Section V. As I wrote, speaking of books in the Library Company which had belonged to famous Englishmen: "A provenance is at once a catchet of excellence and a sentimental link in a cultural chain which binds one age to another." The most exciting feature of the old library of Alleghany College lies in the distinguished early pedigrees of so many of the books which later came into the hands of the Winthrops and Bentley. The catchet of excellence was the ownership of individual volumes by successive generations of New Englanders. The sentimental link was one with Harvard, for nowhere outside the Boston area exists a larger accumulation of volumes which had once belonged to 17th and early 18th-century Harvard students, tutors and professors. In 1933 in the Transactions of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, Arthur O. Norton published a monograph, the product of over twenty years' research, on "Harvard Text-Books and Reference Books of the Seventeenth Century." There he listed all the books formerly owned by 17th-century Harvard students which he had been able to find in such major collections as the American Antiquarian Society (82 volumes), Harvard College Library (76 volumes), Boston Public Library (48 volumes) and Massachusetts Historical Society (29 volumes), and a few others, 257 volumes in all. This work formed the basis for most of Samuel Eliot Morison's detailed study of textbooks in his

CONTENTS Some elements of the history of the negative numbers Use of the negative numbers in mathematics Obstacles to the understanding the negative numbers Particular problem of the rule of the signs for the product Conclusion in the form of pedagogical reflection In particular, the use of the same symbol " - " to indicate the opposite and the operator of the subtraction, the justification of the rule of the signs for the multiplication, the fact that the letter "a" for example can indicate a negative number, although there is no sign " - ", the fact that - 5 is lower than 2, (a debt of 5 euros would be smaller than a profit of two euros?)... And we touch here the fact that perhaps the concrete reference, far from being a help can become an obstacle. Thus we propose you another reflection on the negatives, historical before everything which, perhaps, will clarify the difficulties and errors of our pupils, will allow us to understand that the concepts, even seemingly simple, are the result of centuries of gropings, of which they keep the trace, even when everything seems to have become limpid. And we hope that the reflection will feed the reflection...

Mathematics Pronunciation Guide
A Megametamathematical Guide, for the Diacritally Challenged, of the Proper American English Pronunciation of Terms and Names This guide includes most mathematicians and mathematical terms that may been encountered in high school and the first two years of college. Proper names are generally pronounced as in the original language.
Some entries are obscure and may be useful only in a game of mathematical trivia, e. g. d'Alembert's
mother, the name of the line in a fraction, or who shot Galois.
I have not had the time to include most definitions or accomplishments. The curious person may try searching the internet for such information. However I have given a few, they are indicated with Move the curser to the symbol and wait a second.
D ates include B.C. or A.D. only if the choice is not obvious from the context.
The Guide is not complete, I will be adding more pronunciations and entries as time permits. (I did not give up my day job.) (The red dates and purple pronunciations are not links.)

OLBIA (GREEK SETTLEMENT)
OLANDOLBIA time as joint king of Northumbria with Olaf Sitricson. It is possible that he was the " Olaf of Ireland " who was called by the Northumbrians after ^Ethelstan's death, but both the Olafs appear to have accepted the invitation. He was killed in 941 at Tyningham near Dunbar. See W. F. Skene, Celtic Scotland, vol. i. (1876), and J. R. Green, The Conquest oj England, vol. i. (1899). From the raid of Ragnar Lodbrok's sons in 775 Oland is frequently mentioned in Scandinavian history, and especially as a battleground in the wars between Denmark and the northern kingdoms. In the middle ages it formed a separate legislative and administrative unity. The Historia was translated into Italian (Venice, 1565), German (Strassburg, 1567), English (London, 1658) and Dutch (Amsterdam, 1665); abridgments of the work appeared also at .Antwerp (1558 and 1562), Paris (a French abridged version, 1561), Amsterdam (1586), Frankfort (1618) and Leiden (1652). Olaus also wrote a Tabula terrarum septentrionalium . . . (Venice, 1539). See Biographische Skizzen verstorbener Bremischer Aerzte, by Dr G. Barkhausen (Bremen, 1844); Allgemeine geographische Ephemeri-den, iv. 283 (1799); Abstracts Phil. Trans. iv. 268 (1843): Astronomische Nachrichten, xxii. 265 (Bessel), also appended to A. Schilling's exhaustive work, Wilhelm Olbers, sein Leben und seine Werke, appeared at Berlin in 1894 and 1900, a third and later volume including his personal correspondence and biography. A list of Olbers's contributions to scientific periodicals is given at p. xxxv of the 3rd ed. of his Leichteste Methode, and his unique collection of works relating to comets now forms part of the Pulkowa library.

St. Michael. This saint is in our almanacs and in the calendar of the church of England. The day is a great festival in the Romish church. The rev. Edward Barnard, of Brantinghamthorpe, in " The Protestant Beadsman, under the immediate spiritual protection and personal government of God, who calls them his peculiar people. How then can Michael preside over them? This festival will not lose any dignity by the adoption of such an interpretation, but will demand a more conscientious observance from those, who celebrate in it, not only the host of friendly angels, but, likewise (under the title of Michael) Jesus Christ the common Lord both of angels and men." A well-informed expositor of the "Common Prayer-book," Wheatley, says that the feast of St. Michael and all angels is observed, that the people may know what benefits are derived from the ministry of angels.
