is also spurious. Mayer concluded that the earliest Islamic coin struck in al-Shash was dated AH 184.

Watson Antiquarian Books Doppelmayr Celestial atlas Nuremberg, Homann, and Augsburg, Seutter, ca 1720-53 Folio (530 x 340 mm), 36 double-page size engravings, all on their original stubs, and with publishers' hand-colouring; a few contemporary annotations in French, occasional dampstaining (generally more visible on versos only), a very attractive copy in a contemporary flexible wallet binding of blind-stamped brown calf, inside of flap lined with patterned paper, 'Atlas astronomique' embossed in gilt on front cover, binding slightly rubbed, lower edge of flap a little worn at folds. £27,500 A SUPERB COMPOSITE CELESTIAL ATLAS, combining charts by Johann Gabriel Doppelmayer, Johann Tobias Mayer, and Georg Moritz Lovits, some of the best available at the time. Atlases in general were often assembled from the large stocks of the thriving Nuremberg map manufacturers and distributors at the customer's request. Ours is a fine example of a purely astronomical atlas from the officina Homann supplemented by several charts by Seutter, and assembled and bound at the customer's specifications. The maps are consecutively numbered in ink (beginning with 0), possibly in reference to the customer's order, with some numbers cropped upon binding. The larger part of the engravings are by Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr, whose Atlas novus coelestis was published separately by the heirs of Homann in 1742. The remaining charts in our composite atlas are a fine engraving by Seutter of terrestrial and celestial globes, followed by Homann's version of the same, Mayer's (2) on the partial lunar eclipse of 1748, Lovits' (2) on the solar eclipse of the same year, an unsigned cartographic chart incorporating diagrams of both the Copernican and Tychonic systems, Seutter's engraving of the comet of 1742, and a plate on recent developments in astronomy and geography by the same.
