THERE is a line in the archetypal rock'n'roll novel that states "Reality is cold and wet ..." and for the literary doyenne of the fatalistic times in which live once termed as the "Doom Generation" it is not so much a statement but more a reality.
Darryl Mason began writing short stories at eleven-years-old after discovering Stephen King and Hunter S. Thompson and went on to immerse himself in the often grimy, squalid but always ferocious and passionate world of hard rock and metal journalism. Never one to be content to stand and watch from the sidelines, he would more likely to be found in the mosh pits, hammering out his aggression with the rest of his angry generation.
, his debut novel, is a testament to the primal urges and screams he shared in those human pits as it is a statement of everything that is wrong with the world we live in today.
, simply, is the tragic and humorous tale of two flatmates living in the decaying inner-city of Sydney's Parramatta who share a common dislike of the world and latterly of each other. For Murray, working as a journalist for a local newspaper, surviving each day with a mixture of pot and a gambling addiction is akin to purgatory: "It's bizarre the way we pack ourselves so tightly into towers of apartments, whole cities full of them. It seems so unnatural, such an uninstinctual thing to do. People get crazy when they don't have their own space. Even though you can't see those neighbours on the other side of the wall, you know they're there, just a few feet away, doing whatever; but they're there, and they're close to you."

Max Mason never used his first name of "Charles" and was always known by his middle name of "Max". His mother was Josephine Vroman, and his father was Edwin Cole Mason who was an accountant and businessman. Max studied at the University of Wisconsin which he entered intending to read for a degree in engineering. He engaged in many sports and hobbies at university where he was a champion high-jumper, enjoyed sailing, canoeing, and skating, played bridge and billiards, and learned to play the violin. On the academic side, which he did take seriously despite his many outside interests, he took some mathematics courses from Charles Sumner Slichter who turned Mason on to mathematics. He changed from engineering to study mathematics courses and received a B.Litt. in 1898. For a year he taught mathematics at a high school in Beloit, Wisconsin. It was a year in which he was able to put his many talents other than mathematics to good use for he [3]:-

MASON "MAX" WARREN Max "Retires" as LIUNA Vice President
LIUNA was looking to its 17th birthday when Max Warren came into this world in a tiny little hamlet of Arkansas. The year was 1920 and the United States was getting ready to roar. Max started working at a young age, and by the time he turned 17, he found himself in Phoenix, AZ, where he joined LIUNA Local Union 383, His early career kept him busy working on the great Western water reclamation efforts, the dams, canals and aqueducts. Max’s work with the thousands of other LIUNA members enabled the massive construction and development of Southern California. Within three years, has skill as a leader became evident and he was appointed as a field representative for the Local. The times were unsteady and for the next few years a twenty-something Max Warren kept moving from rank and file construction work in Southern California to union field representative work in AZ. The war years loomed ahead as Max followed work throughout the West. He kept busy helping build small arms plants in Colorado and Utah, an artillery base at Torrey Pines, CA and an internment camp in Arizona.

17-Max Mason
ENGLAND We did not know if Max knew what a dream was. We assumed he had dreams because everyone seems to have dreams, even if they cannot always remember them. We were curious about Maxi's dreams, as I guess all parents are about their child's inner life. We would ask Max about his dreams though we were never sure that it was his dreams he was telling us about. Sometimes, when we asked him about what he had done at the child-minders, he would enthusiastically say, "Seaside!" The child-minder certainly had not taken Max there, but he very much wanted to go. It was the same with his dreams. When he said "Puddles", we did not know whether he had dreamt about jumping in them, or whether that was what he wanted to do next. Max is two and half years old and sleeps for a couple of hours every afternoon. Sometimes he is slow to wake. If we have to leave earlier than usual, I have to wake him up. I do this very gently because he gets quite grumpy if he is woken quickly. Recently, I had to wake him up. I got down on the floor next to the cot, where I could see his sleeping face, and started quietly talking to him, till I saw him stirring and waking up. I stopped talking as he opened his mouth and he said, very clearly: "Zebra". He opened his eyes and then there was a long pause. Finally, he said with real disappointment in his voice: "Oh . . . . . where's it gone?" HOME EMAIL BACK to Mandalas

President 1925-1928 When Ernest Burton died in 1925, the trustees recognized that he was the last member of the original generation of faculty members who could serve as chief executive. Looking for a new president outside the University for the first time, the trustees sought someone young and energetic, having solid credentials and commitment to research, but with strong sympathies for students and able to make effective public appearances. After considering a number of well-known university and college presidents, the trustees found their man a short distance north in Madison, Wisconsin. Charles Max Mason, a mathematical physicist at the University of Wisconsin, had little experience in university administration, but received high praise from his faculty colleagues. He had managed a huge research team during World War I to develop submarine detectors. And, he was a vigorous competitor on the golf course, to the surprise and delight of some of the University's benefactors.

    Max Mason - Doinit
Seasoned songwriter Max Mason many not be a name instantly recognisable to all, however his talents run wide and deep. From writing material during the mid 80's and DJ'ing/producing from the late 90's, Max has gradually amassed a following of loyal fans for both his productions and his renown DJ sets, his skills having been on show at the likes of ClubLove, Kafe Da, Ministry of Sound and Yousef's crowd pulling night - 'Circus' at Masque. Without a doubt, Max is now making up for all those years of hard toil in the studio with this, his latest creation. “Doinit” was picked up by US label Deep Secret, and has now been licensed for release on Desyn Masiello's constantly evolving Alternative Route. The buzz around the track has reached far and wide, gaining some solid support from key DJs within the industry. This is proven by the fact that Lee Burridge (TYRANT) has requested 'Doinit' for inclusion on his forthcoming Global Underground compilation. What a great seal of approval for a track. As well as 'Doinit' and his other projects, Max has also been in the studio collaborating with artists such as Tony Thomas and Fitzy Fyne (Bhangra Knights Vs Hussan). A busy man indeed. 'Doinit' instantly oscillates its way into your senses, hitting you with a good few minutes-worth of deep, morphing acidic tones. The crescendo of this opening sound almost ends up as a tearing white noise, progressively building to a peak, just begging a groove to kick in - which it does at exactly the right point. An upbeat snare slides into the tune partnered by minimal percussion, dramatically swooshing FX and snippets of a female vocal.Gently, a bouncy and funk fuelled bassline pulses its way into the track, bringing along with it a whole plethora of other sounds - echoed FX, percussion and looped vocals, all constantly pushed on by the track's bassline and marching snare. 'Doinit' glams it up to the max (no pun intended!) but with good, healthy doses of tech house, spacial noises and minimal tribal changes sprinkled on top to keep the overall mix interesting and constantly evolving.
