Adolph Meyer
Founder of Meyersville
This photo (c1858) is a picture of Adolph Meyer and his wife Meta Friedrichs along with the first two of their 12 children, Adolphina and Adolph. Click on the photo for a larger view of the family. Adolph was born in Hanover, Germany on April 13, 1813 to John George and Juliana Peters Meyer. He came to Texas with two sisters, Mariana and Juliana, arriving in Galveston on December 4, 1845. They lived in Indianola, Texas for 5 months and after Juliana died, Adolph and Mariana along with Friedrich (Fritz) Hausman and his wife traveled to the Coletto Creek area in DeWitt County, arriving there on May 28, 1846. Other settlers soon followed and the settlement was named "Meyersville" in Adolph's honor. Adolph was the first postmaster of Meyersville, serving from 1851 until 1866, when his sister, Mariana took over and was postmistress until her death in 1872. Adolph married Meta Friedrichs who arrived in Indianola about May 14, 1852 after traveling from Aurick, Hanover, Germany with her parents, 2 brothers (Herman and Friedrich) and 2 sisters (Eliesa and Hannah). Meta's parents died about 3 weeks after their arrival in America and the children's court assigned the 5 children a guardian, who abandoned them in Meyersville. Pastor Sager of St. John Ev. Lutheran Church found homes for them and they grew up in Meyersville. Adolph and Meta were apparently married within 2-3 years of her arrival in Meyersville because their first child, Adolph Jr., was born on March 1, 1856. Adolph and Meta had 12 children and moved to Weesatche, Texas (about 10 miles from Meyersville) in Goliad County in the early 1880's. They are buried in St. Andrew's Lutheran Cemetery at Weesatche.

Typed by Margaret Rentrop Moore Adolph Meyer, Lake Charles - Adolph Meyer, president of the police jury of Calcasieu parish, and a successful business man of Lake Charles, is a native of Libery county, Texas, born August 14, 1854. He is the son of William and Joseph (Leichly) Meyer, natives of France, where they were married. In 1848 they came to the United States and located in Liberty, Texas. Wm. Meyer studied pharmacy in France, and upon his location in Liberty county he engaged in the drug business, in which he was occupied at the time of his death, 1867. During the was he was captain of a company of Home Guards. He was a prominent mason. Our subject's mother died when he was a child. Adolph Meyer is one of a family of five children. He spent his school days in Europe, where he devoted seven years to study, chiefly at Strasburg. Upon his arrival in the United States he was for some time engaged as clerk in a cotton house in Galveston. In 1875 he came to Lake Charles, and began the drug business in partnership with his brother William, with whom he was connected until 1889, since which time he has been conducting an independent business. In 1888 Mr. Meyer was elected mayor of Lake Charles, and served one year, on the expiration of which time he was appointed member of the police jury, and shortly afterward elected president. Mr. Meyer was united in marriage on December 4, 1880, with Miss Florence S. Munn, of Calcasieu parish. As the result of this union four children have been born, two sons and two daughters. Mr. Meyer is a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge at this place, and is the present M. E. of the lodge. He is also a K. of M. , and a member of the A. O. U. W.

State of Israel, Diaspora, and Jewish Continuity
Rawidowicz, Simon. Benjamin C. I. Ravid, ed.; Michael A. Meyer, fwd Philosophically rich and wide-ranging essays on Jewish history and culture. This readable, insightful, and thought-provoking collection of essays, presents an original and innovative ideology that stirringly affirms the unity of the Jewish people. Rawidowicz's rich themes include the relationship between the State of Israel and the Diaspora; Jewish "difference" and its repercussions; Jewish learning; and Jewish continuity in the post-Holocaust world. In his foreword to the paper edition, Michael A. Meyer writes, "Forty years after his death, [Rawidowicz's] sober analyses, his realism with regard to both the State of Israel and the Diaspora, and his striving to find unities among dichotomies that divide the Jewish people all of these make his images and ideas still worthy of our reflection."
"Rich in content, a pleasure to read, an encounter with the first-rate mind of a major historian of Jewish intellectual history reflecting on issues that engaged him passionately." Arnold Eisen, Stanford University

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. Richard Martin Second-rate photography benefits from an ascribed quintessence and allure seldom granted to second-rate painting and sculpture. In its happy ability to recall bygones, it offers us a bewitching sense of having been there. We remember best but least in shallow mirrors like those of Norman Parkinson and Baron Adolph de Meyer. Looking at Parkinson's photographs of the '70s, for instance, one may feel, for a fleeting minute, that they contain the real spirit of the decade. But when I fondly returned to the fashion magazines of the time to view these images in their original setting, I found it was never Parkinson's work that stirred: a gloss of memory could make his images seem sexy, but Helmut Newton's indexical eroticism overwhelmed every page. An exoticism and lambent lust in Deborah Turbeville's photographs were more or less imitated by Parkinson, just as he had earlier followed Martin Munkacsi, Richard Avedon, and Willy Maywaldyet he never equaled any of these masters. Again and again, Parkinson's is not the great image, but the one we settle for.
