James Clerk Maxwell June 13 November 5 ) was a Scottish physicist , born in Edinburgh . Maxwell developed a set of equations expressing the basic laws of electricity and magnetism as well as the Maxwell distribution in the kinetic theory of gases. He was the last representative of a younger branch of the well-known Scottish family of Clerk of Penicuik Maxwell is generally regarded as the nineteenth century scientist who had the greatest influence on twentieth century physics, making contributions to the fundamental models of nature. In , on the centennial anniversary of Maxwell's birth, Einstein described Maxwell's work as the " most profound and the most fruitful that physics has experienced since the time of Newton. Algebraic mathematics with elements of geometry are a feature of much of Maxwell's work. Maxwell demonstrated that electric and magnetic forces are two complementary aspects of electromagnetism . Maxwell, James Clerk
British physicist who made fundamental contributions to electromagnetic theory and the kinetic theory of gases. Maxwell, James Clerk Maxwell, James Clerk (1831-1879), British physicist, born in Edinburgh, Scotland, who explained the properties of electromagnetism. Maxwell was the first professor of experimental physics at the University of Cambridge. Expanding on the research of British scientist Michael Faraday, Maxwell demonstrated the mathematical relation between electric and magnetic fields. He also showed that light is made up of electromagnetic waves . The unit of measuring magnetic flux , the maxwell, was named in his honor. Maxwell also developed the kinetic theory of gases, which explains the physical properties and nature of a gas, and he investigated color vision and thermodynamics.
James Clerk Maxwell showed that light - the ultimate symbolic manifestation of divinity - was itself only a certain range of frequencies that happened to stimulate the two photosensitive orbs lodged in the human skull. Certain advanced solutions of his equations also suggested the existence of a parallel cosmos, a mirrored universe where electromagnetic waves move backward in

James Clerk Maxwell was a Scottish physicist who lived between 1831-1879. He studied Saturn's rings and suggested that they were composed of solid particles. This theory was confirmed 100 years later by the Voyager 1 space probe. Maxwell is most famous for his equations linking electricity and magnetism . His revolutionary work lead to the development of quantum physics in the early 1900's and to Einstein's theory of relativity.

1. The Telescope
The JCMT is situated at the summit of Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano on the island of Hawaii, at an altitude of 4092m above sea level. This is one of the best astronomical observing sites in the world, partly because the atmosphere above Hawaii is particularly stable and unpolluted. The JCMT is just one of a dozen or so observatories on the mountain. At submillimetre wavelengths, the transmittance of the terrestrial atmosphere is determined primarily by the amount of water vapour in the line of sight. A high-altitude observing site is therefore an absolute requirement. Unfortunately, even though the summit is normally well above most of the weather, the water vapour content of the atmosphere above the telescope can be quite variable.

Maxwell's notable work in Electricity and Magnetism was summarized in his A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism (1873). He developed the theory of the Electromagnetic Field(s) on a mathematical basis and concluded that electric and magnetic Energy travel in transverse Wave s that propagate at a speed equal to that of Light ; light is thus only one type of Electromagnetic Radiation. An Exhibit by the IEEE History Center (1981)
Written by Robert D. Friedel
It was 150 years ago that the English scientist Michael Faraday discovered that he could generate electricity with magnets - the phenomenon we call electromagnetic induction. In the same year that Faraday made this discovery, there was born in Scotland the man whose brilliant mathematical interpretation of Faraday's ideas was to become the foundation of our modern concepts of electricity, magnetism and light, James Clerk Maxwell. This exhibit celebrates the life and work of these two men and seeks to highlight their contributions to our understanding of electricity and our ability to make electricity work for us through engineering. This exhibit is sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and has been produced by the IEEE's History Center. It is hoped that exhibits such as this one will foster among both electrical engineers and the general public an appreciation for the diversity an richness of the heritage of electrical engineering.

Michael Faraday was born on the 22nd of September, 1791 in the small town of Newington, Surrey, near London. He was the son of a poor blacksmith who was able to provide his family with only the most rudimentary schooling, supplied by the local common day-school. Faraday's most important legacy from his parents was his deep religious faith. Born and raised a member of the small dissenting sect known as the "Sandemanians," Faraday never lost, in a long life devoted to science, his strong attachment to his church.

James Clerk Maxwell
James Clerk Maxwell was one of the greatest scientists of the nineteenth century. He is best known for the formulation of the theory of electromagnetism and in making the connection between light and electromagnetic waves. He also made significant contributions in the areas of physics, mathematics, astronomy and engineering. He considered by many as the father of modern physics. Maxwell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1831. Even though most of his formal higher education took place in London, he was always drawn back to his family home in the hills of Scotland. As a young child, Maxwell was fascinated with geometry and mechanical models. When he was only 14 years old, he published his first scientific paper on the mathematics of oval curves and ellipses that he traced with pins and thread. Maxwell continued to publish papers on a variety of subjects. These included the mathematics of human perception of colors, the kinetic theory of gases, the dynamics of a spinning top, theories of soap bubbles, and many others. Maxwell's early education took place at Edinburgh Academy and the University of Edinburgh. In 1850 he went on to study at the University of Cambridge and, upon graduation from Cambridge, Maxwell became a professor of natural philosophy at Marischal College in Aberdeen until 1860. He then moved to London to become a professor of natural philosophy and astronomy at King's College. In 1865, Maxwell's father died and he returned to the family home in Scotland to devote his time to research. In 1871 he accepted a position as the first professor of experimental physics at Cambridge where he set up the world famous Cavendish Laboratory in 1874.
