The 12-player squad was selected from a pool of 18 athletes from across the country, including nine returning players from last year's team. They have been training since July 20 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, N.Y. The tournament is broken up into two pools. Pool A is made up of host India, Serbia and Montenegro, Russia, Cuba, Korea and Morocco. Pool B is composed of the Netherlands, Brazil, Germany, USA, Iran and Tunisia. The Americans hope to improve upon their silver medal finish at the NORCECA Zone Championships last year. As a result of finishing second, the team was offered, for the first time ever, a World Championship bid through the NORCECA zonal qualification process.

Dr. George Payne Prepared by Dr. Gerald Nelson, Editor The Early Years George Payne was born in Jerome, Ariz., a booming mining town, on April 16, 1930. When George was four, the Payne family moved to East Los Angeles, Calif., where his father was principal in a Hispanic school. George Payne's father was at times a teacher, principal, and supervisor. All of which Dr. Payne has been for me. Well, maybe not a principal, but he was one of my favorite professors at UCSF in the late '60s. George taught us bio-mechanics, soldering, wire bending, band fabrication, welding, retainer fabrication, model trimming-all the basics of our work. He also supervised patient treatment in the clinic. The Payne family moved to East Los Angeles during the Depression, and the family felt fortunate that Mr. Payne had a good job. He was a WWI veteran, and took out a vet loan to build their first home for $5,000. George was raised in a diverse community of Caucasian, Hispanic, and Japanese-American families. When he was in the eighth grade, the Japanese-American students, one of whom was class president, were sent with their families to a concentration camp. George remembers with outrage that his father was booed at a public meeting when he criticized the government's actions. The high school that George attended had no advanced placement classes, so a family friend taught him chemistry after school hours, and this proved to be valuable for him in college

On Mead's life and thought, see Hans Joas, G. H. Mead: A Contemporary Re-examination of His Thought (Cambridge: Polity Press, 1985), and Gary A. Cook, George Herbert Mead : The Making of a Social Pragmatist (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 1993). While now somewhat dated, the largest bibliography of works about Mead is Richard F. Lowy, "George Herbert Mead: A Bibliography of the Secondary Literaure with Relevant Symbolic Interactionist References," Studies in Symbolic Interactionism, vol. 7 part B (1986): 459-521. A Chronological Bibliography Sources: Hans Joas, G. H. Mead ; Gary Cook, George Herbert Mead ; John Shook, Pragmatism: An Annotated Bibliography, 1898-1940 (Amsterdam: Editions Rodopi, 1998); Lloyd Gordon Ward of the Mead Project at Brock University; and information from Harold L. Orbach. "The Relation of Art to Morality." Oberlin Review 9 (1881): 63-64. "Charles Lamb." Oberlin Review 10 (1882-3): 15-16. "De Quincy." Oberlin Review 10 (1882-3): 50-52. "John Locke." Oberlin Review 10 (1882-3): 217-219.
