Dragoon Guards Baden-Powell's first cousin, Nevill Maskelyne Smyth, was the son of Sir Warington Wilkinson Smyth (brother of Henrietta Grace Smyth) and grandson of Admiral W. H. Smyth. While serving with the 2nd Dragoon Guards (Queen's Bays) at Khartoum in 1898, he was awarded the Victoria Cross. At the Museum of the Queen's Dragoon Guards, the incident is described as follows:
CAPTAIN NEVILL SMYTH, QUEENS BAYS
At the battle of Khartoum on 2nd September, 1898 a native armed with a spear ran amok among the camp followers. Captain Smyth galloped forward and received the natives charge, and was wounded in the arm by his spear, but he killed the native. By a complete disregard for his own safety he saved the camp followers and prevented further trouble. Prior to the Egyptian Campaign, the Battle of Khartoum and First World War, Nevill Smyth participated in the Zhob Valley Expedition of 1890-1891. The Zhob Valley and the British expeditions are described briefly in the 11th Edition of the

John Nevil Maskelyne : 1839 - 1917 Maskelyne, Cooke and Devant John Nevil Maskelyne (1839-1917) was one of the greatest British magicians, particularly in the field of stage illusions created through sleight of hand. He trained as a watchmaker, which presumably gave him a thorough grounding in the art of precision, and first came to public attention in 1865 when he and his partner George A.Cooke exposed "American spiritualist mediums" the Davenport Brothers as frauds. Maskelyne and Cooke established their own theatre in 1873, and became famous for their shows which blended comedy, illusion and conjuring tricks (they billed themselves as 'Royal Illusionists and Anti-Spiritualists', making it clear that they were in the business of illusion rather than pseudo-religious fakery). They subsequently influenced countless magicians, including the young , who would adapt many of Maskelyne and Cooke's techniques in his own stage productions, and then further into the cinema. Cooke died in 1904, after which Maskelyne teamed up with the legendary magician

Jasper Maskelyne is no longer a household name but, when Tom Cruise plays him in his forthcoming film, The War Magician , that might change. In 1930s Britain, Maskelyne was a star magician, and, when the Second World War broke out, his sleight of hand techniques came in useful during the campaign to beat the German army in north Africa. The Channel 4 programme, Magic at War , part of the Secret History series, tells the astonishing story of how one magician helped defeat Rommel. Family business. Born in 1902, Jasper Maskelyne could trace his ancestry back to the 18th-century Astronomer Royal Nevil Maskelyne. More immediately, he was the third in a line of stage magicians. John Nevil Maskelyne, his grandfather, trained as a watchmaker before enjoying a 30-year reign as Victorian England's most celebrated stage magician. He and his partner George Cooke billed themselves as Royal Illusionists and Anti-Spiritualists, and delighted in exposing the 'supernatural' feats of spiritualist mediums. He also put his mechanical aptitude to more practical uses, patenting inventions such as the coin-operated lavatory door. After Cooke's death, he teamed up with a younger illusionist, David Devant, who went on to work with Jasper Maskelyne's father, Nevil Maskelyne. Star billing.

COMETA MÁGICO If you can't view left menu click Here Jasper Maskelyne Jasper Maskelyne, was born in 1902 in England, a music hall conjurer, never fired a shot in battle, but his amazing feats played a key role in the Allied victory in Africa. Among his many triumphs, Maskelyne “hid” the Suez Canal and conjured up illusions of armies and battleships, fooling German forces led by General Erwin Rommel into retreat. The grandson of John Nevil Maskelyne, one of the founding fathers of British magic, Maskelyne was a celebrated stage magician before the war. Convinced he could use his skills to help the army, Maskelyne wooed sceptical officials by creating the illusion of a German warship floating down the Thames using mirrors and a model. He was placed in charge of the Royal Engineers Camouflage Corps and sent to Egypt where he performed some genuine mission impossibles. Asked to prevent the Germans from bombing Alexandria Harbour, the conjurer redirected the bombers by recreating the harbour’s exact lighting pattern three miles away. He “vanished” the Suez Canal by building a series of spinning strobe lights to put pilots off their bearings. Maskelyne’s greatest triumph came in 1942 when he successfully convinced Rommel that the British Eighth Army was in the south of the Egyptian desert and that the Alamein attack would begin there rather than in the north. Although praised privately by Churchill and hunted by Hitler, Maskelyne ended his days in relative obscurity as a farmer in Kenya and died in 1973.

Schiehallion and the weight of the earth
Schiehallion viewed from the north-west, across Loch Rannoch, rises up as a perfectly conical hill. Schiehallion's symmetry earned it a place in scientific history and discovery in the late 18th century - proving gravity, and weighing the earth - and everyone who has ever used a map should thank Schiehallion for being the inspiration for contour lines! Read a summary below. The full story by Professor Ian S Hughes was in JMT Journal 29, Summer 2000.
    The 1774 experiments
The Reverend Neville Maskelyne, Astronomer Royal, came up with a plan to prove that Newton's Law of Gravity holds for matter on the Earth as well as in the heavens. For this he needed a symmetrical mountain - Schiehallion appeared to be perfect. Maskelyne argued that if the earth was totally smooth, then a plumb line would point down towards the centre of the earth because of the force of gravity on the bob. But if there was a pimple on the earth's surface (a mountain) then gravity would pull the plumb line very slightly towards it. Over a period of four months, he and his colleagues camped out on Schiehallion - first on the south side then on the north - collecting data on the apparent altitude of the stars. If gravity did exist, then when Maskelyne was taking measurements on the south side of the hill, the plumb line should be deflected towards the north effectively decreasing the apparent altitude of the stars. The opposite should occur when he was on the north side of the hill. The difference between the two sets of readings would be the gravitational pull of the mountain.
